Whether it was the weaving sands of time done by Liu Kang or Kronika, a new timeline was born, but it was far more disjointed and random than one could have imagined.

In Earthrealm, a new champion was chosen. Kung Lao, the descendant of the Great Kung Lao, had defeated his closest friend Liu Kang in kombat. He would be the chosen warrior of Earthrealm, under the guidance and tutelage of the guardian of Earthrealm, Fujin. Meanwhile, in the special forces, Sergeant Johnny Cage and Jax Briggs are to hunt down not only the international crime lord Kano, but also a traitor to the United States, Sonya Blade, who had gone rouge after seemingly a mission gone wrong with cooperator Kabal.

On the other side of the world, the most elite assassins of the world, the Lin Kuei, had all become cybernetic versions of themselves. Bi-Han, Sektor, and Cyrax had become killing machines, practically unkillable. They were to be the most powerful ninja clan in the world, if it wasn't for the betrayal of Bi-Hans brother, Kuai Liang. With his friend, Smoke, they stole the Dragon Amulet after killing the grandmaster, causing the Lin Kuei to create a worldwide manhunt for the two.

Deep in the pits of the Netherrealm, the warlord Scorpion, formally known as Hanzo Hisashi, had become the king of hell after disposing of Quan Chi. The sorcerer originally tried to control Hanzo for his own benefit, being the one behind the death of his clan and family, but Hanzo's rage was too great, and he burned the sorcerer to ash. With that the cult of Shinnok had been disbanded. Hanzo's goal was to return to the real world, to finally kill the man who killed his family. In order to achieve this goal, he must travel to the Chaosrealm first.

Outworld, ruled by the dictator Shao Khan, was only one more victory away from being able to invade Earthrealm. Originally, he had taken over Edenia, where he killed the king and queen, taking their daughter for himself to be his own daughter. Kitana had grown to be a ruthless woman, obtaining her stepfather's worst attributes for herself, becoming cold and uncaring even as the people below her suffered. However, she is no slouch in combat as Outworld was experiencing a constant state of Civil War. Jade, Kitana's best friend, had betrayed her to join a revolutionary movement with Kotal Khan, along with the aid of Reptile, who wishes to bring his species back from extinction, and the Tarkatan war band known as the Feral Claw. The leader of this warband being Baraka and the bastard clone of Kitana, Mileena, who was to be Kitana's sister in arms, but was deemed a defective creature and thrown to the wild and replaced with Skarlet. Shang Tsung, Outworlds chief scientist and master of the mythical arts, has secretly conspired with both sides in order to take the thrown for himself when they both eventually destroy each other, holding a small armada of clones from various warriors, even the one of the dead queen of Edenia, Sindel.

One of the strangest figures of all the realms is a being known as Raiden. Seemingly an enforcer for the Elder Gods, he holds absolute power and seemingly comes from the Orderrealm. Not only that, but he is aided by two other individuals known as Rain and Ashrah. He is the one who watches over the Mortal Kombat tournaments, declaring who is the victor and to spot any and all disturbances that the side may try to do in an attempt to win.

The final Mortal Kombat tournament is coming, and Outworld needs all but one more win in order to take over Earthrealm. Kung Lao and Liu Kang have been chosen, with Fujin hoping they will be enough to take down the honorable champion, Goro. Johnny and Jax join as they have gained intel stating that not only Kano, but Sonya will be there. Bi-Han, Sektor, and Cyrax join, as they have a suspicion that Kuai Liang and Smoke shall be there as well. As Raiden and his two allies prepare to begin the games, Raiden has a feeling that this shall not be the end of Mortal Kombat for Earthrealm.
