Backup

Margaret and Charles had breakfast around 11 am. They ordered room service and just had a relaxing morning.

Their time at the hotel was coming to an end. Their bags were packed and they were showered, dressed and ready to go after breakfast.

Margaret couldn't help but feel bad that they were late on picking up Isaiah. Of all their times of having Isaiah staying over at Khaila's, they had never been late. Margaret just hoped that Isaiah would be okay with this sudden change.

Margaret loved this year's birthday celebration but she was ready to get back to her child.

After breakfast, they checkout of their hotel and were on their way to pick up Isaiah.

They drove back him and listened to some music and just talked about their night.

Soon, they were pulling up to Khaila and Eddie's house. Margaret got off of the car when Charles put the car in park.

She then walked to the front door and rang the doorbell. She waited a few seconds before the door opened.

Khaila opened the front door and smiled at Margaret. "Hello, Margaret. How was your night?"
"It was wonderful. I had a great time." Margaret replied. "But I missed my baby." She giggled.

Khaila smiled warmly back then opened the door wider to let her in.

"Isaiah, your mommy is here!" Khaila calls out.

They suddenly here running footsteps coming down the hall.

"Mommy, mommy!" Isaiah exclaims. He gives her hug and Margaret picks him up to carry him.
"My sweet boy! Did you have fun with Mama Khaila and Eddie?" Margaret asked.
"Yeah! I had tons of fun!" Isaiah said.
Margaret giggles then said as she puts him down. "I'm glad you had fun. Now, go get your things so we can go home."
"Okay, mommy!" Isaiah said as he runs off to get his bag.

Margaret then turns to Khaila and asks. "How was he? Did he do okay?"
"He did great. Although, when I told him you be a little late picking him up, he did get a little upset." Khaila said. "But Eddie managed to keep Isaiah preoccupied."
"That's good. I'm glad to hear that." Margaret said. "We didn't plan on being late but we ordered one bottle of wine too many." She chuckled.

Khaila laughed as Isaiah came running back.

"I'm ready mommy." Isaiah said.
"Alright, lets go." Margaret said. "Say bye to Mama Khaila."
"Bye, Mama Khaila!" Isaiah said as he hugged her tight. "I'll see you next time."

Khaila hugged him back and kissed the top of his head. "I'll see next time, Isaiah."

Soon, Margaret, Charles and Isaiah were on their way home. Isaiah told them all about his night, and morning with Khaila and Eddie.

Margaret was happy with how things turned out. When Khaila won custody of Isaiah, Margaret felt like her heart was ripped from out of her chest.

Now, she was just so grateful to Khaila for making the decision of letting her adopt Isaiah. Margaret felt her life was complete; she was happy, content and she had so much love for her family. She couldn't have asked for anything more.

*2 weeks later*

Things have gone back to normal for the Lewins family.

Margaret was on her lunch break at work one calm day. Nothing was happening much today so she decided to have a longer lunch than normal.

She grabbed a tray of food then sat down and began to eat. She ate a few bites of her food when a commotion could be heard throughout the hospital.

One of her coworkers rushed up to Margaret and said in a rush. "Margaret, it's David Martin! The five year old boy you've been treating. He's back and he's been beaten badly."

Margaret forgot all about her food and ran towards the E.R. Her heart raced and soon as she reached the E.R. she saw the poor boy lying on a stretcher as the doctors worked on him.

Margaret felt tears in her eyes and she saw this boys tiny body covered in bruises and blood. His eyes were swollen shut. But she still saw tears rolling down his little face. She could tell that he was in pain and was scared.

Margaret wanted to comfort the boy but she was soon distracted by more crying and yelling.

She turned around and saw David's parents talking to the police. Anger rose up inside her because she knew David's father had everything to do with this.

She knew David was in good hands so she rushed over to the father and the mother.

Finally the police seemed to be taking this seriously and were about to put the father into handcuffs.

Margaret didn't know what possessed her but once she got in front of the father, she pushed him with all her might.

"I knew you would do it again!" Margaret yelled. "David should be taken away from you! You don't deserve that little boy! He deserves so much better!"

Margaret never once in her career, confronted a parent like this. But it seemed that today was her breaking point.

"Why do you do it?! Huh!!!" Margaret continued.

"Mind your fucking business bitch!" David's father said with a slur to his voice.

David's mother could only stay seated in her seat afraid of what her husband could do next. She knew him well and was concerned for everyone around him.

"No! I am not going to mind my fucking business!" Margaret yelled. "You've been abusing David for months! Of course, you always get away with it. Not this time! I'm going to make sure you are put away so David doesn't have to be abused anymore."

All David's father did was laugh in her face.

"You bastard!" Margaret said as she drew closer to him. "What is it huh? What is it that makes you hit someone weaker and smaller than you? Does it make you feel more of man? Or do you have to hit someone and belittle them to make up for something you're lacking!?"

In that moment, after running out of steam, did Margaret feel fear.

David's father's face turned red. He was angry now and before anyone could stop him, he raised his hand to Margaret.

Margaret didn't feel it until she was on the ground. She grabbed the side of her face then turned to look up at the man towering over her.

The two police officers tried to restrain him but his anger and the alcohol coursing through his body made David's father stronger. They had to call for backup.

Margaret has tears rolling down her face. She stood up and backed away for a moment. She then saw the scene before her. The pain on the side of her face was prominent now.

The wife was trying to calm her husband down, but all he did was smack her. Once the police called for back up, they tried again to subdue him but he pushed them to ground and managed to grab one of the officers gun.

"Everyone back the fuck up!" David's father yelled and pointed the gun at everyone as he turned in a circle.

Margaret,  her coworkers and patients stood still. Everyone was terrified and some were crying. Hospital security ran up to the scene but stopped when they saw the gun.

David's father yelled things that didn't make sense. He was belligerent and no one could reason with him.

One officer stood up behind David's father and snuck up on him.

The officer grabbed the hand that was holding the gun and David's father fought for the gun. People ran away, some frozen to their spots.

Margaret was one of those who stood frozen, unable to move.

During the fight for the gun, a gun shot was heard. After that, the other officer and the security guard tackled David's father to ground. After a struggle, David's father was in handcuffs.

Margaret stood still with wide eyes, her breathing was steady at the moment. But suddenly, her vision grew blurry.

One of Margaret's coworkers that was next to her turned to Margaret and said worriedly. "Margaret?"

Margaret felt something on her shoulder. She brought her hand to her right shoulder. She pulled her hand away then looked down at it.

Blood covered her hand. It was then that she realized what had happened. She couldn't explain the pain. It was more of a numbness. Margaret turned to her coworker, and suddenly her vision went black.
