Ch. 47

This is what she'd asked him to do. But he would do it like this? That she didn't know.

"We're here," the realtor, Linda, says.

The three of them stand in the middle of the empty and impressively spacious living room.

"East facing," Linda says, standing near the floor to ceiling windows, "you'll get plenty of morning light."

The tour takes them through kitchen, three bedrooms, two closet rooms, and a pool room. And end up back in the living space.

"So?" Linda says.

Hector looks at Rachel. Rachel opens her mouth, then closes it.

"Give us a second," Hector says to the realtor.

"Of course. If you need me, I'll be in the kitchen."

Hector walks over to Rachel who's standing by the windows. "So?" He says.

Rachel laughs. "Don't you think this is a little... too much for one person? How many rooms your home has?"

Hector begins to count in his mind.

"Never mind," Rachel says, "If you like this place, it's perfect."

"What about you?"

"I think it's nice. Spacious. Bright. Nice location."

Hector nods.

After the woman comes back, Hector tells her, "Let's keep looking. Schedule something next weekend."

The woman nods diligently.

After they come down, Rachel tells him, "You don't like it?"

"You said it was too big for me."

"Yeah, but, isn't your home big too?"

"I'll try something smaller this time. Let's see if the next one works out."

Rachel stops walking. "You want me to come with you again?"

"This is your idea," he says, opening the car door for her. She gets in. He gets in.

"It's not like I had this idea first," Rachel says as they pull out of the parking.

"But you are the one who convinced me to move out."

Rachel chuckles. "You're just taking revenge on me for making you do this."

"That, too," he says.

After they turn a corner, Hector says, "So you're going to the dance with Ricky?"

"Yeah," Rachel says, and nothing else.

He could feel her hesitation. Palpable. "You told your parents about what you want to choose in college?" He asks.

That's something Rachel can talk about. Wants to talk about. "I'm going to tell them this weekend," she nervously says. The memories of arguments between her parents and older sister, Agatha, when she told them she was ditching law school to work in films aren't good.

Physics is not a bad choice. But how does that compare to law? For her parents.

"They'll be happy about it. And even in the chance they get upset over it, they'll come around soon," Hector says.

"What makes you say that?"

"Personal experience."

Rachel is about to ask him if he's talking about his parents when he says, "I can never stay mad at you for long."

Rachel smiles at his reasoning.

The definition of their relationship still hangs in the air. Both of them are afraid to bring it up. But these past few days they have settled into a comfortable discomfort of appreciating one another without sharing further. And most importantly, avoiding talking about the kiss.
