Harsh Hurts
This is not a rant, but I felt this needed to be said:
It's called constructive criticism for a reason people.
Definition: constructive criticism is the process of offering valid and well-reasoned opinions about the work of others, usually involving both positive and negative comments, in a friendly manner rather than an oppositional one. The purpose of 'constructive criticism is to improve the outcome.
Right? Everyone gets it now?
If you give a critique you do it in a friendly manner to HELP, not hurt or upset. That doesn't mean you need to be super bubbly and use a thousand emoticons. That doesn't help and isn't a professional critique. But you don't have to be rude and epically harsh to get your point across.
When you do that you only hurt the person's feelings and make them not want to continue writing or making graphics. Or whatever it is you're critiquing.
To brag that you're harsh to help people makes me want to run the opposite direction from your critiques. That isn't a help to anyone. You come off as rude and inconsiderate of the feelings' of others when you do that.
I do reviews of books on here (not on this account for reasons) I give long critiques. Sometimes several posts long. I'm nice and I let people know what I think can be improved and what I thought was very good about the book.
AND I GIVE REASONS for things. I don't say, "Hey this was bad."
It's more along the lines of, "Such-and-such paragraph doesn't flow well. The wording may be too straight forward and sort of dry. You might want to work on descriptive skills" And I usually take the paragraph and give it a small rewrite to show them how to use language more to their advantage. It isn't saying, your writing sucks do it this way. It is for explanatory purposes only so they can see how things can be rewritten to flow better. I respect the work they put into their book and my examples are never meant to be disrespectful.
I am still learning, every day, about writing. And everyone should continue to learn all of their lives. You will never, ever, know everything there is to know. I can pass on what I've learned as I've improved my writing and I can do it straight forward but in a friendly, helpful manner. I don't need to be harsh to help.
Harsh hurts. Let's all try not to hurt, but to encourage instead.
