Finding a Good Teacher
You dont have to enroll on writing classes just to learn how to write. Want to know my teacher? Experience.
I'm not talking about the experience in writing. I meant YOUR own personal experience in life. Have you experienced a heartbreak? Puppy love? Broken family? Betrayal? Graduation? Wedding? Birthdays? Tragedy? Or death by beloved family members? Everything you went through is meant to teach you something in your everyday life. If they tought you enough then why not use it on writing? It will give you a realistic idea that will make your story "believable". Your everyday life can be used in building your world.
If you haven't been inlove, would it be weird if you try to write romance stories without knowing anything about falling inlove? Same goes with everything I mentioned above. You will find it hard to write a scene when you haven't been there, haven't experience anything related to it. You cannot portray a role that you don't have any idea of.
I remember a Kdrama I watched recently, about an actress struggling to make a come back in acting. The actress had to take a three-month internship at a law firm for her to portray a role of a prosecutor. She became a secretary for a lawyer, she had to attend hearings with him, he made her observe a trial, get schedules, do a series of research for a case and she even go to a crime scene just to gather evidences and facts. Same goes for a writer, research is not enough. You have to see it for yourself, experience it. Take you readers to place where you want them to be. Let them feel the story, let them cry and laugh with your characters.
But for some writers, telling a story is never a as challenging as with others. There are some writers that can tell a story very well even though they haven't been there personally. Some of them can tell stories eventhough they only watched it somewhere else. There are also writers that learned from their mistakes and experiences. They were the ones that never gave up on their passion. They strive hard to achieve greatness. Learning is never an easy task.
Fantasy is a different story. You cannot experience it, right? But you can learn it from movies, TV series, and books. It involves mostly your wild imagination. But you can learn from experience too, like describing a town, a forest, an ocean, a bird or a dog, something minors like that.
In the end, it is up to you how you will write your stories. Wether from an experience or not, it is up to you to play with the words. Writing has no limit.
Found a good teacher, yet? Tell me in the comments. I would love to hear and learn from you guys.
