Letting Go
Today was the day she would find out if everything she thought she knew about what was happening between them was actually a lie. She sat quietly at the table, waiting for him to appear, if he ever would. For a while now, she would have to go to him, and he almost never came to her.
After a few minutes, she sighed softly, and pulled out her phone, going to social media while she waited. Occasionally, she would look around to see if he was coming, but more times than not there was no sign of him. Growing frustrated, she told herself he had two minutes to show before she would go back to her apartment, and just leave him there waiting like he's done so often to her.
She sighed again, and turned off her phone, staring sadly down at the table. She didn't want to confront him, she wanted to leave everything as it was, but she had to know the truth. She heard footsteps approaching, and looked up, seeing the familiar dark-skinned man she had been seeing. His skin color was stark contrast to her own pale white skin. She gave him a tight-lipped smile, and gestured for him to sit down.
"How are you?" she asked softly, ignoring his cautiously confused look. She knew it was because she didn't get up to give him a hug like she normally would, but she didn't want any physical touch to change her mind on what she needed to talk to him about. She didn't need endorphins to make her forget everything that had been bothering her.
"Good", he said shortly, watching her closely. She knew he was observing her, trying to figure out what she was feeling. "How are you?"
The woman closed her eyes and sighed quietly. "I've been better."
"What's up?" he asked, concern lacing his voice. She winced, letting her hair fall in front of her face to try and hide the pain she was feeling.
"How do you really feel about me?" she asked. "I know you say you like me, but... why? Why do you like me?"
The man was silent for a moment. "I do really like you. I like that you listen." The woman waited for a bit to see if he would say anything else, but he didn't and she closed her eyes tightly, fighting back tears.
"But that's it?"
The man was silent, and she knew that it was true. A tear slipped from her eyes and she wiped it away.
"Then why are you still going out with me?" she asked. "If you only like me because I listen, but you don't like anything else about me, then why are you still here with me?"
"Because I believe that you can change to be what I want you to be."
The woman grit her teeth. "That's going to be a problem. Because you wanna know something? I'm not going to change because you want me to! Who I am right here? That's who I am. I'm a writer. I want to be a teacher. I get excited when I see lightning or hear thunder! I like rambling about the little beauties in life, like the stars or the clouds! This is who I am! And if you don't like that about me, then I don't think we're meant to be seeing each other!"
The man was quiet, and the woman realized that she was standing, leaning over the table to yell at him. She collapsed back into her seat, and let the tears drip down her cheeks.
"I really like you", she whispered. "But I don't think we're compatible with each other."
The man remained quiet, and the woman looked over at him. His face was blank, but as she looked into his eyes, she saw the same pain she was feeling reflected there. She gave him a broken smile, before whispering one final thing.
"I'm really sorry." With that she stood, and started to walk away, meaning to head back to her apartment. She was stopped by someone grabbing her hand, and pulling her back. She looked back at the person holding her, and was greeted by the face she had grown to love. Before she could say anything to him, his lips were pressed against hers, something she had wished would happen for a long time. She melted into the kiss, tears streaming down her face. She pulled away after a few seconds, and stood a couple feet away from him.
"Goodbye, mi amor", she whispered. "I hope you find someone who is better for you than I was."
With that, she turned and hurried away, not wanting to see him staring after her. But she couldn't help to look back, and she saw him watching her. Her heart yearned for her to turn back, to fix what they had broken, but she fought against that feeling. Whatever had happened between them was in the past, and it was time to let go.
