Chaeyoung was able to muster up a sweet smile despite her sadness over leaving behind the precious people who'd been there all her life. Until it was time for her to say her goodbye.
She hugged her parents briefly, her father patting her head and gave her encouragements, her mother planting a small kiss on her cheek after the hug before giving her similar words of encouragements. When she moved to Jimin, she broke down in tears, hugging him tightly and she was sure that her brother's shirt soaked so much when he hugged her back as tight as she did to him.
"I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm going to miss you," she said through her sobs, whining when Jimin laughed at her teasingly.
Her brother ruffled her hair before smoothing them down, patting her damp cheeks and wiped off her tears. "Come on, now. Stop crying. You don't want to arrive there looking all ugly with puffy red eyes."
"Shut up," she scoffed but laughed when she saw her brother's eye smile.
"Remember," JImin said after a while, "don't entertain any guys. They might just want to take advantage of you."
"Yeah, yeah."
"I'm serious," Jimin narrowed his eyes at her. "If anyone bothers you, tell them to back off or they'll have to face your brother. Get me?"
"Yeah, yeah."
"Don't just yeah, yeah me, kid. I won't be there to protect you."
"She's all grown up, Jimin. I'm sure she can handle things on her own," their mother said calmly. "She's no longer a baby you need to protect."
Jimin's face turned even more serious as he muttered. "What do you guys know? You never cared to protect her all this time."
"Hey," Chaeyoung quickly said before any of her parents could hear or retort him. The last thing she wanted was for them to fight because of her. "I'll be fine."
"I know you'll be fine. I just –"
"Yeah, I'll keep you up-to-date with everything," she chuckled. "From the things that I eat to the people that I'm friends with to the list of my possible enemies, I'll tell them all to you, gossiper."
"You brat," Jimin laughed, playfully trying to hit her head but messed her hair instead.
She hugged him one last time before moving to her cousin, Chanyeol. He told her to take great care of herself and be extra careful in a new place and whispered to her that while doing all that, she shouldn't stop herself from getting all the fun since Jimin wouldn't be around to monitor her, and they high-fived after that. She shed her tears again as she hugged her friends, Lisa, Jisoo and Jennie. They made promises to always keep in touch.
Chaeyoung scrunched her face, though, when Lisa told her that she had a secret to tell that she'd wanted to tell to only Chaeyoung but hadn't had the chance until that day. It was simply a secret that she already knew, that Lisa and Hoseok were an item and that they'd made it official with one activity that 'shouldn't be said out loud'.
When she moved on to the next persons, she could only smile sadly at them. Jungkook's mother hugged her long enough that she almost decided to cancel the flight because that motherly hug was something she never got to experience much. The older female rubbed her back lovingly, and Chaeyoung's lips trembled when Jungkook's mother tried to hide her own tears with a small smile. His father gave her a brief hug and a pat on her head, telling her that it was going to be fine and that she'd be happy in a new place. She wished she could argue with him over that.
And finally, when she moved to the next person, the last person standing in line, her teeth chewed on her lip so hard that she thought it would bleed anytime soon.
"Is he really not coming?" she asked, her voice shaky, the tears welling up in her eyes fell down quickly.
Junghyun looked at her long, sighing before he smiled at her a small smile. A smile that she'd describe as 'I'm sorry, there's nothing that I can do about it' kind of smile. Chaeyoung nodded, her lips trembling and she looked down quickly, roughly wiping her face with the back of her hand before she looked up at Jungkook's brother.
Her hand reached to the necklace she was wearing and as hard as it was for her, she didn't think keeping it with her would ease her worry. Perhaps, Jimin was right. Maybe he did end things between them. And Jungkook probably thought of wanting the best for the both of them. She knew him. He wouldn't want to hurt her. And that was probably why he made it all quietly because words would kill her.
Chaeyoung took off the necklace and fisted it for a moment before pushing her hand forward. "Can you please give this to him?" she asked with her still blurry eyes.
Junghyun gazed at her hand that was holding the necklace before he shook his head and pushed her hand gently. "I think he would want you to keep it, Chaeyoung."
Despite her mind constantly telling her to insist on giving it back to Jungkook, her heart was stronger. It wanted that necklace to stay with her. And she had promised him. With a soft sigh, she retracted her hand, holding to it tighter before she slipped it into the pocket of her jeans.
The flight felt awfully long, and despite being exhausted, she couldn't fall asleep. She was literally dragging her feet to retrieve her luggage, thinking of grabbing a taxi to bring her to the destination she was supposed to be.
There weren't that many people in the airport, which she was thankful for. The last thing she wanted to handle was to walk in a big crowd to find her way out because she would definitely get lost.
Chaeyoung pushed her trolley with heavy steps as she looked around. She didn't even know why she did so as though someone she knew would fetch her or that her parents would make someone they knew help her with everything there. They certainly made it clear that she'd be totally independent once stepping into a new place, a new world.
While she was totally independent and could survive well wherever she would be placed in, this wasn't a choice she made for herself.
Her eyes were just lazily wandering around, briefly sparing glances to strangers until she met eyes with a pair of eyes that she was familiar with.
In fact, she was more than familiar with that pair of eyes staring at her.
Everything seemed to freeze right at that moment, though she felt her eyes were about to drop fat tears, her heart was the opposite of calm and her nails dug into her own palm, trying to wake her up if this was just a dream.
When her voice came out, it cracked so bad that if Jimin heard it, he'd tease her all day and night.
"Jungk –Jung –"
Jungkook was standing about twenty steps away from her, he was gazing at her with a smile so wide that his eyes crinkled and Chaeyoung's attempt to hold her ugly sob was a failed attempt when Jungkook spread his arms wide.
Without a second thought, Chaeyoung left her trolley behind as she dashed toward him, throwing her arms around him and strongly held onto him as though she was going to witness him being taken away from her. Jungkook's strong arms wrapped around her body, lifting her off the floor, spinning around briefly and she could feel him taking the deepest breath as he buried his face into her shoulder while doing so.
When he put her down, Chaeyoung slightly stepped backward, her hands stayed rooted on his shoulder as she eyed him, inspecting every part of his smiling face before she cupped his face and pulled him close, covering his mouth with hers.
She had so many questions bubbling in her throat, waiting to be asked. Her hands roamed around his chest, still trying to check if this was all real.
"Why are you here?" she asked while inching closer toward him.
Jungkook placed a palm on the small of her back, tilted his head with a quirk of his brow. "Aren't you happy to see me here?"
Her lips formed a small pout as she slowly leaned her face closer to his and pecked his lips for a few times. "Are you kidding?"
He chuckled softly, the sound was smooth and beautiful.
"You said you'd come to the airport to see me," she whined with a pout.
Jungkook hummed briefly while turning his head left and right, looking everywhere as he slightly stepped away from her. "This is an airport too, isn't it?" he replied.
"Yeah, but..." she trailed off, her eyes slowly blinked as she thought of the current situation.
"Well, I don't want to come to the airport to say goodbye to my girl," Jungkook said while looking straight into her eyes. "If I'm about to see her at the airport, it would be to welcome her instead of bidding her farewell."
Chaeyoung sent a long gaze at him, her brain trying to process what he'd just said. What could that possibly mean? Could her parents ask him to come here to fetch her?
"What do you...?" she licked her lips briefly, her heart made a weird thump. "What do you mean?"
She watched as Jungkook slowly took her hands in his and pulled her closer before one of his hands went up to her face to tuck her hair to behind her ear, his fingers caressing the side of her face gently and Chaeyoung couldn't stop staring at his beautiful eyes as she waited for whatever it was that he was going to say.
"I'm really sorry for ignoring you for weeks." Jungkook's hand on her waist travelled to her back, rubbing it slowly. "I wish there was a different way to do it, but I honestly couldn't think of a better way to make it work."
"To make what work?" she asked, her voice somehow went out in an almost a whisper.
"I'm also sorry that I lied to you," he sighed and chuckled next, causing her brows to furrow even more as the confusion built up. "I didn't actually stay at my family's house for two weeks the other day. I was... I was here. And for the weeks that I ignored you, I was also here."
"I don't –" Chaeyoung's head shook softly. "I don't understand. What –what are –what do you mean?"
He gave her a lingering gaze, the corner of his lips slowly curved upward. "I hope you won't get bored of seeing me?" Jungkook grinned with one brow lifted.
"What?"
"You're probably going to see me every single day."
"What?" she breathed.
"I told my parents about my plan, and they agreed to help me with all the stuff that I need to do from the college to accommodations, everything basically."
Her eyes blinked rapidly, her voice barely came out when she responded him. "No way."
Jungkook chuckled, brushing his palm up and down the side of her body. "We'll be studying in the same college."
She considered herself lucky that there wasn't any bugs flying around or else, she'd get at least one of them fly into her mouth when it was left hanging open upon hearing it from Jungkook.
He'd be enrolling into the same college as hers and he'd be around her like what she always wished for. It was all like a dream that she wished she wouldn't wake up from, except that this was absolutely a reality.
"You're joking. Tell me you're joking." Her voice was trembling.
Wrinkles formed around the corners of his eyes as his grin widened. "I consider myself as hilarious at times, but babe, this isn't really the time for me to joke," he chuckled.
Her mouth once again hung open. "Oh my god," she covered her mouth.
His grin was the most beautiful ever and her tears were uncontrollable at that time.
Jungkook leaned closer, their noses almost bumped to each other. "Surprise," he whispered to her, his warm breath caressed her damp face.
Chaeyoung's arms were around him again. The embrace was probably stronger than before.
What more could she ask? Her boyfriend aka best friend aka soul mate would be there for her to spend her life with. All her worries dissolved just like that upon that confirmation. She believed that one of the best moments in her life was that moment indeed.
"I wanted it to be a surprise. Are you surprised?" he asked, voice was muffled by her shirt.
Chaeyoung nodded her head vigorously and laughed, tightening her hold around him before she loosened it to step back a little just to lock her lips with him. "I love you," she said in between the kisses. "So much."
She was aware of all the eyes watching them kissing each other affectionately but she couldn't really get herself affected by them all when her boyfriend was there for her, with her.
"Come on, let's get your stuff and get moving," he smiled warmly after they pulled apart. "I've made myself familiar with this place for all the weeks I've been here. So I'll be your tour guide for now. How does that sound?"
"Perfect," she beamed. "Wait, hold on."
"What is it?"
She sniffled softly and cupped his face as she smiled her apology. Jungkook looked a little confuse and she quickly slipped her hand into her pocket and reached for the necklace.
"I'm really sorry that I took it off. I was about to give it to Junghyun to pass it to you because I thought –I thought you dumped me and if you did, I don't think I'd be able to move on with it although I'd want to keep it forever."
His huge eyes went wider as he shook his head softly. "Babe, I would never..."
"I know," she nodded and her tears slipped off even more. "I'm dumb for even thinking that way. I'm sorry," she pouted.
"Ssh. No, no, babe. It's me. I'm sorry for making you think that way." Jungkook pulled her into a hug before planting small kisses on her lips multiple times.
"Can you please help me with it?" she pulled her hair to the side and smiled when Jungkook sweetly smiled at her as he took the necklace into his hand. Once he put it on her, Chaeyoung's smile widened when she felt him slipping his hand into hers, pulling her toward where she'd left her luggage when she saw him and ran toward him.
"Shall we go?" he asked with a brow lifted.
Just when she thought she'd forever get something blocking the way in her relationship with Jungkook, she was proven wrong because there were indeed rainbows after those heavy rains.
"Let's go," she said happily, holding onto his arm tightly.
