Your father. Used to be the gze (knight grand cross=general )that lead the zugludvarian military force one of the few people the king trusted greatly so you grew up very close to the princess you looked forward to taking his place one day.
You and the princess were extremely gifted but you could tell there was something more important...special about hers you both became knights at a very young age
And when your father retired his position he and the king decided it was best she take his place you we're disappointed at first but your father made you realize you had a much more important job being by her side keeping her safe keeping her happy keeping her strong
The older you got the more close you became and the stronger your feelings
One day before your father retired a mission to reclaim order and possession over a small but large portion of the empire referred to as the inside it was successful but your father and the king came back with a boy one who was covered in blood and dirt he was skinny and frail.
He grew up poor and hungry his mother a prostitute as well as a drug addict he always had to fight for his next meal not just for himself but his siblings.
The king saw something in him that day that he never explained.
He stayed at the castle and crew up along side the two of you from that day forward it took him a while to get used to it all but he eventually broke in.
The princess started to pay him more attention and worry about him she wanted to do her best to make him feel at home.
This started to bother you but at the time you didn't understand why but once you realized your feelings you knew that you were in love with her and eventually he was too but you never treated him any differently because he was still your friend and comrade
