Best Friends
"Hey, sweetie", Evie White says to her daughter who had just arrived at the house. Skye just looked at her blankly, with no emotion on her face, anywhere. Evie sighs before welcoming her into the house, and showing Skye her new room.
Evie tried to talk to her. "So, Elissa-"
"Skye", Skye says.
"Skye?"
"I go by Skye."
"Okay." Evie blinked in surprise. She hadn't expected that from her daughter. After a few moments, she spoke up again.
"Anyway, Skye, this room will be your bedroom", Evie says as she reaches for a door handle and opens the door to a plain white room. Skye looks around, her face drawn tightly as she looks at the plainness.
"Do you have any paint?" The question was quiet, but curt. It took Evie by surprise.
"Uh... Y-yeah. In the garage."
Skye places down her bags in the room, before whisking past Evie to the garage. Evie looked at the two small bags that her daughter had brought, and was confused by how little Skye had brought.
Soon, Skye returned with a couple buckets of paint, and set them down next to her bags, before pulling a couple of paint brushes from out of her back pocket.
"Skye, if you don't mind me asking... Why did you bring so little?"
"The rest is coming later", Skye answers, her voice still curt.
Now you have to understand, Skye wasn't trying to be curt. She was just shocked and nervous. It had only been a few days since her birthday, and the day her family died. All she had left was her mother, Evie, who she had not seen since she was six. She had no clue how to act around her, and that led to Skye's curtness, and aloofness.
Evie nods slowly before sighing. "Well, I'll leave you to it."
Skye glances at her mother, her eyes softening a little bit.
"Hey, Mom? Thanks for... letting me stay here." Skye was uncertain of how her mother would take it but to her surprise, Evie's face lit up with delight.
"Well, it's what a mother is supposed to do!"
Skye gives her slight smile, more of just the corner of her lip lifting up slightly, but it soon disappeared. Evie took that as her cue to leave.
Skye sighs as she looks out the window, where she sees several young kids playing outside. How she wished she could go back to that age, when nothing was wrong, and she didn't have to deal with being thrust into a new house, with nothing familiar, not even her own mother. She wished she had her father here, or her sister, or even her annoying older brother who always chased away the boys that pined after her. Tears came to eyes as she remembered what happened that day.
"Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Skye, Happy Birthday to you!" Skye smiled as her dad and siblings sang Happy Birthday to her.
"Happy Birthday, Skye! You're officially seventeen!" Michael, her brother, exclaims.
"Thanks, Michael" Skye says as she gives each of her family members a hug.
"Hey, let's go out to eat!" Skye's dad, Josh, says as he puts his arm around Skye.
Skye grins and runs out to the car, claiming shotgun. Her brother let out an angered exclamation and he tried to pull her out of the seat, but failing. He growled as he climbed into the backseat, but smiles when he sees his sister laughing.
"Come on!" Skye calls out to her dad, who was just barely walking out of the house.
"Slow poke!" Michael exclaims.
"Guys, be nice to Dad", Gabrielle, Skye's sister, says calmly.
"We are being nice, Gabby. We're just having fun messing with him", Skye grins. Gabrielle rolls her eyes, but smiles anyway.
"I'll let it go since it's your birthday", Gabrielle says.
"I still find it strange that you're the youngest of us three, and the most mature", Michael says.
Skye laughs loudly, as her Dad finally gets in the car. They start driving to Skye's favorite restaurant, but they didn't get too far, before the car was sent spinning. Skye screamed, and soon was jolted forward, when they came to stop by the car running into a streetlamp. She looked around, dazed, but still worried for her family.
She looked over to her dad, who had the airbag blown up in front of him. He also had blood running down the side of his face. Skye could faintly hear herself calling out to him, but she soon had black spots dotting her vision.
Soon, there was nothing to see, and Skye lost consciousness.
Skye shook her head, and cleared away the tears, before opening the buckets of paint and dipping the paint brush in before starting to paint the walls. It took her a while but soon, one wall had a beautiful sunset, the opposite with a moon rise. The colors on the last two walls were what the sky would be if it was actually a sunset-moonrise. It was very beautiful and Skye was proud of her work.
She heard a car door slam outside and when she looked out it, it was the small u-haul she had rented that one of her old friends was willing to drive for her. She smiles softly as she goes out to greet her friend.
As she exited the house, she saw a boy not much older than her, in the house next door. She looked at him and he grinned at her and waved. She blinked before looking away.
'He's so happy... If only he knew what life brings', Skye thinks to herself.
She smiled softly as she came up to her best friend.
"Hey, Skye", her friend says. "How you doing?"
"I just finished painting my room, so I'm doing pretty good, I suppose. Although... my emotions are still a mess right now", Skye says.
Her friend smiles. "Well, let's get you unpacked."
Skye smiles softly and they go and open the u-haul. They pull out several boxes and bags, and quickly drop them off in the front room of the house, meaning to move them to Skye's room later.
Soon, they got to the bigger stuff, such as her dresser, and her bed. Skye sighs before deciding to move her mattress first, because that would be the easiest.
Before they could even get started moving it, the same boy from earlier popped his head into the trailer.
"Hey! Need some help?" he exclaims.
Skye jumps and yelps with surprise.
"Who are you?" Skye was immediately cautious.
"My name is Zayden! Zayden Xavier Lawson! I'm your next door neighbor", he says. Skye mentally groans at his enthusiasm, but knowing that neither she or her friend could move some of this stuff, agreed to let him help.
"You can help, but you have to be very careful", Skye says.
"Sweet! Hey... Uh... I never got your name..."
"Just call me Skye", Skye says.
"Woah. That's a cool name. Reminds me of a friend I had when I was about six. She lived in the same house you do now. Her name was Elissa though. Actually I think her middle name was Skye. What a coincidence!"
Skye freezes, trying to go through her memory for someone named Zayden. However she could not remember anyone with that name. She shrugged it off.
"Yeah. Coincidence", Skye mutters.
Just then her friend decided to speak up. "What was her last name?"
"Oh, I think it was whiting, white? Something like that."
"Skye..." her friend murmurs.
"What? He had a friend when he was six that has the exact name as me? Yeah, anything's possible but I have no memory of this kid whatsoever. I may have lived here until I was six, but it's not like I was his childhood friend."
Zayden was staring at Skye with shock in his eyes. "Well, it's no wonder you looked familiar! You were my best friend when we were six!"
"Yeah. sure. Highly doubt it", Skye says coldly, but a shadow of doubt still lingered in the back of her mind. "Now are you going to help me move this or not?"
Zayden blinks before rushing over and picking up something, though no one was really sure what. He quickly rushed it into the house before hurrying back and helping us move even more stuff. In a few minutes, everything was now in the front room, and we were standing there looking at it.
"Let's move my bed to my room first", Skye says decisively and goes to move the bed frame. Zayden immediately goes to help. Skye mutters herself, trying to remember this Zayden kid, but no matter what, nothing jogged her memory.
She growled softly before focusing at the task at hand. After about an hour, everything was in place. Well, everything except for what was in the boxes and bags. Her friend left to go take the u-haul back, but Zayden stayed until Skye grew annoyed with his constant chatter and kicked him out of the house.
After he left, Skye went to go find her mother, who was in the kitchen. She immediately questioned her mother about Zayden.
"Mom, was I ever friends with a kid named Zayden when I was a kid?"
Evie's eyes lit up with delight. "You were! Did you run into him today?"
Skye groaned. "Yeah. And I don't know how I managed to handle him as a little kid. He's way too... happy for me."
"Well, maybe he'll be good for you", Evie murmurs.
Skye rolled her eyes. "Sure, Mom. Sure."
Skye went back to her room, which was still filled with boxes and bags. Sighing, Skye began to go back through her boxes and put stuff away. Soon, there were was a pile of empty boxes near her door, and stuff strewn all over the room. It was just a bunch of little trinkets she had gathered over the years. She didn't know where to put them. She looked around her room, only to see her dresser that was now filled with clothes. However, the top had nothing on it. Skye smiled before putting her trinkets on top, one by one, having fun reminiscing were she got them. When she got to the last one, she paused. It was a small dragon sculpture, one she had had since she was little. She tried to remember where she got it from, but there was no memory associated with it. She hummed softly before holding it and going to the window. She looked outside to see Zayden playing with a young boy that looked very similar to Zayden. She guessed it was his brother. She smiled as she watched them play, memories floating past of her and her brother playing like that. She also remembered playing with a young boy before her parents got divorced.
It was then that she realized.
The young boy in that memory was Zayden. She looked back at the dragon trinket. She looked back at Zayden.
A memory appears in her mind, and she blinks as it consumes her mind.
"Zay!! Give it back!" young Skye yells as the taller boy holds the doll high above Skye's head. He laughs.
"Only for you, Skye", young Zayden says.
"Skye?" young Skye asks, confused. "My name's Elissa."
"But your middle name is Skye and I like Skye better", Zayden says.
It was then that Skye realized that this was why she had started going by Skye instead of Elissa.
"Ooooh! I like it then! I'm going to go by Skye from now on!" young Skye laughs as Zayden hands her the doll they had previously been playing with.
"Yay!" young Zayden jumps up, causing Skye to burst into a fit of giggles.
"Zay, you're so weird", Skye teases. She was happy though, to have this young weirdo of kid as her best friend.
"Says you!" he exclaims as he runs over to his house, Skye following him. "Oh, Skye! I got you something. I thought you would like it!"
"What is it?" Skye asks curiously.
"Stay here! I'll go get it!" Zayden runs into the house while Skye waits outside. A few moments later, Zayden appears with the small dragon trinket in his hands.
"Here!" Zayden shoves it into Skye's hands. Skye looks at it and her eyes widen. She grins and throws her arms around Zayden.
"Thanks, Zay! I love it!"
Zayden laughs and hugs her. "I'm glad, Skye. I hoped you would."
Skye blinks as she stares at Zayden, who had just barely noticed her in her window. He smiles as he walks over to the window, which she opens, so she could talk to him.
However, before she could say anything, Zayden noticed the little trinket in her hands.
"You kept that...?" he whispers, shocked.
"Yeah. I never really knew why until I was putting them away just now. I looked at it and realized I had no idea where it came from. But... I know now. I remember you giving it to me when we were six. It was the day before I moved away. I kept it to remember you, and yet... it seems that I still forgot you."
Zayden smiles. "It's okay. I never really expected you to keep it. I had completely forgotten about it until now, in all honesty."
Skye smiles back at him, a full on smile, not one of her half ones, or barely visible ones. That smile made Zayden smile even more.
"There's that smile that I fell in love with when we were six", Zayden says softly. Skye looks back at him, shocked.
"W-what?"
"Heheh... I said that out loud, didn't I?"
"Yeah."
"Well... it's true... I've like you since we were six. I still like you know, though I know you've changed and I've changed and I doubt it will work out, but..."
Skye laughs quietly, and shakes her head. "You're still a weirdo."
Zayden grins. "Well, it is my best quality."
That gained a slightly louder laugh from Skye, making Zayden grin even more.
"Hey, Skye? Want to go see a movie with me?"
Skye smiles softly. "I'd love to. But let me finish unpacking first."
Zayden agrees and they decide on going to go see a movie the next day. Soon, they grew closer again and became best friends again. They both like each other, but decided to keep it non-serious for now while they're in high school. They hope to last past high school, and seeing as they had less than a year, they knew that it would last.
The End
