Ch. 59
Rachel smiles when they pull over at the drive-in theater. She rode with him on his bike the last time they visited and saw The Breakfast Club. She still feels giddy about that day. Hector glances at her. Seeing her smile, he smiles, too. He had been hoping for the day he could do this again with Rachel. He flips on the car's radio and tunes it to the theater's audio frequency.
"I'll get us some snacks. What do you want?" Hector says.
"Popcorn and coke."
The Roman Holiday starts rolling on the big screen soon after he's back with the refreshments.
"Can I ask you something?" Rachel says, a few minutes into the movie.
"Anything."
"How's everything with your mother?"
"I won't say good. But I can manage."
"Did your mom..." Rachel trails off, looking slightly guilty.
"It wasn't her. A bike accident fractured my arm."
"You weren't careful?"
"A lot was on my mind. Even tried boxing before. Didn't work out."
Rachel stares down at her fingers.
"It's not because of us," Hector lies.
She doesn't answer.
Hector inches to her and leans in closer. "Rachel."
Her eyes look up.
"Can I kiss you?" He asks.
Shyness makes her look away. He kisses her cheek. She bites her lips. "Look at me," he whispers.
With shaky breath, she turns to face him. His thumb gently traces her chin as he leans in further close.
She allows him to deepen their kiss by moving back while his chest covers hers. When his hand slides down her body, Rachel moans into his kiss. The other hand grabs the lever and pushes her seat back. He bends down further, not letting go of her lips. His neck hurts. They should've been at the backseat. But he can't stop. His lips shift to the nape of her neck. Rachel arches up, clutching his shirt. When one of his hands reach her thigh, Rachel gasps and brings up her arms between them.
"Sorry," he says, breathless.
"It's okay," she says, "just not yet." Around his neck, Rachel wraps her arms, and pulls him down for another kiss.
They miss most of the movie. Eventually, the two separate, mostly because it was hurting their backs. Hector reminds himself again to take the backseat next time. Rachel fixes her hair and dress.
"When do we do this again?" Hector says.
"We just barely finished."
He kisses her. "And I want to start again."
Chuckling, she softly pushes him away. "Next weekend."
Hector looks ahead as his smile disappears. The closing credits are rolling on the screen. "So we can't meet at school?"
"You promised," Rachel says. Even if she had broken up with Ricky, it doesn't seem right she's with Hector soon after. It's better Ricky doesn't know yet.
"I know," Hector says, and he intends to keep that promise. It's just he wants to stay with her as long as possible. There's a way. "The house hunting," he says, "you still have to help me with it."
"You plan on going through with that?" Rachel says. It took a long time to convince him to move out of his place, away from his abusive mother. But after the two of them stopped talking, Rachel was worried he might've changed his mind.
"Yes, I better move out soon," he says, starting the car, "I need a place of my own so I can make out with my girlfriend, uninterrupted."
