Why do like reading so much?

A few weeks ago, I was on the train with my friend, a book open in front of me. And my friend asked me: why do you like reading so much?

We all know that reading a book is extremely beneficial. It considerably improves our vocabulary, and our reading speed. This is why since our childhood, our parents encouraged us to read a lot. Books also help historians; we can learn a lot from them. An example is the bible, which tells plenty about human beliefs. Books help us understand who we were, and how humanity improved. I know those are good reasons to read books, but is it enough to explain the 130 million books edited in the world?

A book is also like a magic wand. It has many superpowers: We could teleport to japan, on the moon, or even in a black hole. We could go around the world, or to Antarctica with a good book. Another superpower is changing identity. We are not English Londoners anymore, but we can be astronauts , spies, explorers. It can also change universe. We could go to Hogwarts, ride a dragon, or fly. And last but not least, a book can control time. We could come back during the second world war, or meet William the conqueror. We could do all of this just by reading. And that’s what I call magic.

Even if books are very special and unique, people have tried to destroy them in the past. During the second world war, the nazis burnt any book that was written by a jew, or that disapproved what Hitler said. Long ago, if a book blasphemed the beliefs of the country, the author would be murdered or jailed. Books helped people realise what was wrong in the society.  The people that destroyed books wanted everyone to think that their way of leading was perfect, they wanted to control what people thought.
If you have to choose a side, choose equality and freedom, choose book side.

And a book can be even more awesome. A book can make people’s beliefs change, and show a point of view we never imagined existed. If a white person read a book in the perspective of a black person during the apartheid, it would change their vision of everything around them. A book can open our eyes on any topic. they can make the world we live in fairer, and they help reduce stereotypes, racism and sexism.

I read because I love magic and equality. And I love magic so much that my life would be over if books stopped existing. They are our only link with the magic world. Do you like magic? I know the answer is yes, so take a book, and read.
