Bumblebee: A Review (SPOILERS)

So, on the 20th I got to see Bumblebee, and long story short, we got tickets, but apparently there was a glitch in the computer or something that was saying that the movie wasn't showing that day even though it was, so my dad and I and two other people were the only ones in the theater. It was awesome. 😁

But anyway, my mom suggested I write my own review of it on here, so I tried.

First will be my critical review, then at the end will be my personal review.

(SPOILER WARNING from here on)

The Critical Review

If you were expecting an action-packed beat-'em-up movie...this isn't it. "Bumblebee" is more focused on story and relationships than action. Don't get me wrong though, there definitely was some action.

First of all, I have to say, I was impressed with how clean it was compared to the Bayverse movies and just in general. Of course there were a few swear words, three shirtless scenes, and a couple kisses, but that's about it. Oh yeah, other than people getting blasted into goop. It's only slightly less disgusting than when it happened in Ant-Man. *shudder*

The opening few minutes was definitely the coolest part of the movie, hands down. That was the part on Cybertron where all the cameos are found, including a TON of seekers and a nostalgic-sounding Shockwave voice. Two thumbs up. 👍👍

Bumblebee's Arrival to Earth (sorrynotsorry) could've been done differently, but of course they had to have the military be the first humans he comes in contact with. And then this random Decepticon shows up who apparently is Blitzwing?!?

I felt Bumblebee as a character was done pretty well though. He's like a child seeing and exploring the world for the first time (and in my opinion, it's adorable). He also puts others before himself as is shown multiple times and isn't showy/arrogant just cuz he's an advanced mechanical life form and humans are just...fleshies; in the words of my dad helping me describe what I thought, he has a conscience.

Charlie felt the most real to me. I liked the fact that she was close her dad, and that when she was teased about it (and other things), she was mature about it and kept her cool.

Charlie & Memo's was ehh to me. I do like that they keep it at friends, even up to the end when Charlie says, "No. We're not there yet." Yeah, you could call it friend-zoning, but I prefer the term "getting to know each other better before you make a leap that big". Charlie does kiss Memo once, but only on the cheek after an emotional scene.

Agent Burns was a cool reference that I hope was an intentional reference. He is the typical Transformers-verse person who gets hurt by a Decepticon then thinks that all Cybertronians are evil until the end when he is saved from harm by one and then finally sees the two factions, but I guess he's ok, especially in light of the fact that this almost canonizes Pomander's theory/headcanon thing from Mission Log: Homo Sapiens.

The Decepticons Shatter and Dropkick made me think of characters that could've been in Prime. They just do. They're cool, for Decepticons. They still don't beat Prime Soundwave though. No Con can or ever will. 🙃

Personal Review

It was adorable, it was clean (for the most part), it had feels, and it was Bumblebee! What more must could a fangirl want?

Other than Soundwave and Shockwave's voices sounded so close to their G1 voices! It was awesome. And the CGI during the on-Cybertron scenes! Oh my word. And the prank scene was just hilariously cringey.

Overall rating: 8/10
