Ava looks up at Derek, he's got his eyes closed relaxing against the hard cave wall. She's so happy that he found her, but even more happy that he found the cave. She thought no one knew it was here and that only she could see it, but somehow Derek did. She looks at his soft features, small nose, a little stubble along his chin, and perfect eyebrows that remind Ava of the arc of a rainbow, only without the color. Derek stirs under her watchful eye and cracks open one eye. Ava smiles.
"You okay?" he asks.
She nods, she is now that he is here. She saw evil eyes lurking in the bushes. The wind saved her, hiding her from whatever was watching her.
"I'm going to check on the storm in a minute. Did you get any sleep?" he asks.
She nods, "A little. I slept a lot before. The wind, it comforted me."
"Where'd you get that awesome little crown?" he asks, tugging playfully at it.
"A friend," she says with a smirk.
"You're not talking to strangers in the woods, are you?"
She shakes her head, "No, not people. It's magic," she says.
Derek stares at her for a long while, and Ava see's a spark in his eye - like he knows and believes her. He senses something magical is here, Ava just knows it. Derek stands dusting himself off. Ava follows quietly behind him tip toeing like she's afraid she's sneaking around. Derek stops for a moment.
"Where are your shoes?" he asks. "Did you lose them in the woods?"
Ava shakes her head, "Forgot them," she shrugs and smirks.
Derek messes up her hair a bit and she giggles.
"It's nice to hear your little giggle Ava. We were all very scared," Derek says. He kneels down to Ava's height and holds onto her two small hands. "Please, don't ever run away like that again. I know why you did it and I'm so sorry about what is going to happen, but you can't run off like that. Your mom, she's here and worried about you."
"I don't want to go home yet. It's too early," Ava squeaks.
"That's up to your mom sweetie."
"We have to save it," she says, sadly looking down at their hands.
"Ava, sweetie. I'm not sure anything can be done at this point, but if it means the world to you... maybe there's something we can do," he says.
"Really?" she asks, her eyes lighting up with delight.
"I said I can try, no promises. You have to promise me that you will never run away like that again," he says.
"I pinky swear," she says, pulling her hand away and holding up her petite little pinky.
Derek chuckles and links his pinky with hers.
"Okay, let's see if we can get out of here," he says.
Ava nods and squares her shoulders. Derek stands as the two of them head for the entrance of the cave, hoping for a way out.
