Godzilla: King of The Monsters Review
A/N: It's finally time for me to make my review that I've been wanting to do ever since the film came out.
This is my review of Godzilla: King of The Monsters.
Let's get started.
The Story.
The story wasn't this grand tour monster mash or epic heroes journey that some people may expect. But, a great story that they managed to do here being The idea of Godzilla having to face off with another alpha predator like him for the role as king of the monsters was a nice classic fighting for the throne type of story but in kind of an apocalyptic feel to it.
Tone.
As I said, the film is kinda more like an action packed apocalyptic type of film with some dark tones here and there with a little comedy. But not too much.
The Soundtrack.
One of my favorite things to come out of this movie is the soundtrack. They not only managed to bring back the original Akira Ikufube music from the Toho films, but, they managed to make some of their own music that was both enjoyable and astonishing to listen to and remember. Some of the music really gave the feel of the tone of the movie as well as just how terrifying or destructive some of the titans can truly be.
The Human Characters.
The human characters were better in this film than before. I'll first go over some of the returning characters in this film.
Admiral Stenz is the same as he was in the 2014 film. He has a sort of no-nonsense and serious demeanor to him, caring greatly for civilian lives. But, not being the the stereotypical depiction of military commanders/government agents in other movies. He still shows a great deal of respect to serizawa, but there are times where he will have to refuse serizawa's suggestions give the circumstances. In this film, he has to do the same here. Given how Dangerous Ghidorah was and the situation involving godzilla, he had no choice to but use the oxygen destroyer on the two titans in an attempt to kill them. However, it failed to kill the two.
Dr. Vivienne Graham is her same self as she was in the 2014 film, someone who looked up to Serizawa as a father figure and was one of the two who understood the titans and their godly powers and strength. She didn't last long within the film as during Godzilla's first battle, Ghidorah devours her.
(And I didn't even see it coming).
Ishirō Serizawa is now a lot more respected figure in the world as governments look to him as the leading authority on the Titans. However, he still deals with the problem being what the governments wish to intend on doing about Godzilla and any other titans after the 2014 event. And it wouldn't help that he was having to deal with an echo-terrorist who was trying to awaken the titans. After Monster Zero was release, Serizawa had grieved over the loss over the Vivienne as he noticed her brilliance and she was someone who's been close to him for years during the time. Some moments such as when it's discovered what ghidorah was, Serizawa showed hate towards the creature and called it a False King. And after finding out that Godzilla had survived the oxygen destroyer, he was willing to sacrifice himself in order to set off the bomb and fully restore godzilla's strength. During his last moments, Serizawa removed his helmet, approached Godzilla, placed a hand on the titan and said his goodbyes to the one being he's shown so much respect to and considered an old friend.
The New Human Characters.
The Russells were a family who did no have the best things going for them after what happened after the 2014 event, which resulted in the death of Andrew. Mark and Emma became estranged after suffering a loss in the Battle of San Francisco. Their opposing views on the Titans added to their personal conflict. Emma wanted to protect them and figure out how mankind and the Titans can co-exist peacefully as she believed they can. However, Mark believed the Titans are destructive beasts that should be destroyed, especially Godzilla, as they have brought his family nothing but trouble and grief. The two of them cared about Madison dearly after all that went on. Emma took Madison around the world with on assignments and taught her everything she knows about Titans. However, despite Madison being gifted in her studies, Emma denied her requests for access to outpost containment units. Madison's relationship with her father has been slightly distant but she still loved him and remains in contact with him as she called him several times a week. Mark's knowledge on how animal packs worked well to build up on how he knew about what Ghidorah was doing and how other kaiju were appearing and attacking at that point. The tension and drama between the family would go on through moments of the film as Emma and Madison were being held hostage by the film's antagonist, Alan Jonah. During that time with Alan, Emma realizes the mistake it was to awaken Ghidorah as she saw what Ghidorah's actions were doing. It was during the final battle that Emma was able to redeem herself, though, at the result of her own life to save the lives for the ones she cares for and allow Godzilla to defeat Ghidorah, become king and restore balance once more.
Alan Jonah was a great human villain in this film. He's an echo-terrorist who was a man troubled by his experiences in the army and seeing the worst in humanity firsthand. He went to whatever lengths to remove humanity as the dominant species of the world and allow the titans to rule it again. Even if it was to allow Ghidorah to have control and destroy the world for his own need.
The secondary characters were also entertaining to sit through some like Rick were good for a few laughs while also being helpful during certain situations of the film.
Also, they nailed the whole thing with the twins was great to make their own technical spin on the Shobijin for the monsterverse.
The Titans.
Each of the 4 main titans of this film played their parts very well and each of them all sounded amazing. All baring their classic toho roars, albeit, modified.
Mothra's symbiotic relationship with Godzilla was a nice new idea brought to the table in the monsterverse and the films does a good job showing just how much she and Godzilla are close. Not only does she ignore the alpha call of Ghidorah, but, she assisted the humans in finding Godzilla and helped Godzilla within the final battle to where she had to give her own life in order for Godzilla to win, where in a way, they became one. She truly was Queen of The Monsters.
Rodan was like a destructive rouge when it came to the titans in the film. No one knew where his loyalty would lie. He was not only a destructive beast, but, a dangerous combatant in the air, as seen when he takes on Ghidorah and held his own for a short while before being put in his place. He was even able to give mothra some trouble during the final battle until she took him out. After Ghidorah was disposed of, Rodan pledged his loyalty to his new alpha.
Ghidorah was an awesome kaiju villain in this film. There's some funny moments where the middle head is being a dick to one of the other heads where it's either hitting it or biting on it's horn. However, despite those small laughs, Ghidorah still proved to be a force to be reckoned with as he managed to give Godzilla trouble their first time around, defeated Rodan with one gravity beam blast, had control over storms and basically took control of the other titans for his own use and was an all out deadly force in combat, in both land and sky. He even managed to survive the oxygen destroyer getting him. It wasn't until Godzilla took on his burning form that Ghidorah had met his end.
Godzilla was even better in this film compared to 2014. He was faster, stronger, more sufficient in combat. He even had moments where he had the original toho roar. It gave me chills every time I heard it. I've already gone over his relationship with mothra. However, serizawa's sacrifice lead to Godzilla becoming stronger than ever before and pumping him up with so much nuclear energy, he was ready to burst. In the final battle, he was giving Ghidorah a hard time, ghidorah only got lucky when he juiced himself with more electricity and dropped godzilla up form the atmosphere. But even then, after mothra sacrificed herself for him, her energy gave godzilla one last boost to give ghidorah one burning hell as he obliterated him and completely burned the remaining to death inside out. With Ghidorah gone, the titans that arrived at boston now were loyal to Godzilla as he had earned his title as King.
Speaking of the other titans, their designs for this film were a nice new look than what I was expecting.
Behemoth was this cool mix between a mammoth and a gorilla.
Scylla was a large six legged spider with tentacle like appendages near her mouth.
Methuselah kinda looked like a creature out of star wars, but with a more earthly appearances as he had rocks and trees over his body.
And the last new titan came off as a surprise to me as there was yet ANOTHER MUTO in this film. I was so surprised by this since I thought after the 2014 film and Aftershock, Godzilla had taken care of the rest of the species. This individual looked slightly different from the others as it had a more spiky and gray appearance. And what makes this more insane is that the muto was one of the titans bowing to godzilla in the end. Godzilla even made one of his own ancient rival species bow to him at this point.
The Titan battles.
The battle between the monsters in this film were all great to watch. I do kinda wish the one between rodan and ghidorah was a bit longer, but, I can't complain too much on that. Each respected Monster battle had it all happen within one awesome setting after another. One with Godzilla and Ghidorah in Antarctica and ghidorah even used his own hole he walked out of in an attempt to get Godzilla. Rodan and Ghidorah's battle in a thunderstorm was very well shot and the idea of such a fight sounds like something in a rock band cover. And the final battle of course was my favorite. Godzilla and Ghidorah clashing one on one. Mothra gets to have a hit on Ghidorah before rodan steps into the fray and he and mothra tussle for a while. And it all ends in a burning and explosive conclusion with Godzilla as the victor of course. I'll even say that not only did the battles feel like something out of the toho films, they felt like the kinda of battles out of the Heisei Gamera films. So that's a big plus for me.
The after credits scenes.
I loved what went on with the after credits. A glimpse at what appears to possible be Mothra's egg, a look at a wall painting for a certain event that's to come. and Alan Jonah wanting one of Ghidorah's dismembered heads for something. What it will be is left for us to find out in the future.
Now then, I've gone over all the things I loved about this movie. Now for some of the cons I have about it. They're not too big though.
Cons.
Like I said before, I do wish the Rodan and Ghidorah fight was a bit longer.
There were at least 2 moments in the film where it seemed like the characters got from one spot to another real fast. Like when Madison was shown far from the building ghidorah was attacking or when Ghidorah grabbed Godzilla and got him up to the atmosphere. I know that it's to be indicated as quick time skips since we know they aren't that fast. But, they just seemed a little quick within those moments.
I kinda wanted to a little more mothra moments mainly because I thought that she was one of the more interesting titans in the film next to the other 3 and I was hoping to see more of her when she came out of her cocoon. Not too big of a problem, she still made her time in the film worth it.
And the cons stop there if I'm honest.
Now on where I score this movie.
This film managed to Score high on Godzilla movies I loved a lot. It's earned itself a 9/10. It's got some minor flaws, but, they're not too big to get in the way of everything else.
