Five words.

Five words had ripped apart his life.

It had only taken five simple words to split his heart in half like a melon, to crush his soul like a grape.

It didn't seem possible, but it had happened, happened to him.

He had never been betrayed like this before. It hurt. It hurt more than scalding soup, pouring over him.

He wanted to cry and cry and never stop. He had been betrayed by the one he loved so much. The one he trusted with his life. It hurt.

How had five words ripped apart his life so entirely, like savage hyenas tearing into bread? It had happened one morning, when the sun was shining brightly and it felt like nothing in Erdas could go wrong. She had taken her place at the table beside him, as if nothing was going to happen.

And the way she said it so casually, made him want to scream. She had ripped out his heart like it was a seed in an avocado.

He hadn't said a word to her since.

"Hey." She had come up behind him. He knew it was her, without even turning around. She was the one who had sliced into him, like he was a cake. He ignored her, although it was hard. "Why haven't you been talking to me?"

Wasn't it obvious? He stuck his nose in the air and didn't answer.

"This isn't like you."

Of course he wasn't himself. This was a new change, and a change he hated more than wasted fruit.

"You're being melodramatic."

That did it. He whirled around and advanced on her, though his height didn't help at all.

//Me? Being melodramatic? How could you say such a thing? I loved you! I trusted you! How could you do this to me? I was polite to you! I never did a thing to you! How could I deserve this? I cared about your feelings, and I thought you did to!// he turned away, his voice cracking.

//Obviously I thought wrong. You don't care about how I feel at all. I'm your spirit animal, Ellie!//

"Oh my Tellun, Buttons," Ellie said to her fennec fox, exasperated. "All I said was 'you're going on a diet'!"
