(Random Digimon Dub semi-rant)

Ohho, this going to be long!

I grew up watching Digimon. And despite mu sudden potterhead phase that I am sure isn't going to go away anytime soon, Digimon is my first ever fandom and it is what introduced me to fanfiction in general.

I loved Digimon like any other middle eastren kid did back then. I remember running to the living room at 7:00 every night to catch the latest episode, and wonder wether Wasim(T.K. or Takeru in the English and Japanese dub respectively, pronounced Waa-sem.) anf. is going to get his ultimate digivolution yet (*HINT* I WAITED FOR 13+ EPISODES, AND CONSIDERING HE WAS THE MOST RELATABLE CHARACTER TO MY 6 YEAR OLD SELF, IT WAS AGONIZING.)

But as I grew up and watched the english and later Japanese versions, some changes, small and big, confused me slightly.

1.The Age

In the Arabic dub of Digimon, Matt was 11, a year older than Tai, and so were Joe and Mimi, Tai and Sora were 10, Izzy was 8, and TK and Kari were 6. It was pointless for me to switch Matt's and Mimi's ages. But, then again, maybe the dubbing company shipped Mimi×Joe (*wink wink*). Keeping Matt 10 like in canon would make the frivalry(I MADE A WORD!!!) between them more realistic and believable.

And then we move to season two, where, for some reason, instead of being a year older, Yolei was the same age as Davis, T.K, and Kari. Cody was kept at 8, and Ken was moved into the 11 age category.

Tamers was another issue too. Takato was made to be only 9, making him the youngest gogglehead by far. Henry and Rika were 10 and 11 respectively, and Takato was a model student according to what Jeri had said once. But that is another issue.

Kenta and Kazu (took me ten minutes to remember their names) were 9 as well, and so was Jeri, Suzie was only 5, and Ryo was freaking 14. I mean, talk about the age gaps people! And don't get me started on Ai and Mako. They were 6 and 3 respectively. Having a digidestind/Tamer 11 years older than you is very akward.

Frontier had no problems regarding ages. They were all canon. HOWEVER, there was a bigger problem I shall touch on with later.

Data Squad was (ERROR. FOOTAGE NOT FOUND.)

And ahhhhh....the cancer that was the Digimon Fusion dub...

Taiki was made 11, as opposed to 13, and Nene was 14. Kiriha was 16.

Alright, one question.

Why the hell would you let an 11 year old lead you?

Yuu was 10, a year younger than Taiki. I have no idea about his original age though..

2.Censorship and dubbing quality.

Censorship was no big deal in the earlier in the 3 first seasons, with the exception of Angemon, Angewomon and MagnaAngemon. And considering I am a muslim in an area 90% muslims, thats understandable. And even then it wasn't heavy. They were just never referred to as angels in anyway, shape or form.

The 2nd half of Tamers were moved to a later timeslot during the day, from 7:00 to 10:00 and weren't aired on weekends. Only school nights, which meant that only kids who can stay up till then, the 11-to 18 year olds, could watch them. The reasons are known to most of us. These last few episodes dealt with depression, death, and dark themes in general. It is a pretty smart way to not show that to the younger soon-to-be tramatized 5-7 year old Digimon fans.

Frontier is where shit hit the fan, though. I mentioned before that Zoe was very heavily censored, because of her outfit and spirit evolution. The islamic law is very strict on a woman's coverage. It got so bad at one point that Zoè was practically written off the scriprt compleatly. The thing is, that problem with a bit of editing, could've been easily fixed!! Why animators?! WHHHYY?!

And aahhh....Digimon Fusion...

But first, before we get to that, let me tell a bit of backstory.

There are 4 channels in the arab world that dub anime and cartoons. Those three are Spacetoon, MBC3, Jeem, and Cartoon Network Arabia.

Spacetoon was opened in 2000, and was an instant hit. It ruled the Television even when MBC3 opened in 2005.

Each channel has their specialties. Spacetoon made it big with their excellent VA's for Digimon, Naruto, One Peice, Bleach, DBZ, Gundam Wing A/C, and many more. Clearly, Action and adventure where their fortè. They also had these cool 'planets' that categorize shows, and they weren't shown in any order. They had Adventure Planet, Action Planet, Sports Planet, Girls Planet, History Planet(which was axed 2 years back), Science Planet, Comedy Planet, Kids Planet, and Movie Planet. It was diffrent and people loved it, because we were exploring diffrent shows in Spacetoon Galaxy in our free time. To put it lightly, thier VA's had vocal chordes strong enough to support Eren Yeager and Kirito's vocal roars.

MBC3, never caught on with action or adventure. But they had VA's that could do comedy. Thus, they were the funniest cartoons on Television. The rights to brodcast and dub Tom and Jerry, Sponge Bob, Totally Spies and various teen sitcoms like Hannah Montana or Zack and Cody or Wizards of Waverly place were here.

Jeem and CN Arabia are invalid for now, so that is for another rant. (*Glares at TTG*)

So, for some reason, Spacetoon switched the rights to Digimon for the rights to Fairly Odd Parents and Power Rangers, the latter which they did suprisingly excellently.

Meanwhile MBC3 butchered the Digimon Fusion so hard I could never look at it the same way again.

Now, they used the AMERICAN DUB.

WORD FOR WORD.

PROBABLY USING GOOGLE TRANSLATE.

And they broke tradition by not changing the characters names and the digimon's names, which gave the series its Arabic Dubbing charm.

In short, it was horrible.

Thats the end for now! Now I have to go and stare at a wall till I go numb with the impending doom of a Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood dub made by Spacetoon.
