Ch. 62
Rachel's cheeks flush noticing the condoms. Quickly, her eyes slip past them, and she tries to focus back on looking for the cold medicine her mom asked her to get.
It's not like Hector and her have never talked about sex. More like he had suggested it a few times whenever they got a little too carried away on bed. But she always was too embarrassed to take it further.
She doesn't know why.
It's not like there is any part of her he hasn't already seen, kissed, or groped. She isn't shy to get naked with him. But, sex... Rachel stops walking and sighs.
She knows why.
She's scared it might hurt, and that she might disappoint him if she ends up acting like she's in pain instead of like she's enjoying it.
It's probably overthinking, Rachel thinks as she resumes her walk. Women have sex. It happens. It's not like all the girls are walking around in pain, are they?
Rachel stops again, wanting to bump her head against the aisle. Sometimes she wishes she could be like one of those carefree, freaky girls who love to try everything, instead of being a wary prude who has to summon up some courage to have sex with her own, incredibly hot, boyfriend.
Ah, she had found the medicine.
After paying for everything, on the way out, Rachel sees Sarah and her friends walk past her into the store. Sarah, the popular cheerleader from Rachel's school. The one who tried to spread a rumor that she was going to the school dance with Hector.
Although Sarah might've been disgraceful at times, she's surely someone who's gutsy enough to not let the fear of a little pain stop her from having sex. Especially if it was with Hector, since Sarah had always tried to get him to date her. Hold on...
A thought crosses Rachel's mind. Did Hector ever sleep with her?
Rachel shakes her head. No. No. Let's not go down that rabbit hole.
The imagery, however, is stuck in her mind, which makes it all the more worse. Should she ask him? But why does it matter? Even if anything happened between those two, that would be in the past. Now Hector is going out with her. She needn't worry, except... no one knows Hector is seeing her.
The spiral gets deeper, darker, and dizzier. Rachel thrusts the grocery bags into the trunk, and slams it shut. Better not mull over this anymore.
As she goes over to the driver's side to open the door, she sees a familiar face cross the road towards her. "Hey," Ricky says.
"Hey."
"Came to the store?"
"Had to grab some things for mom."
"Great. By the way, can we talk?"
"Sure, what is it?" She asks. Ricky looks a little serious.
"That woman in front of your house that day, that was Hector's mom, wasn't it?"
Rachel looks as if she was caught in a lie. Which she was. "I-I don't know. She was just asking for dire—"
"Rachel stop. I know she wasn't asking for directions. Something else happened. You looked scared. Why would his mom would even know you though? I mean... didn't you tell me our break up had nothing to do with him?"
Rachel feels like a quicksand is pulling her down. "Ricky, I really don't know who that woman was, and I'd already told you why I broke up with you. Besides, even if there's anything between me and Hector, that doesn't concern you."
Ricky smiles. "Why so defensive? It's not like I asked anything wrong."
"It's getting late for me. I've to go," Rachel says, turning around. Ricky grabs her arm and turns her back to him. "Now, now, Rachel, don't get mad. I was just worried about you. If someone threatens you, I don't like that. I'm gonna find the truth and keep you safe," he says and lets her arm go, "because that's what guys who truly likes a girl does for her."
Without a word, Rachel gets into her car quickly and drives away. "Shit." She slams the car's steering wheel. She's in trouble.
