fear & its ugly face
Z A Y N -
The talk with my dad left me visibly agitated. Not only that, but I kept thinking about how much fear his eyes contained. I had never seen him so shook up over anything, not even when election time rolled around.
I decided to leave through the back doors that would lead me right to the parking lot. I couldn't handle the cameras right now, not like this.
I saw a figure in the distance, but couldn't make out who it was since I didn't have my glasses on. They seemed to approach me and I stopped for a moment, waiting to make out their face.
"Hey, man," I rolled my eyes when I heard their voice.
Harry.
"Hey, what's up? How's it going?"
He was condescending and extremely unpleasant to be around. His father and mine had grown up together and apparently were best friends at some point, until they both decided to follow a similar path into politics. It all went downhill from there, or so my father says.
"What do you want, Harry? Isnt there a party or a keg you should be getting to?"
I half expected him to laugh, but he looked nervous as he noticed the cameras at the front gate.
"You know they're starting to interview people at the party, right?"
My skin must have paled, because Harry looked at me with some concern. "They're asking questions. Mina, you remember her? She said that they asked her if she knew about Elena being abused."
Now I panicked a little. I had to hide it. "That's crazy. I would never."
Harry raised a brow. "Look, no ones blaming you. But people are talking. Your neighbors have seen shit, apparently. Mrs. H went in today."
"How do you know all this? Why are you telling me? We've never gotten along so great." I didnt mean to sound ungrateful, but I probably came off like that.
He sighed and reached into his pocket. He pulled out his cigarettes and from that carton, a note.
"I know we haven't gotten along. My brother is still a cop, he's been telling me whats been going on. People from the party have been... talking."
"About?"
Now I was aware that he could be lying, but it all made sense. Of course they'd question people at the party. We were the last ones to see her.
"We all heard you fighting."
"Wasn't a fight, we were both drunk and just being difficult. It meant nothing."
"You threatened her, Zayn. The truth always shines in the end and you know someone is gonna talk."
