RWBY Was Broken From The Start
It's been a while since I've gone into detail about my criticisms of this show. I understand that a lot of you got annoyed with my constant complaining in my previous account, but I just want to get this off my chest. This chapter is not to criticize Monty Oum but more so his execution in ideas. He had a bright future ahead with ideas that could've been fixed with time to think.
RWBY was broken from the beginning, in concept and execution. I'm gonna list off a few examples to in just the first few episodes I had watched. The first few episodes of the entire series ranging from 1-14.
1. Team RWBY
The main characters of RWBY follow Team RWBY. Consisting of Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long. The basis in the beginning of the show was for these four girls to become a team in Beacon Academy and hunt Grimm, the main antagonists of the show. Problem is, they don't go through any growth at all in that aspect.
The very first time we see them is in their respective trailers. These all apply to the show as the events in the trailers actively go with the series. Ruby Rose fights off and easily kills an entire horde of Grimm, something any normal hunter would spend a long time building up to. Weiss Schnee takes down a giant piece of armor which would've been the same level as a high class grimm like a Deathstalker. The same armor was later revealed to have been possessed by a high level Grimm that took an entire team to take down, the Geist. Blake Belladonna was able to easily take down an entire squadron of advanced machines from Atlas, only needing to take down the Spider Mech with the help of Adam. Yang Xiao Long completely solos and entire gang hideout, plus two huntress level opponents, with ease.
You see the problem here? How are we supposed to see their growth if they're all expert fighters at the very beginning? It's the equivalent of seeing Goku have Super Saiyan 3 in the Saiyan Saga. The only time this worked out to my knowledge was in One Punch Man, a mainly parody series. How can they become huntresses if they're perfectly able to take down powerful opponents with minimal effort?
Let's also take into look at their absolutely ridiculous coordination. In the end of the Emerald Forest Initiation, RWBY and JNPR come face to face with two high level Grimm, the Deathstalker and a giant Nevermore. With half of the group barely knowing each other for the past few hours. Ruby and Yang I can understand considering they are siblings, but Weiss and Blake have never seen each other's fighting styles or even know their semblances. From what I remember, Ruby and Weiss barely fought before that big battle so how would Ruby know what Weiss's semblance is?
Within ten minutes of the girls meeting each other to create their team, they are capable of perfectly coordinating with each other despite their limited knowledge of the entire group. Any other character would've had extreme difficulty with this but these girls are able to expertly pull this off. If that doesn't yell "Mary Sue energy" then trust me there's a lot later.
2. Ruby Rose
The main character of the series had a massive problem from the very first episode. Ruby explains to Ozpin and the audience that her dream is to become a huntress. That's it, no underlying or specific goals to accomplish, she wants to become a huntress. Considering we saw her kill a horde of Beowolves with little effort, we can already see she is capable of being one. Within the very beginning of the series, Ruby Rose has accomplished her goal.
That's not an enticing character, not by a long shot. Goku wants to become the strongest, but has to constantly train and improve because of so many stronger enemies. Naruto wants to become Hokage, one of the most prestigious jobs imaginable in his world while being a loser from the beginning. Izuku wants to become the strongest hero, something he needed help with and train because he was given that power. Ruby has no goals because she accomplished them already. It would've been easier if she said "I want to be the greatest huntress in history." Simple but more effective.
I've said this before and call it bias if you want, but Jaune would've made a better protagonist. He's the worst of the entire academy and it would've been more intriguing to see him grow and become a stronger hunter as the series continues.
3. The Grimm are pathetic
The Grimm are supposed to be the main enemy of humanity, creatures of darkness and hatred that have nearly brought humanity to extinction. Well, you would believe that if they actually did anything. It's a bad case of "tell don't show." We are told the Grimm are dangerous monsters but it's kinda sad how easily they are killed off. Beowolves are fodder monsters I can understand that, but a single girl with plot armor is able to take out a bunch of them. Not a good look. The stakes do rise a bit in the emerald forest but it doesn't help at all. Both high level Grimm are take out by two teams who just formed together. I mean hell the giant raven Grimm was decapitated by said single girl with big scythe. Easily the worst part is when Nora just tortures an Ursa by making it run into the group and saying "Aw it broke." What a way to devalue your main villains.
I want to end this with possibly the biggest "why" idea in RWBY, that being Pyrrha Nikos. Don't get me wrong, I like Pyrrha's character. I think she's charming but...oh my god she makes no sense. Back to the first point, Pyrrha joins Beacon to become a huntress. The very first time we are introduced to Pyrrha, we are told she is the most experienced fighter in the entire school, has won numerous tournaments, and has an entire freaking brand deal for a cereal box. Pyrrha is not a student she is a celebrity. Why is this girl going to school which is shown to have history lessons and fighting lessons when she is shown to already be experts on? The only reason I can actually believe is that they needed to give Jaune a love interest, but uh...that didn't work out did it?
