Gender Magic

Summary:

In one clan, this has always been and will always be the case: girls practice shapeshifting, and boys practice healing. There are no trades, no switching,  no 'experimenting', and no practicing the other's magic. It just isn't done. Girls can't practice healing, and boys can't shapeshift. Oh, people have tried, despite the rules, but it's never worked. Any potion made by a girl turns to sludge, and attempts to shapeshift by a boy only makes animals chase the would-be shapeshifter.

But what happens when Charlie Fenna is born without the power to do either magic, but wherever they walk, the breeze trails, and their footsteps always seem to hover just above the ground?

A story about coming to terms with being nonbinary, full of magic, and finding yourself in a world made for two genders.

Optional sequel:

It's been ninety years since Charlie Fenna died, and the rules are the same as ever, with one small exception: neither girls nor boys can fly, and attempts to do so will end in nothing but a concussion.

But, exactly one hundred and seventy-five years to the minute after their namesake was born,  Charlotte comes into the world, and finds out that, like their great-grandparent, their magic is different. They can fly on some days, and not on others. They can make potions and shapeshift, but never on the same days. And for some reason, when they can do the magic of one gender, they feel like that gender too.
