Poem By My Father
Sitting by Water's Edge, I had a feeling
It was but the forming of a question,.
What is life ?
Is it the essentials of day-to-day living
Is it the very essence of Who We Are
Sitting by the water's edge I asked her
Oh dear mistress of the sea
what is life ,what is life
To flow, she bubbles, to flow
Dear mistress if it were that I was a fish I would understand
but alas I am a man
A breeze gently caresses my face and I have a thought oh great Keeper of the Wind
what is life ,what is life to soar he Thunders to soar
Oh great keeper if it were that I was a bird this would put it into my questing but alas I am a man
I begin to wonder for days or so it seemed
Alas I come to shade Beneath a Humble oak tree
Inspired I asked
oh great mother of Earth
what is life what is life
To grow she trembles to grow
Oh great mother if it's where that I was a tree I would understand but alas I am a man
I am cold
I must build a fire
Fire that's it in my excitement
I begin to gather Twigs
I reach above my head to borrow some moss and the oak to which I was shaded Whispers beware, beware
What is thy meaning I say somewhat troubled by it's indifference
Beware it Whispers beware
The fire warms
I look at it and I say oh great Keeper of the light
what is life, what is life
I am comforted
Accompanying me on the way to dreams there's an echo in my conscience that crackles
To burn ,to burn
Enough, I jump upon my feet and
I begin to shout
I condemn you water
I condemn you Sky
I condemn you Earth
I condemn fire
As if in answer
the Earth begins to tremble
I fall down
the wind begins to blow
I close my eyes
I Feel the Fire lean towards me startled i cry out
why ,why
It begins to rain
The fire cools
The earth and wind are stagnated
The oaks branches unfold
To shade the rain
I detect a smile
Be content, it whispers, be content
