An Unexpected visit

Ashley's POV:
The weekend after Easter, we celebrated my birthday by having a party on our backyard. It was a beautiful reception. Kate had taken extra care to decorate the backyard with white ribbons. There was a golden flower at every center of the tables, and the deck was shining with the twinkling of white icile lights that trailed over the trees and shrubs to create the illusion of a fairyland. (Idk what to put XD ). And each of us had been assigned with a dancing partner. Kate assigned me with Tom.
Welp...
The night of the party was soft and dreamy, with a warm breeze drifting in and out of our backyard. Everyone danced until the balls of our feet hurt. Kate and I just slipped off our flat heels and dance in our feet. Tom kept stepping on my toes, so I had to jump back every time he got "Creative". It was silly, but we laughed about it most of the night.
By midnight, I was still keeping an eye on his his shiny shoes to avoid him stepping on my toes when I saw something moving behind the trees to the left of the house. At the rustle of the leaves, I froze and Tom bumped into me head -on, almost knocking me to the ground. He grabbed me at my corsage to try to keep me from falling.
"Ow", he said, releasing me suddenly.
"Are you alright? " I asked, keeping an eye to the left of me, trying to figure out who was hiding behind that tree.
For a second I thought it might be Kate looking for fireflies, cause you know she's Kate, but she was dancing awkwardly with Edd.
"I cut myself on your corsage," Tom said, sucking on the blood of his index finger.
"Let me see, " I said, examining his hand. "It's just a pinprick. You'll live."
"Oh yeah, tell that to sleeping beauty," he said sarcastically while he pointed at Matt was standing near the food stand taking selfies.
We both laughed until I saw, in the corner of my eye, a man stepped out of the shadows into the well -lit yard.
"Oh my god," I whispered.
"Is something wrong?" Tom asked, following my gaze.
Tord stood in front of the two lime trees, looking across the dance floor with his hands in his pockets. However it wasn't me he wasn't looking at, but it was..... Kate?
"I'll be right back," I said, leaving Tom next to Matt.
As I walked toward him, Tord turned to look at, and his face broke into a rueful smile that didn't match the sadness in his grey eyes.I had not expected to see him today, but the mildness in his voice told me he had not come to make trouble.
"Happy Birthday, Ash. "
"Thanks, I guess"
"I didn't want to ruin your birthday"
"Right," I said, not sure of what else to say to him.
"I know you weren't expecting me, but I just needed to come. I want to talk to Kate ....about what happened.... I really hope we are still friends," He looked sideways toward Kate, who was still dancing.
"Oh, " I said, suddenly understanding.
"She looks happy."
I turned around to see Edd spin and twirl Kate to the beat to the fast paced music.
"She's always happy."
"Listen about what happened..." Tord began, his voice suddenly full of emotion, and I kinda feel a little bit sorry for him.
Stories about him and what had transpired after he left our house the last time were everyone knew each other. Kate and I couldn't go anywhere without someone giving us the latest gossip, filling the holes where someone has left off.
"What I did was wrong, I made a terrible mistake."
"It's Fine, " I interrupted. " We don't have to talk about it. What's important is that it's over now."
I began to walk back to the party not because I'm avoiding to blow my cover but to save Tom from Matt.
"Oh... Tord, Thanks for coming," I said while I began to walk back to the party again.
"Okay," he whispered. Then, taking one last look around the yard, he turned around and walked away. As he disappeared behind the lime trees, lining the side of the house, I stood trembling in my bare feet, wondering if on what will happen next if he comes back.
Tom came up behind me. He stood silently beside me, looking past the trees and shrubs at the lone figure of the man moving away from the house, crossing the street, and finally driving away in his car.
"And he didn't even bring a present," Tom said under his breath. He puts his arms protectively and leaned in to kiss my cheek.
"He did," I said. His warmth made me feel safe. "You just can't see it. "
I turned around and looked at Kate. She wasn't dancing anymore. She was standing across the yard standing in front of Edd and Matt laughing about something, probably a pun.
"Wanna get a drink?" Tom asked.
"Sure why not."
