Chapter 9 (edited)
Victor trudged to the living room with a full Yuki in one arm and an empty tray in the other, Mari sat at the living room quietly talking to Minako who had immediately rushed over as soon as she heard the news.
As soon as she laid eyes on Victor she squealed and ran over to him cooing at his son. "Look at you you're so adorable!" She exclaimed with wide happy eyes, she seemed to be in a good mood, despite the current situation Victor wondered what it was that kept her so happy. He wished he could be as happy as her in situations like these. "May I hold him?" She asked pleadingly. "Of course." Victor smiled and handed his son over to the excited woman.
Minako cooed at the infant and made many funny faces until eventually, Yuki began to laugh, Victor smiled even more and went to the kitchen where Hiroko was already getting breakfast done for Minako. "Oh, hello Victor did you sleep well?" She asked curiously. "Yes, thank you for the meal." He said and washed his dishes. "Ah..the rest of us were thinking about going to see Yuuri." Hiroko quietly stated. "Oh?" Victor forced a smile. "I think that's a great idea." He turned off the sink and put his dishes up.
"Would you come with us?" She asked reluctantly, Victor froze, would he be able to face Yuuri again? He sighed and allowed his smile to falter. "I..." he paused and took a breath. "Do you think that if I go it'll help?" He asked. "He should be with close family members like you and Mari," he stated. "Victor Katsuki Nikiforov." Hiroko crossed her arms. "You and Yuki are Yuuri's family, you have his last name, you have the ring, my goodness you have the baby to prove it!" She exclaimed.
Victor looked down at his hand, the one where his ring glittered in the light, he gave a glum smile. "You're right," he mumbled. "But after all these years we've been through how can he just forget?" He looked up at Hiroko who set the dishes of food on a tray. "..he didn't even want to hold Yuki, his own child!" Victor knew that it wasn't Yuuri's fault for forgetting, but with all the stress, anger, sadness, and despair it was too much to handle all at once.
Hiroko frowned and patted his shoulder as if telling him to calm down. "Take deep breaths, Victor, you need to calm yourself." She instructed with a smooth calming tone in her voice, Victor did as told and slumped his shoulders. "I'm sorry," his voice was suddenly hoarse. "I just.." he sighed not even knowing the reason for his outburst, it was rare for him to yell, yet Hiroko was unfazed. "You just need to blow off some steam." She said. "yeah..." Victor mumbled. "Oh!" Hiroko gasped. "Why don't you go to the skating rink after we go see Yuuri?" She suggested.
Victor frowned trying to remember the last time he skated on the ice, he took a temporary leave after his and Yuuri's marriage, and when Yuki was born he stayed away even longer "I...do you think it'll be empty today?" He asked curiously. "It's the weekend so it'll probably be empty today, I'll give Yuuko a call to ask," Hiroko promised. "Thank you," Victor sighed, Hiroko was doing many things for Victor it worried him. Hiroko was doing so much for him, deep down he knew didn't deserve her kindness but he was glad that she was still there keeping him from going under.
He helped Hiroko serve Mianko and grabbed his son so that the woman could enjoy her meal. "Yuki is so mature Victor, he never pushes me away when I smother him." Minako giggled. "Ah...is that so?" Victor chuckled nervously and patted his son's back as if to apologize. "And he's never fussy, he's always happy." She stuffed her mouth with food. "Well not always," Victor mumbled taking a look at Yuki who pressed himself against him, Yuki squealed and buried his face in Victor's shirt taking fistfuls of it. It looked like he was giving his father a tight hug.
Victor laughed and stroked his son's hair, he absolutely adored Yuki's soft hair. "He's in a happy mood because I fed him." Victor joked. "Well, that's also because Mrs.Katsuki makes delicious food!" Minako exclaimed with a full mouth. "Of course." Victor smiled. Yuki looked up at his father and smiled letting out a loud. "Paa!" Startling both Victor and Minako. "He just said pa, That's so cute!" Minako squealed. "He's been calling me that for some time now, I'm really happy..." Victor brought his son up to his face and kissed his cheek.
Yuki giggled and placed his tiny hands on Victor's lips. "You wound me, my son," Victor chuckled and gave Yuki a hug. "But I still love you." He stated. "Victor, Mari we'll be leaving soon so please get ready," Hiroko called out from the kitchen, Victor felt his heart drop, he immediately felt sick.
Was he ready to face Yuuri again?
Definitely not.
But was he going to try again anyway?
You bet.
Victor swallowed the lump in his throat and returned to his room excusing himself, he sat Yuki on the bed leaning him against a wall of pillows. "Let's see." Victor grabbed the suitcase that sat on the ground against the bed and plopped it in front of Yuki who gazed at Victor longingly. Victor opened the suitcase and searched throughout Yuki's many outfits if Yuuri didn't remember then Victor was going to make sure Yuki won over his heart. "We're going to see mommy again Yuki," Victor explained to his son as he took out multiple outfits.
He hummed in thought as he lied them on the bed, Yuki leaned forward and fell to his hands and knees looking like he was about to crawl, with trembling arms he slowly crawled over to Victor, his head leaned forward threatening fall, but Yuki held his head up and giggled as he crawled over the clothes and reached for his father who watched him with wide eyes. When he accomplished his crawl he tried lifting himself up by grabbing onto Victor's clothes, Victor was speechless, to say the least, Yuki was growing so fast and learning so many new things.
He smiled at his son and lifted him up giving him various kisses and hugging him every now and then all the while telling Yuki how proud he was of him, but the little congratulations party had to be cut short, Victor chose a light blue long sleeved shirt that had a puppy on it and a pair of white and blue striped pants, along with that were blue socks, and finally the thing that completed the adorable outfit, an adorable puppy hat. He placed Yuki on the bed again and undressed him, the infant instantly trembled and pouted. "I'm sorry!" Victor apologized and quickly dressed him up.
As soon as Yuki was dressed Victor couldn't stop himself from cooing over his adorable son, there was a knock at the door. "You guys ready yet? We're already about to leave." Mari said from the other side of the closed door. "We'll be right there!" Victor quickly changed into a plain light blue sweater to match with Yuki and a pair of dark jeans, he slipped on his shoes and put on comfortable shoes for Yuki, he grabbed his son and hurried out of his room waving to Minako who was already opening a bottle of soju.
Outside Victor was met with Yuuri's family, all together they smiled at Victor and Yuki. "Are you ready?" Hiroko asked. "Always," Victor replied with a nod of his head. "If it's too much you can always walk out the room and take a breather." Toshiya, Yuuri's father, said giving Victor a pat on the back. "Yes, thank you." Victor smiled. They had already set the car seat for Yuki in the back seat, climbing into the car Toshiya sat at the driver's side, Hiroko on the passenger's seat, Victor and Mari sat each side of the car seat. Mari on the left, Victor on the right, and Yuki in the car seat.
Together the family drove off to the hospital where they hoped Yuuri was healthy, and hopefully, he would remember.
--------------------------
Victor wasn't ready to get out of the car, the ride seemed like it lasted only seconds, Hiroko climbed out and opened Victor's door giving him some air. "There's no need to rush this, you can go in when you're ready okay? We'll meet you in Yuuri's room." She rubbed Victor's back in an attempt to calm him, Victor didn't say anything, he just nodded. The trio left Victor along with Yuki, all of them already knowing that Yuki was the only one that could calm Victor down.
Yuki looked at his father and reached out for him, his tiny hands shaking. "Pa!" Yuki yelled, Victor jumped and faced his son letting out a shaky laugh. "You startled me." He said and unbuckled Yuki from the car seat, he lifted Yuki out and held him. "I'm not really sure what's going to happen now, but I really want to help Yuuri regain his memories. Not only for me but for you Yuki. I don't care if he hates he I just want him to love you like he used to." Victor remembered when Yuuri used to hold Yuki and kiss his cheek.
He remembered when he would put Yuki to sleep and frown stating that he already missed the baby gurgles, and when they would go out Yuki would fall asleep and Yuuri became the world's scariest librarian shushing everyone around them, Victor chuckled to himself as he remembered Yuuri saying. "Okay, he just fell asleep, if anyone wakes my baby up I will shoot them." He had sounded so scary, so serious.
Yuki smiled as Victor laughed he patted his chest and giggled. "I'm going to bring those happy memories back I promise Yuki, you'll be even happier." Victor gathered his courage and climbed out of the car closing the door behind him. When he walked into the building he could already feel his throat tightening with fear, but he swallowed thickly and made his way to Yuuri's room which took quite a while, mostly because Victor felt his legs grow heavy they felt like they had become lead. He stopped right in front of the door still debating on whether or not to enter, he didn't want to ruin the family reunion, but he and Yuki were family too.
"I can do this," Victor mumbled and looked down at Yuki who had seemed to remember the place and pressed himself against his father's chest, his face filled with fear. "It's okay." Victor rubbed Yuki's back. "No one is going to hurt you." With that Victor entered the room, he immediately stopped dead in his tracks his eyes going wide, his heart dropped down to his stomach and his blood turned to ice slush, he immediately held Yuki tighter and closer to his chest. "W-what are you doing here?" He took a staggering step back.
There Angela sat on the hospital bed with Yuuri, they both held hands, it made Victor upset, and very confused. "You're Victor, right? I understand that you're my wife's friend, but your visit earlier was really surprising. Though she told me you're a very good prankster so you really got me." Yuuri laughed, Victor couldn't believe it. "W-wife?" He stuttered. "Yes, Angela here is my wife." Yuuri smiled at Angela looking at her like she was the light of his life.
It hurt Victor deeply, Yuki had recognized the man sitting on the hospital bed, his voice was so familiar, his smell comforting and very familiar as well. It has said that babies can recognize the smell of their mother and tell the difference in the mother and other people, Yuki had grown fond of his father's scent, but Yuuri's was one that was new yet very familiar. Yuki turned to look at Yuuri and whimpered when he caught sight of the woman beside him, even a baby could tell that Angela was definitely not a good person.
Victor was trembling now. "The ring," he whispered. "Yuuri do you have a ring?" He asked anxiously, Yuuri frowned. "A ring?" He asked and lifted both his hands up, Victor nearly cried when he saw that his hands were bare, no ring was in sight. Angela sighed. "We were going to get rings, but after your accident, I had to give everything up for you," Angela explained. "Really? I'm sorry." Yuuri apologized. "I promise as soon as I'm let out I'll get a job and buy us rings. I promise." Surely this was a nightmare, Victor thought to himself.
"Yuuri, please! You're not married to her, we're both married." He took a step forward, and then another. "Please don't do this Yuuri, I know you're still there deep inside. Please come back." His voice broke. "Please..." Yuuri looked frightened he wrapped a protective arm around Angela. "You're still going on with that?" He asked.
He sighed and shook his head. "Victor...." he faced him. "Angela is my wife. So please, stop saying that we're both married."
