Fade

You wear a smile
Upon your face
One they don't think you can fake
And yet you can
It's never real
They can't see the pain you feel.

Most of your scars are internal or hidden
They don't know what's in your mind
The pressure you put on yourself
So you conform to their way of life.

The hunger you feel subsides
And emptiness is all that's real
Inside you're screaming to be heard
But the voices drown them out - you're fading.

It's hard to explain
Impossible to leave behind
You claw at your own skin
To try and escape it
But needles are all that penetrate it.

Machines bleep around you
They're all that you hear
But now the voices are getting quieter
Everything seems darker
Because the days are getting shorter
Your heart is beating less - you're fading.

They let you go
You smiled at them and said the words
"It's ok. I feel better than ever."
They believed you and now you're free,
Free to starve, free to bleed, free to fade in peace.

Because while they saw the outside
They couldn't hear the inside
The words couldn't come out
The scars never seemed deep enough to stay
The sun never came out
You were always cold
You were always fading
And now you're gone.

You've been set free
But it doesn't seem right
You can never see them again
You can never tell them the truth
Because your time on Earth was spent hiding alone in the darkness and the silence
You always lied, you said "I'm fine"
But now you can never say
"Honestly? I'm not ok."
