The Good Doctor: Shaun Murphy x Reader

I will be using the pronouns they/them, here, so the non-binary people also feel welcome.
This is a scenario I thought first with my oc, and then I gave up and thought (too many oc drafts) and just made it a reader.
Also, to those non-binary people please do correct me if I made a mistake, as well as people who are autistic/know someone autistic please tell me if I captured Shaun well enough.
I haven't watched the Good Doctor in so long, so...wish me luck.

I was locking the door to my apartment. It was 6 a.m. and I had to head to work. It usually took me a while to get to the station and then to put on my suit. To my surprise, I heard someone else locking their door. I looked to my right and saw Shaun Murphy. My new roommate, and a cute one might I add. I smiled. "Good morning Shaun. Off to work?" I asked politely. Shaun jumped around and looked at me. "Y/n. It's been a while. How have you been?" He asked, avoiding eye contact. I smiled, reminding myself that he's autistic. My father taught me the right way to speak to someone is with eye contact, with a few exceptions. I'm sure he wouldn't have minded the fact Shaun couldn't. Otherwise there would be a problem.

"I'm doing good. And you?"
"Good."
"Alright then. Good luck, Shaun. And stay safe." I told him, keeping the conversation as short and meaningful as I could. Shaun smiled. "Bye, Y/n." He spoke. "Bye." And we went our separate ways from there.

Soon enough, I reached the station. My co-worker, Martha, came up to me and greeted me. "Hey, Y/n."
"Hey Martha."

We talked as we reached the room where we put on our gear. Usually, I keep my hair as back as it can be, as to not get caught in the flames in any way.

Suddenly, the fire alarm started. We got a call on where it was and went down the pole. We out on the top of our suits and went to the fire truck.

We found a huge building on fire. Every few seconds an explosion appears. Chief Jackson walked up and asked how many people were still in there. "We evacuated almost everyone-" "MY WIFE! PLEASE SHE'S IN THERE!" A young woman yelled. She cried as she held her kid. "My wife is in there!" "Hold on, Miss. Please take a step back. May we know her name?" Chief asked. "Karen Underwood. Please help her." The young woman cried. "I'm sorry, but based on your explanation she's too deep in the building. We'll try our hardest, but I don't think we'll be able to get her in time." The captain mumbled the last part. I turned back to look at the burning building. I saw a silhouette. I knew that the other fire fighters weren't gonna try and save her. I looked at the truck, the water pump being there. "Martha. I'm going in. Get the hose!" I yelled. I heard her yelling for me. I ran in there as the woman fell and I dodged a falling patch of bricks.

The flames burned my skin through me suit. The woman was too deep in the building and everytime there was some water, the flames would roar back. "Hello!?" I yelled. I caught the woman and she gripped onto me. "Are you Karen Underwood?" I asked. The woman nodded and we climbed out. Just as she got outside, bricks fell between us, leaving me trapped inside.

I looked around. I cried out to Karen. "Go get help!" She nodded and ran. I tried to stay awake and free my leg, but it felt shattered. I couldn't feel anything on it. Carbon dioxide filled my lungs as I desperately tried to breathe in oxygen. But it all disappeared. I felt my eyes slowly close. And soon enough, instead of a roaring fire and falling bricks, darkness covered my vision.

As Y/n laid in the burning building, Martha and two others came in and pulled them out. They noticed that they were unconscious and carried them outside. "Chief! We got them!" Martha yelled over her walkie talkie. "Good job, Martha." Chief replied. Eventually an ambulance came over. Two nurses came and placed Y/n on a gurney. They were still unconscious.

The drive to the hospital was not long. They brought Y/n into the ER. "Patient is a s/c female firefighter. She has several burns on the right side of her body and her right leg is seems really damaged." A nurse spoke. The doctors got in and got ready to perform whatever surgery is needed. They saw Y/n's unconscious body. But when Shaun entered, his face paled when he saw them. "Their name is Y/n L/n." Shaun spoke up. "You know them?" Claire asked, picking up when Shaun emphasised on 'their'. "They are my neighbour." "The one you talk about?" Melendez asked. Shaun nodded and began helping the other doctors. At some point they began checking Y/n's leg.

"This is not good." Melendez spoke. "Her leg is too badly damaged. We'll have to amputate it." The doctor said. Shaun's eyes widened slightly. He began panicking for Y/n. "Claire, get Shaun out of here now." Claire nodded and got Shaun out. "Hey Shaun, it's gonna be ok. Trust me. Right now you need to calm down. For Y/n." Claire told him. Shaun slowly breathed in and out as he held his scalpel.

"You're right. I have to be strong for them." Shaun spoke. Claire smiled. Other doctors came out. "Hurry up, we need help." Shaun nodded as he and Claire went back in.

After around an hour and a half, the surgery was complete. Y/n was currently asleep and Shaun sat in the chair next to them. He smiled as he thought about them smiling and laughing. He really thought that they could make a difference. Soon enough Y/n started to stir. Shaun quickly jumped to his feet and held their hand. Y/n finally opened their e/c eyes. Their messy short/long h/c hair was sprawled all over the pillow. "Shaun..." they smiled tiredly. "Hello Y/n." Shaun spoke, avoiding eye contact again. They smiled in return.

I smiled once more, until I realised something. I couldn't feel my right leg. I slowly lifted the blanket on my right side and finally realised something. My right hand had burns all over, and my right leg...my right leg from my knee down is...

"Shaun..?" I asked, tears gathering in my eyes. "W-What happened?" I asked, as a tear escaped and drilled down my cheek. I felt Shaun squeeze my hand, and I squeezed him back. "Your leg was badly damaged, all bones were beyond repair and we had to amputate it." Shaun explained.

"Lovely to see you're awake, Mx L/n. I'm Doctor Neil Melendez and this is Doctor Claire Browne." A man walked in and introduced. "Hello." I politely greeted. "Thank you for all the work you did." I said. "When can you discharge me?"

"Shaun, let's let them talk." The lady, known as Claire, spoke up, leaving Melendez and I to speak alone.

Three Weeks Later

Shaun was currently helping me get home.

"Shaun, you didn't have to." I told him. "But I do. You're my friend, Y/n. I'll do anything for you." He spoke. I blushed slightly. I mentally kicked myself. Why did I have to crush on him, I will never know why.

Soon enough we reached my apartment. "If you would like, I can stay at your place and help more?" Shaun offered. I smiled. "No, it's fine. My brother is staying over for a while. He is a good enough roommate, believe it or not." I joked. I saw how Shaun smiled in the corner of my eye.

"Alright then." Shaun spoke. I knocked on the door to my apartment and was greeted with my idiot but chef of a brother. "Y/n! I'm glad you're home." He said. "Alright, thanks again, Shaun." Shaun smiled and went to his apartment, which is literally beside mine.

"Wait." I called out, causing him to pause before entering. With my crutches, I hopped over to him to kiss his cheek. "Good night, Shaun." I said and went to kiss him, but he quickly turned around, causing me to kiss him on the lips. We both blushed and quickly pulled away. "G-g-Goodnight, Y/n." He said as he entered his apartment. My brother whistled and walked over to me. "Come on. I need you to try my lasagna."

Later that evening, I received a text. I turned on my phone and saw Shaun texting me. "I wanted to tell you, I actually like you...more than a friend." The message said. I typed in something quickly before putting my phone to charge and going to sleep. "I like you too, Shaun. Do you wanna have lunch tomorrow?"

"I think I'll be free, I just have to check. I think I can."

The text read.

I smiled. "Sweet dreams."
I saw that he hadn't read it yet, meaning he probably already went to bed. I turned off my lights and also went to sleep. I was so excited for tomorrow!
