Time travel- Consequences

She had the Plague. How were they supposed to fix it? It's not as if they meant for this to happen. The Plague had struck the earth. Millions were already dead, and the number was growing rapidly. Georgie busied herself around the lab, throwing plants and mixtures into a beaker. Her chocolate-brown hair flowed over her thick black glasses. Her sparkling blue eyes transformed into a confused gaze, attempting to decipher the next step of the handwritten formula. She glanced over at Rebecca, sitting in a small wooden chair, sweat glistening off her brow from the heat and fever. She was scratching her head. All symptoms of the Plague. Although she was blonde, she shared Georgie's glittering eyes. These orphans were unmistakably related. The cure was almost finished, she only needed a few more ingredients. She was so close, she couldn't give up now.

This all started a few days ago. Georgie, dressed in a pure white lab coat and blue rubber gloves, stalked into the dull grey lab. Right behind her was Rebecca, sporting a beige tank top and skinny jeans. In the centre of the room sat Georgie's creation. A large round orb, no bigger than Rebecca's head, perched atop a stool, ready to be used. It was Rebecca's idea to build a time machine, but it was Georgie's genius that put it together. They wanted to find their parents, and help other orphans do so as well. The machine whirred as Georgie fired it up. The date read 4th July 1999; their birthday. The gears screeched and they clasped the handles firmly. A blinding light surrounded them and they were sent to a strange place. It wasn't 1999. It was dark and gloomy. The machine read the Middle Ages. That was most definitely not good.

They received strange looks as they walked along the streets. The people walking had swollen necks and large pus-filled sores all over their body. Hacking coughs and sloshing buckets was all they could hear for miles. The black-grey sky only darkened the mood further. Cobblestone streets, crowded with people, were loud and covered in filth and muck. Just the scent it would make anyone gag. They were in a time when the black plague still roamed and held the citizens hostage. Panic washed over Georgie and fear ate at her brain. "Rebecca, we need to leave. Now. It's not safe here." The sky leaked rain, and the clouds turned an angry shade of black. A forest loomed in the path ahead, the perfect way to get back to the present. They ran into the small clearing and Georgie grabbed the Hadrone Collider remote device from where she stored it in her pocket. This version wasmuch smaller then the one in her workshop. The blinding light surrounded the girls once more, and sent them back to the present.

Their return was met by an eerie silence. They saw no one. It was as if everyone had disappeared. All they could hear was the hacking coughs of the sick and the torrential rain. This is not happening. They knew it had to be Plague. They had brought it back and it was roaming the streets once again. Georgie bolted into her office to check her stores. She had studied ancient diseases and cures in university/college. All the cupboards were practically empty. All except for some vials and flasks. Some were usable, other items she'd need to go out and forage for. Georgie gathered what she could use, furrowed her brows and began to work.

Out in the greenhouse, Georgie was looking for the last ingredients needed to complete the cure. She found what she needed and rushed back inside to Rebecca. She was on the floor coughing and vomiting a dark red liquid; blood. Georgie dumped the freshly collected herbs, their aroma filling the room. She began sobbing for.her sister. The only family she had left. She had to finish the cure, before it was too late. Rebecca's immune system never developed, so she always got sick quicker than anyone else. Georgie got back to work, cutting up ingredients and placing them in the beaker. She got to the final component and realised she forgot to get it at the greenhouse. She couldn't think of leaving Rebecca alone in her own vomit and blood. It was the only way. She ran out to the greenhouse once again and got the final ingredient. When she returned, Rebecca's breathing was shallow and slow. Georgie didn't have much time. Into the beaker went the final ingredient and she went off to check on Rebecca. It didn't look like she was breathing! No pulse; no breathing; no vitals. Rebecca was gone. Georgie was too late. Her beloved little sister was gone. She was sobbing, crying like a baby in a corner. No matter what, Georgie would not let anyone else die. She would continue her work. Help people who got the Plague and cure them. The answer was right in front of her. She would start with her town, and then go around the world. All for Rebecca. This was her consequence. Now she must fix it.
