46| READING A DEMON APP + REGROUPING

[ Chapter Forty-Six ]

Zari ended up leading them to a house after they successfully portaled away from Palmer X. Myra and Charlie had no idea whose house it was or what they were doing there, but they figured that Zari would have enough common sense to not lead them into another trap.

Zari opened up a window and the three climbed through it and into a kitchen, "Trust me, we'll be safe here."

"Where are we?" Charlie asked.

"My childhood home." Zari answered.

Myra and Charlie raised their eyebrows.

"I though you grew up in a dystopian city, Z." Charlie said and looked at the backyard, "You had a pool?"

"In a couple years, A.R.G.U.S. will use people's growing fear of meta-humans to seize control. Of course, it didn't help that we were Muslim. We were forced to move to a ghetto district in 2021." Zari explained, though Myra had already heard the story.

"Humans are so easy to manipulate." Charlie said, "I mean you just show them a scary ogre or a dangerous meta, they just go barmy."

"Haven't even been able to get into the Eyes app yet because the terms of service are so long." Zari complained, pulling out her phone.

"No one bothers reading those." Charlie answered.

"It's literally an app created by Neron. She better read those." Myra said.

Zari nodded, "Yeah it's a demon app. I'm gonna read the fine print."

"I can't believe it's just us left." Charlie sighed, "I mean we knew from the start it was madness to storm the Bureau."

"I mean we didn't actually storm the Bureau but you're right." Myra said, leaning against the sofa next to Charlie.

"Oh, my God." Zari exclaimed.

"What's wrong?" Myra asked.

"Z?" Charlie asked, and moved over to Zari's side, Myra quickly following.

"In New Orleans, John said Neron needed more souls to take over hell." Zari explained, "Here it says in exchange for the service, the user agrees to forefeit their eternal soul to the demon Neron."

"What the hell?" Myra exclaimed.

"What, you're saying that anyone who downloads the app is going to hell?" Charlie asked.

"Yeah." Zari nodded.

"Oh that is mental." Charlie shook her head.

"Okay what are we going to do?" Myra crossed her arms, "We can't just let Neron send hundreds of people to hell just for downloading some dumb app."

Sara's voice came over their comms right then, "Hey, Z, Myra, Charlie, please tell me you have something."

"Well, we figured out Neron's app is a way to collect souls." Zari answered.

"That's crazy." Sara responded.

"Yeah, it gets crazier. To drum up fear and increase downloads of his app, we think he may be planning a monster attack." Zari answered.

"Okay, well, we'll stall Gary, but you got to get every single one of those monsters out of the Time Bureau." Sara instructed.

"I was afraid you were gonna say that." Charlie said.

"Guess we're going to the Bureau after all." Myra sighed.

Charlie was definitely not into the plan that Zari and Myra attempted to come up with.

"Charlie, I get that you're scared but the team is counting on us." Zari said.

"I'm not scared, it's just breaking the monsters out of prison is a multiple person job." Charlie stated.

"You can be multiple people." Zari commented.

"Look, Z, yeah, I can, for a second and you know what it takes its toll." Charlie said, "Now I can end up back in person or even worse, dead."

"Charlie, we're not going to let you die." Myra interrupted.

"When A.R.G.U.S. came for my family, my brother Behrad told me to run. And I did. I've never forgiven myself." Zari stated, "You won't either. We can't change my family's future, but we can change their present."

Myra sighed, "I lost a sister because I was being selfish and I spent years after that feeling awful that I'm alive and she isn't. In fact, if I'm being honest, I still do. If we don't do this it will be another thing for us all to feel guilty about and I don't know about you but I won't forgive myself if we don't at least try."

A door opens somewhere in the house right then and they hear a voice "Zari Jaan, make sure to take your shoes off before you go in."

"Charlie?" Zari looks at her.

Charlie sighs, "If I die, I'm gonna come back and haunt you." Charlie turns to Myra, "And you too."

Myra shrugged, "I honestly wouldn't mind that."

Zari smirked, "I would love a ghost friend."

The three women smiled at each other before quickly opening the door to the backyard and leaving before Zari's family could catch them in their house.
