4 Years Later...
Well, needless to say it took me longer to finish my Getting Out of Fuchsia rewrite than I thought. What happened? Well, the pandemic, but maybe not for the reasons you might have thought.
I never got Covid. I never had any family or friends really suffer at the hands of it either. I certainly didn't lose anyone. I was in about the best position you could be in: a single computer programmer whose workplace already had systems in place to allow people to work remotely. At the height of the pandemic, I stayed in my apartment with my cat and left once a week to buy food.
Looking back at the revision dates on my chapters, it seems I was posting Getting Out of Fuchsia chapters well into 2020. But I had written all those in advance. My plan had been to write the whole thing before I posted any of it. And when I had all but the last chapter, I thought, well, surely I'll write that by the time I'm done with my once-a-week postings of all these other ones. I didn't.
I got used to isolation, and as I did, the type of writing I wanted to work on changed. I picked up one of my original novel ideas, which I'd been working on in college. I dusted it off, started a rewrite, and ended up pouring all my time and energy into it. Even now, with a completed draft that I'm taking a break from while I get feedback, it's been a bit of a struggle for me to return to Fuchsia and give you the ending I promised. I'm not even sure how many of you are still left, but the unkept promise had niggled in the back of my head from time to time. I didn't like leaving it unfinished.
So here's the ending. I plan to leave it up on Wattpad for two weeks, after which it will only be available on AO3. I ended up doing some edits to all the previous chapters while reminding myself of the finer points of the story, so feel free to start from the beginning if you'd like.
Will I be coming back to Wattpad? No. Will I be rewriting the sequel? Well, I won't say no, but I will say it'll only happen if it feels good to work on it. I'll also say that it will be on AO3 exclusively if it ever happens. As for reviews, I'm doing them for traditionally published books these days. And I'm critiquing the original fiction of writers who give me critiques of my work in exchange. I'm on a site where exchanging critiques is the entire point, which means everyone there is happy to get one.
If you want to join that site or read my book reviews or follow what I'm up to with my original fiction, you can message me for details. And I'll be checking comments below, at least for a little while.
See you around the internet. It's been real.
