Ch. 51
He didn't think. He just did it. He pushed Ricky away from Rachel with a punch to his face.
"Hector!" Rachel says, grabbing his arm that he effortlessly pulls free from her grasp. She feels it was more than his hand that left her.
Both Ricky's and Hector's friends were quick to break the fight before something worse happened. But damages beyond they can see are already done.
Rachel's chest aches at the sight before her. Hector's friends shout at him to leave, but it's like he can't hear them.
Vince turns to Rachel. "You leave first." She shakes her head. He repeats, "You leave first, or they won't leave."
Moira and Annie take Rachel away to Moira's car. At the passenger seat, Rachel begins to cry, while her friends exchange glances helplessly.
They know it wasn't her fault. But she won't understand it yet.
In the evening she receives a text from Ricky, apologizing for his behavior and for taking it further by fighting back with Hector. But he's not sorry for his feelings for her. He wants a chance to talk with her properly.
Rachel replies with an apology, too, and assures him they will talk soon enough. She isn't offended by his kiss, or his affection. But she feels she doesn't deserve it given her own unsure feelings about Hector.
She keeps picking up her phone wanting to call Hector, only to put it back down each time.
Eventually she gets tired from the pacing, and way past midnight, she lies down.
Her phone rings. She takes it quickly before the ringing wakes up her parents.
It's Hector.
"Why did you do that?" He says. Her heart breaks. "It wasn't like that," she says.
"Then what was it like?" He shouts, and she realizes his voice is also coming from her window. She goes over and looks outside.
He's by the street, looking up at her. Rachel's lips tremble. Even from this far she could see his angry and painful expression.
Rachel ends the call, and cautiously sneaks out of the house through the front door. She takes him to the small park across the street from where her parents won't be able to hear them.
"I didn't think he would do something like that. I was surprised, too."
"Then why didn't you push him away?"
"I— I guess, I didn't want to hurt h—"
"His feelings? You would go as far as to let him kiss you to not hurt his feelings? Then what about me? You didn't waste any time pushing me away when I kissed you."
"It's not the same! He's a friend. And you— you," Rachel stammers in anger, "you've been nothing but undecided about everything."
"Like what?!"
"Everything! Your mom, dad, us! I mean, I don't understand why you even got upset before. Are we even friends? You are sweet and kind one day to me, and the next day you give me the cold shoulder. I can't keep up with this!"
"I see," Hector says, "I should've known better then. People leave when it gets tough, you're no different."
"I'm not your dad," Rachel says, "I tried to be there for you no matter what, but when you do things like you did today, when you don't trust me, or when you act like I owe you anything, it hurts me. You know what, I may not be like your dad, but you sure are more like your mother than you think."
That was the final straw. Nothing further had to be said. It couldn't get any worse.
They leave their separate ways.
