Sai oneshot.

Love is... Colourful

"Moshi moshi! Are there any lost dolls in here?! I'll take you home with me!"

The black haired shinobi's eyes fell on the little girl that was leaning into a gap in a precariously stable collapsed building.

"Don't go in there. It's dangerous; it could collapse at any moment on top of you." the girl backed out of the hole, took one look at Sai's blank expression, and fled.

'I didn't mean to scare her..' Sai thought to himself, but brushed it off as he walked away, the sound of the girl telling her friends what had happened in the background.

He soon came to a large tree stump. It was attached to two ropes, being pulled out by some shinobi. He recognised one in the group; her bright purple ponytail stood out in the crowd. But he just kept walking, not wanting to bother her. Though, naturally, she had spotted him anyway, when she put down the rope to stretch out her arms. She rose an eyebrow at the three children following him, but said nothing as she was called to help again.

While walking, Sai's eyes caught on a splash of bright pink in amongst some rubble. He sat down in front of it and started to paint.

"Whoa, you're really good!" a voice sounded right beside him, and Sai quickly scrambled to his feet, hiding the picture of the flower from view. The little girl from earlier stood in front of him, with two friends.

"Are you a Mangaka?!" the boy asked,

"Or a painter?!" the other girl asked also,

"Or maybe a traveller from another village?!" the girl from before exclaimed. Sai shook his head.

"No, I'm not."

"Then what are you doing drawing out here?" the boy asked.

"I had the day off, so I decided to go for a walk around the village."

"Ne, ne!" the girl exclaimed, "Will you show us your other pictures?"

Sai tried his best to act normal, putting on a nervous smile. "My paintings aren't meant for the eyes of others."

The three children looked heartbroken, and Sai was at a loss for what to do. 'Oh no, I shouldn't have said it like that.'

He quickly painted three fluffy creatures, and animated them with his jutsu. The three children giggled and made chase of the drawn animals. The shinobi let out a sigh of relief.

"Hey, wait up!" the little girl from before, with pigtails, exclaimed, chasing after the squirrel.

"Got you!" the long haired girl said as she scooped up a rabbit.

The boy cooed to the cat as he attempted to sneak up on it. But, just as he bent to reach it...

"Oh no! My pants ripped!" he cried, and the long-haired girl sniffed.

"I'm not surprised they ripped; you should be more careful." the boy smirked and stood.

"My Dad says that boys like me run around a lot and should rip clothes." the girl glared at him.

"Well, what about your Mum who has to spend her time mending them?!"

"Uh-oh, here we go again.." the pigtailed girl mumbled from where she stood next to Sai.

"Rr.. shut up, ugly!" the long-haired girl twitched, and the boy quickly slammed his hand over his mouth. He really shouldn't of said that.

"WHO ARE YOU CALLING UGLY?!"

"A-ah, no I didn't-"

"I'll teach you!!"

"Itai!!"

Sai blinked at them for a moment, then smiled and chuckled, seeing the large bump on the boy's head.

'Sakura used to hit Naruto like that all the time.' his paintbrush started to move over the page, forming into a picture of Sakura punching Naruto.

"Hey, are they your friends?" the pigtails girl asked, looking at the picture. Sai went to speak, but cut off.

"Hm.. no, they're more my comrades." he answered, eyes hazing with memories for a moment. The girl looked confused.

"But comrades are friends, aren't they?"

Sai jumped in surprise as something hit into his back, "But I'm your friend, right, Sai-kun?"

He didn't need to look to see who it was; the arms wrapping around his neck in a hug were answer enough.

"Ohayo, Misaki-chan." the purple-haired kunoichi grinned, releasing Sai and sitting on a fallen beam that was just high enough that she was about his height.

"Who're you?" the little boy asked, staring at her, a slight blush on his face.

"Misaki! And aren't you three just the cutest!"she cooed, ruffling the boy's spiky hair. "But I have some things to talk about with Sai-kun, so why don't you run along? I hear they're selling ice cream near the park."

The children looked at each other a second, then beamed and ran off excitedly. Misaki smiled as she watched them run away.

"So, what did you need to speak with me about?" Sai asked once they were gone, and Misaki shrugged.

"Dunno, just wanted to talk to ya." she smiled, and Sai just looked at her. She sighed a little, before sending him a concerned look.

"Is something the matter? You seemed a little depressed when you passed the worksite earlier." Sai blinked as she folded her legs neatly and turned to face him fully.

"No, I'm fine." he eyed her a moment. "Misaki? Are you okay?"

The kunoichi shrugged as she turned to face forward again, her legs swinging from the beam. She leaned against Sai tiredly, resting her head on his shoulder. "I don't know, Sai... I just don't know."

Sai moved his free hand to his face, feeling the skin there. It felt oddly hot, like a hot air fan was blowing on his cheeks. His eyes widened a second. He wasn't blushing, was he?

"Oh! Now I remember what I wanted to tell you!" Misaki exclaimed, then scowled. "But I have something I have to do first, so I'll come and find you later. Bye, Sai-kun!"

Sai just stared after her as she skipped away, slightly confused. What just happened?

---

It was a few hours later when Sai was tackled again, and a giggle sounded in his ear.

"Heya Sai-kun!"

"Konbanwa, Misaki-chan." Misaki stood up and pulled him to his feet, seemingly oblivious to the faint pink that dusted the boy's cheeks.

"Come with me, Sai-kun!" she exclaimed, pulling him along by his hand at such a pace that Sai struggled to keep up.

"Where are we going?" he asked, and the kunoichi laughed.

"It's the place that I wanted to tell you about earlier." she said, then glancing at him with her clear blue eyes that caused a stutter in Sai's heartbeat. "But I'm not telling you anything else because it's a surprise."

They pushed through a thick wall of greenery and Sai's eyes widened. Misaki grinned, "Ta da!!"

While Sai marvelled at the meadow of brightly coloured flowers, Misaki picked twigs and leaves from her hair, "Thought I'd show ya, since it's in full bloom. It's my back garden, but you can come here whenever you want."

Sai turned his head and stared at the girl, "Why would you be so nice to me?"

Misaki blinked, and her cheeks started to warm, "Er, because, well, I sort of, maybe- oh look, a hummingbird!"

Misaki rushed to the invisible creature, cursing herself. Sai blinked at her in confusion, then sat down in amidst the flowers and searched one out to draw. His eyes caught on one in particular for a moment, and then he started to draw it.

He became aware after a moment of the person leaning over his shoulder, watching him work. Misaki sighed.

"It's so unfair... I couldn't draw a potato even if I stared at it for a whole hour. And yet here you are, doing it like it's nothing!" she exclaimed, then looked at the violet coloured flower in confusion. "Why'd you decide to draw that one? There's loads that are much prettier."

Sai shrugged, "It caught my eye. And I think it's the prettiest one I've seen."

Misaki laid down on her stomach, staring at the flower, then blew some of her hair out of her face in irritation. She then stopped. "Sai-kun?"

"Mm?"

"This flower's the same colour as my hair."

"Mm."

Misaki just gazed blankly ahead, the slightest of blushes rising to her cheeks as she put the pieces together.

Sai-kun thought she was pretty.
