Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Reivew (With Explanations)

A/N: now that I saw fallen kingdom on dvd, in better sound and look to other versions of it I had to unfortunately watch it on because couldn't go to theaters for any reasons, It's time I gave MY review on the film.

Now of course, let me set some ground rules first:

1. This is based on my opinion on the film and the perspective of scenes, characters etc as a whole and should be respected.

2. I will be bringing up other things in the the jurassic franchise besides the previous films.

(And no, that "using supplementary material doesn't help your point on a scene" thing, doesn't mean shit. And in all honesty, it doesn't even hold molecules).

3. I will give some explanations here and there about certain scenes since I should do it to get them off my back.

And with all that being said, lets begin.

I really like how the film starts off. The dark and stormy weather gave some nice atmosphere to the scene. I like how the Mosasaurus moment plays out in the sense that they believe it's been dead after so long, only for them to be lead into a false sense of security until it snuck up from behind and attacked. The next part of it, regarding the Tyrannosaurus, Rexy/Roberta, was really good as well. She has a really cool introduction scene remonstrant to her first appearance in the novel during the main road attack, with the light from the lightning flashing on her head as it was poking over the tree tops. A quick little chase with a man, which would lead into the Mosasaur's tank being open.

(And speaking of which, that device used to opening the gate, while yes, is a design flaw, it's nothing new to this franchise, just go back and look at all the choices and designs Hammond made in the first film or even masroni in world, and you'll see what I mean).

The scene would soon come to an end of the chase after Roberta chomped down on the ladder to the helicopeter in a scene reminiscent to one of the original endings to the first Jurassic Park.

After the end of the later snapped off, leaving the man on it to believe he was safe, only for him to be snatched by the Mosasuarus, said mosasaurus escapes towards the ocean due to the gate now being open.

(which brings to one of the explanations to that being that people were confused on).

To put it first, no, it's not a retcon, the maps you see in fallen kingdom showing the lake near the ocean are wrong. A video here goes into better detail on the situation.

Now skipping that. I want to go to the characters. I like them. Looking at the old ones first:

Claire really has developed from how she was in the first Jurassic world to now. At first, she put prophet and investors satisfaction over all else and she thought she had everything under control. It wouldn't be after an experience in the endangerment of her life, that she would see things differently. To which now, she wanted to help save the dinosaurs while also keeping them away from any further human intervention (kinda like Hammond). She would have to deal with that plan of saving the dinosaurs being shattered after being double crossed and come to a very hard realization.

While Owen wasn't all that much developed as Claire was, he still got development, being that it's sort of a followup to the first Jurassic world film. He was kind of an ass and a fun loving individual. However, he got more cynical and jaded following all that happened after Jurassic world. He couldn't trust anyone after being used by any higher ups and witness all the work he put into training the raptor squad basically fall apart. In the beginning of fallen kingdom, he wanted to forget all that happened and tried to leave it behind. it was only from Claire guiltily him and him looking back at the earlier days that he decided to make the right choice and face the mistakes of his past by trying to reconnect with his only remaining raptor, blue. And when it comes to the ending, it mirrors what happened in the world film in the sense that Owen wanted blue to go. This time, he wanted to her to stay so he could accept his responsibility, but, blue didn't want to after everything that happened.

Plus, Owen and Claire's actions around the end sort parallels the beginning of fallen kingdom since Claire wanted to save the dinosaurs while Owen was okay with just letting them fall back into extinction. It was around the end that Claire, who wanted to try and save them, but after everything, thought it was best to let the dinosaurs die, while Owen was able to care enough about them to not let them die (or at least the responsibility regarding blue). The ultimate choice of course wouldn't be made by them, but another character.

Now for Franklin. He's alright with me. He was sort of a coward around the beginning of the film. He was kinda of annoying a little bit, but not too much. However, he would later man up and grow a spin later on in the film in some times after the Baryonyx attack.

(Also, just for an addition I've seen on some other reviews, where do people seriously keep getting the idea he's a racist stereotype? Because he was scared or some shit? You would be too if you were in his shoes).

Now for Zia. I like her, she really got things going when she threatens wheatley after he and his men double cross Owen, making a good point that if blue is taken for care, she dies, making wheatley's payer mad. It showed that she was able to keep calm even when the odds were against her in situations.

(Some people do find it odd that a Paleo-vet has never seen a dinosaur before would some how know about veterinary before hand. To which I say: just because she didn't see it, doesn't mean she didn't study in veterinary before hand. Plus, lets not forget in the first film, Ellie tried to analyze the reason for the sick triceratops despite not treating a dinosaur before? Besides, all she had to do was extract a bullet and give a blood transfusion. Which is something I'll get into later).

Anyway, claire's mission is to save the dinosaurs and take them off isla nublar before mount sibo (a nod to the 2011 jp game) erupts.

(The volcano has also been there since the beginning and you can even find it on the Jurassic world maps. And some could argue on why would Hammond build a park on an island with a volcano. But, you need to realize that the volcano wasn't active at the time and it would act as a good source for Geo thermal energy. This was state in universe for both nublar and sorna. Also, knowing Hammond, it was cheap for him).

This is where she seeks help from benjamin lockwood (Hammond 2.0 which some people annoyingly call him). He was an old business partner of Hammond (and based on Norman Atherton from the novels). Thoughts on Lockwood? He was an interesting character with a rather sad past. He's sort of a tragic character. Though, not as tragic as another one we will get to.

(As for why Hammond never brought him up after their fall out because of the intentions Lockwood wanted, it's because it would have been bad for Hammond's business. And yes, I said intentions and not act lockwood did because Colin explained that little situation as well).

(I'll pm the link to anyone who wants to see it).

They head off to isla nublar and we get some really good scenes on the island. Wheatley's betrayal, the destruction of the island (another novel idea) and by far one of the most saddest scenes in the entire jurassic franchise. Not only giving us the last time we get to see isla nublar, but the people and viewers being treated to a good by from the very same brachiosaurus that said hello so many years ago. Not only showing the end of a creature we've known since the beginning, but the end of the island that's been there since the very beginning and there's no way of ever going back there again.

(Before anyone says that Owen was acting ridiculous for taking his anger out on wheatley and his men for shooting blue. Stop reading this, go back and watch the film CAREFULLY this time and you'll know that Owen had a plan and told them to wait for his signal, which they didn't).

I will admit though, the scene with Owen trying to escape the lava while being a limp from the dart was a little awkward, but, it's not all that much. And no, his face should not have burned up unless the lava was touching him directly.

And, I should probably bring up the moment in which people talk about the part of Owen outrunning an ash could and thinking he should be dead. I'll leave another video from shinboi to give better detail on this and everyone's favorite Hollywood cliche, plot armor.

https://youtu.be/nSQTfXWjhGo

(And for the record, looking at the coloration of the ash cloud in the film compared to a pyroclastic flow you'll see in videos and images, they look nothing alike).

And the gyosphere, there's reasons to why the bullet was able to break through the gyosphere's glass underwater. Especially since jimmy fallon's video on the glass was completely over-exaggerated.

https://youtu.be/RCFAqZyNQq0

(I know I'm relaying a little too much on shinobi for some of these, but, he's has better detailed explanation on this as well as better knowledge of guns, and bullet types).

Even bullet proof/bullet resistant glass can deteriorate over time when it's not tended to or anything.

(Now here's the thing about the little blood transfusion scene regarding getting roberta's blood and giving it to blue. It's a little thing called Xenotransfusion. it's been something tested on different species in real life and it was very much effective on different occasions. It would be risky doing it a second time however. Depending of the immune system of the receiver, There would be complications like severe allergic reactions or breaking down red blood cells. Once the foreign blood is transferred into the body receiving the blood, it will recognize it as foreign cells and antibodies we be produced to reject the new blood).

(Now, one could ask if Roberta was really the only option for blue? To put it simply, yes. As Zia said in the film itself, Tyrannosaurus and Velociraptor are the most compatible since they're both part of the Tyrannoraptora family. Other carnivores were out of the question because they were part of a whole different family and their blood wouldn't have worked. The Comsognithus was too small and they would have needed to take all the blood out of a lot of them and Gallimimus was in a much smaller cage that wouldn't have given Owen and Claire a place to hid so they could take the blood. Also, it was taken wide awake, it would have made a lot of noise. Roberta was large enough, sedated and was in a cage for the two to hide in. She was the only option).

(And before anyone asks why no one went to check on the tyrannosaurus when it was making noise, you've got a ship full of these damn things and we know that there are at least some of them who are awake. Also, not everyone who was there was with wheatly in the assassination attempt on Owen's life. So they'd really wouldn't react to them being there. Also, it's an enormous crowd, you really want to expect them to keep up with everyone involved).

Now, things really do start getting exciting when we get to the Lockwood manner. All the dinosaurs are placed in cages once more (with a quick call back to the first film with Roberta and the goat) and we soon find out that

(Also, some people might be wondering about if Lockwood would hear the noise of the animals going on downstairs. As said before, he was based on Norman Atherton, who was the chief geneticist in ingen's earlier years and the mentor of Wu. He was the one who showed ingen's genetic capabilities to investors when he made dwaf elements in a project known as pachyderm portfolio. According to Colin Trevorrow, this (while not entirely) is part of Lockwood's backstory. In film canon, Wu cloned baby elephants using Lockwood's lab before going to dinos. The lab was build by both Lockwood and Hammond in the sub-basement. This is stated in the film by Mills. He would have clearly also need to soundproof the lab so no outsiders can hear any noises. That's why he can't hear them).

One of the new characters, Maisie Lockwood, sneaks into the lab after being concerned from mills yelling at her when she heard him saying some rather suspicious stuff on the phone, she sees all that was going on in the sub-basement and eventually ran into a little secret both mills and wu have been keeping from Lockwood. The creature foreshadowed in the first jurassic world and the new hybrid of the film, The Indoraptor.

I really do love this hybrid here. Here's not some down scale indominus as some people will try to tell you. He's much more different from her. He's a flawed prototype and extremely dangerous. He's smart enough to fool his enemies as seen when he's shot with only two darts from wheatly and fakes defeat. However, I do think that a deleted scene from the film should have been kept in the film to foreshadow wheatly's death. They had to use 3 darts to take it out instead of two. Two darts were only slowing it down. And which also explains why blue was doing so well against the indoraptor. This creature was sadistic in what it did. It basically toyed around with it's prey and lead it into a false sense of security before going for the kill.

Sometime after Maisie encounter's it and is locked in her room, Lockwood demands to have mills see him. which not only would foreshadow something regarding Maisie, but, after watching Klayton Fioriti's review on this film, I can see what the name fallen kingdom truly means. The manner was The Castle, Lockwood was the king, Maisie was the princess, Mills was a most trusted adviser who would later betray him and the indoraptor being the dragon.

Mills really is a very big step up from the previous jurassic park/world villains. Nerdy was sabotaged the park and stole the embryos to an unknown wanter of them. Ludlo was a greedy buisness man, but was willing to cooperate with others to get things done and get off the island and he tried to prove he could be better than his uncle, only to see he made the same mistakes and hoskins was a man working for jurassic world and had public safety as his interest to why he wanted to weaponize dinosaurs. In fallen kingdom, we're given true villains, true assholes who care about no one or nothing but having money, wheatly is a man only doing this to get his money and is a cruel bastard to the animals by tearing a tooth out of each of him. His death would be well deserved.

As for Mills. He's kind of a mix of novel Hammond and novel Dodgson. He was a greedy business man who threw all common sense and logic aside whenever the opportunity to gain money is given to him. Which is why he took the chance to sell the indoraptor after showing it off in the auction, despite it being a prototype. And he's basically the first human villain to kill someone in cold blood. And he definitely got what was coming to him in his death.

(Which if people are wondering why they were showing it off? They were trying to give the people there a simple taste of what would come when they get a much better and perfected version of the creature).

The auction goes on for a while and both Claire and Owen, who were eventually found out on a trunk when trying to sneak into the manner, intimidate a Stygimoloch into breaking the wall next to it's cell before breaking their cell door and escaping, where they meet up with maisie and plan to take down the auction before the indoraptor can be sold off. Owen manages to trick the stygi into going into an elevator, which leads to the auction room where the stygimoloch rams into people and Owen takes down the guards and stuff. To which lead into wheatly's death as well as the death of a few others. Then we reach the biggest twist and in my opinion the most shocking twist of the film, Maisie is a human clone. A shocking thing that was foreshadowed through out the film and the reason Hammond and Lockwood cut ties. This idea really isn't outlandish when you actually peal back the layers. It's a franchise following the cloning of dinosaurs, humans are not weirder than that and are also more likely to clone compared to dinosuars. And from the link to Colin's tweet before on this, this is not a plot hole.

So, after the reveal of Maisie being a clone, the indorpator attacks the group and chases maisie with not only a reference to the first jurassic film, but to some old monster movies too. The indoraptor would have maisie cornered in her room, where he would slowly approach her (installing more fear into her as he's saving her moments of terror) before blue comes in and attacks him, leading to a battle that would end with blue victorous and the indoraptor impaled on the horns of a fake Agujaceratops skull (which was not a an Ex Machina, it was foreshadowed throughout the film).

Then we get to the moment of the film where it all leads up to the tough decision on if the dinosaurs should live or die. The decision of which is ultimately made by maisie herself. In which she says quite honestly one of the best lines of the film: They're alive, like me. (And it was maisie release the dinosaurs that the majority of people who reviewed this film tried to demonize this little girl as if everything, EVERYTHING is her fault. But you know what? No, it's not).

(I don't blame maise for what she did. Put yourself in her shoes for starters. She was in so much damn emotional stress that one child could ever have taken in one night. The one who cared for her in her life was murdered, her mother figure was kicked out of her life, she soon found out she wasn't a naturally born human (by the same rat bastard that killed the one who cared for her and was shammed by him, mind you), chased by a aggressive monster that tried to kill her and The creatures that were made the same way she was were being killed off for not being natural. Of course she would sympathize with these creatures and let them free. It may have been on an impulse, but, she's a child. Children do not get worried of what they do until it's too late. Especially if it was for the best of intentions. Kind like what alan grant said in jp3)

How dare people blame this little girl as if she's the soul reason dinosaurs are now lose. There were people who bought the dinosaurs from the auction and shipped them overseas, then there were people who made off with embryos to a secret location. The people at the auction are the ones to be blamed here. Maisie's act was impulsive but selfless while the people at the auction had selfish reasons for taking these animals.

Now for the ending, I love it. It finally took the one thing from the original novel that me and likely a mount of others have been waiting for. Dinosaurs now free in the mainland.

And before anyone can try to say that them being out will not be a big deal. I'll let shinobi tackle this

https://youtu.be/kkSLU9lwwGw

(And with colin trevorrow coming out to say that they won't be attacking cities or anything, it's safe to say that it'll act with people beginning to disappear in forest areas or ships begin missing due to the mosasaur).

Anyway, that's everything. That was Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. I'll go over the cons first. Like I said before, the comedy with Owen with the lava was kinda odd, but it's not a big deal.

I do think at least some mention of the conditions of isla sorna and why they can't send the dinosaurs there should have been brought up since I think it could have helped with some confusion to people who didn't follow the canon DPG website.

And I do think the deleted scene with the indoraptor was kept in for some foreshadowing.

But, those are just a few little issues.

For the pros.

The story was really good.

The film has a spectacular soundtrack.

The pacing was a little fast but not all that fast. It was still good.

The CGI looks good as it did in the first jw film. (I honestly fail to see where people complain about the cgi. I think it's been an improvement since the first 3 films).

It has a lot of emotional moments that really got to me.

And the call backs to the old films and material were great and shows how much they actually do care for this franchise.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was a great film to sit through. It's my second favorite of the films, with the original at first and I really appreciate the work that went into the direction J.A. Bayona took and the writing done by Colin Trevorrow.

That's all for my review on jurassic world fallen kingdom and the explanations of some of it's scenes. If there's anything I've missed, by all means, let me know in the comments. And if you want, you can leave your own thoughts and opinions on the film and what you thought. Anyway, that's all I need to give on this.
