Legend of the Watermelon

Yesterday was opening night of my high school's first play of the year, A Streetcar Named Desire. It's a very dark, mature show, and while I am not the play's biggest fan, our cast has done a more than spectacular job with their roles.

The male lead, Stanley, has a recurring group of friends who appear to play card games with him. The actors playing these men are actual goofballs in real life. They're always pulling pranks on one another and joking around.

Last night as I was helping set out costumes for quick changes, two of these boys came backstage with a very suspicious backpack. As they rushed to their dressing rooms, they flashed my friends and I a glance of what was inside.

It was a very large watermelon.

We were confused.

Cue the first scene, when the group of boys enter stage left as they walk Stanley home. They were carrying the watermelon. From his place in the audience, the director made a confused noise. The leading lady did a good job of staying in character when she spotted the watermelon for the first time.

And so the watermelon kept on sneaking in multiple cameos. One of the poker players gave it to his wife as a gift. It was on the floor during a fight scene and almost got crushed. As the boys scrambled to gather their stuff to escape their very much drunk and angry friend, one of them yelled "SAVE THE WATERMELON", grabbed it, and took off running as fast as he could. He almost dropped it. That would have been bad. It was carted around for no reason throughout other scenes. In the final scene, it even got its own seat at the kitchen table. They brought it out for curtain call. They pulled a Circle of Life with it.

We do not know where those boys got the watermelon from. The booth crew were desperately searching through their scripts to find even a vague mention of the watermelon. The leading lady spent intermission looking for it backstage so that she could take it away from the boys. It could not be found in time for Act Two. Where was it hidden? We do not know. It is a mystery. The entire reasoning behind the watermelon is a mystery.
