Mermaid tutorial for @kylie_weasleyxo (and anyone else who wants to try) (pt 1)

@kylie_wesleyxo here's the tutorial amiga (btw sorry if I tagged you twice or not at all, idk how this works :/)

Sorry it took so long, we went on roadtrips and stuff and then I had no reception and stuff like that :/

But here it is now hehe :)

Note: if you try to draw this without the pictures, it's probably going to be hard because I'm pretty bad at descriptions. Just saying

I tried to draw her again, but she came out more teenage

If you want her to look more like a child, just make her head bigger

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Here's the reference I was using

(I don't own this picture)

For the sketch, be careful not to draw too hard so that you can erase things later!

You start with a circle for the head

You want to put it in the top left section of the page so you have space for the body

Draw a line down
Be careful it's not completely straight down because her head is a bit tilted
Connect the line to the middle of the circle
What you get should look a little bit like a jaw

Draw a smaller circle for the ear

By now it should look like this (you can draw bigger if you want, just be careful to have space for the body)

Continue with two lines, one from the ear and one from the jaw (not the middle, I messed up a bit here)
If you think the neck looks too thin, you can draw it from the middle of the jaw like I did, and fix it later if you want
Then, draw two lines from the neck, a short one for the shoulder (behind the head) and a longer one for the chest (in front)
Draw a longer line from the shoulder (for the back, go pretty much straight down for the chest, and connect the two lines
Be careful they don't end on the same line!

Draw a straight line down from the chest, then a curved one for the back, and connect them with another curved line (this line is a border between the tail and the rest of the body, so you don't want to erase it later)

Draw a curved line (a kind of half-circle) from the back
Be careful to follow the curvature of the back at first, so the back doesn't look broken

(Sorry for the bad visibility here :( )
Draw another line to finish the tail
Be careful to follow the curvature of the stomach first (like the back, so it doesn't appear broken)
If you look at the reference, you can see that the tail gets a bit thicker before it thins out again, so be careful not to follow the back line of the tail too soon

(Sorry, forgot the arms heh)
Draw a half-circle from the shoulder to about the middle of the first back line

Then draw this stick thingy
Don't worry if the arm looks too long, when you draw it out it's going to look normal
For the hand I would say to look closely at the reference for finger position and try to look at your own hand to see how it moves
You can also try to find guides on Pinterest, YouTube or any other platform
If you don't want to draw hands, she can wear mittens or some other glove-type thing, or you can change them into fins or something of your own choosing
(You might have noticed I drew a line between the back and the stick arm - that's the other arm and that line is all you'll need for it (except for the hand), because the arm is almost entirely behind her body)

Draw the other hand (again, you can look at the reference and your own hand or draw another glove or whatever you did with the first hand)
If you really want to draw hands, you can start with a circle and a couple of sticks, and then draw them out
If you're not good at fingers/hands, it's better if you draw bigger, so you have more space for them
Otherwise, I would say to look at references of hands or guides for drawing them on Pinterest, YouTube or some other platform

Now for the tailfin thingy
Note: you might want to put it lower than I did, because that's how it is on the reference
Start with a circle (it might not be very visible on the picture, but it's next to the end of the tail)
Connect it to the tail with a slightly curved line

Then draw a curved line from about 3/4 around the circle from the first line and connect it to the tail as well (sorry if this makes no sense, I'm bad at descriptions)
Then draw a slightly curved line from the tip if the tail / where the line you drew before that meets the tail
Curve this new line around and then again and again (if you want, you can draw circles there too, as your guide)

Draw a line from the first curve to give it volume and continue the long curved line
You can look at the reference to better see how the line curves

Draw a line as if continuing the first curved line (for volume)
Then add that littly thingy there (sorry idek how to describe it ;^;)

Draw a curved line on the upper side of the tail for another fin
Continue the long curved line to the side of the tail
Again, you can check the reference any time to see what the curves look like and feel free to use circles go help with the curved lines

By now you should have something like this
If your head is this size and you want your mermaid to look more like a child, you need to make her head bigger
This one is going to look more like a teenager
The bigger the head, the younger the thing you're drawing looks
Just be careful not to make it too big, because that throws off the body's proportions
If you want a younger mermaid (or anything you're drawing, really) usually the body is a bit thicker, the hands smaller and chubbier, the face features lower on the face (only with humans!!!) and the eyes bigger
You don't have to wory about the child-like look with this one, because she already looks child-like enough, if you want her to be a child, just make the head a bit bigger

Sorry, got a bit carried away with the art tips :/

Back to the drawing :)

Make this weird looking thing

Make another curved line from above the weird thing you just drew (this is the upper fin, so make it high enough for the lower fin!)
Connect it to the tail with another curved line and connect them so they look like they're attached somwhere
Draw the little thing at the end (farthest away from the tail) to give it volume
Now for the lower fin
Start with an almost(!) straight line from a little above where you finished the upper fin
From the same starting spot as this line, draw one going slightly inward and then out (regarding the tail)
Connect the two with another curved line, and then draw the lil thingies that add volume

And there's gonna have to be a part two because of the image limit :/

See you in the next part ig!
