20.
The Darlings, aunt Chris, and Derek all wait inside the stuffy old mayor's office in the center of town. There's a soft buzzing sound that hums through the old building, ugly old brown paneled walls, and a fraying brown carpet under their feet. Ava shifts nervously in her squeaky green seat trying to stay calm. Her leg bounces up and down to the beat of the soft jazz music playing on a small radio on the secretary's desk.
Derek walks over to Ava, places both hands on her knees and kneels down in front of her.
"Hey," he says.
"Hello," she says, trying to act calm.
"I know Mr. Bloomfield. He and my dad are good friends, I think we got this in the bag," he says.
Ava lifts a brow at him, "In the bag?"
He chuckles, "In other words, I think there's a good chance of saving it," he says.
"Excuse me Mr. Fields," the secretary says.
Derek stands at the mention of his name, and spins to the woman at the desk. She lifts her round glasses up with her pointer and smiles with her bright red lips.
"Mr. Bloomfield will see you now. Please tell your dad we said hello."
"Will do, Ms. Kelly," he says.
They all stand and head into the door right behind the small desk up front. Derek goes in first and the moment he does old Mr. Bloomfield has a huge smile on his face.
"Derek," he says, in a cheerful tone.
Ava puts on her best smile when she sees the man, because he looks just like Santa. Her eyes light up as she takes in his crystal blue eyes, fluffy white beard, and white hair to match. The man is round and has red cheeks, although it's probably from the lack of air conditioning inside the building. Sophie whispers to Kate, "Is that Santa?" Lauren Darling laughs when she hears the comment.
Ava walks around Derek who's shaking Mr. Bloomfields hand, and stares up at him. Mr. Bloomfield feels her stare and looks down. His smile reaches his eyes causing wrinkles at the ends of his eyes.
"Hello, I'm Mayor Bloomfield and who might you be?" he questions.
"The name is Ava sir," she says, standing up tall.
She reaches out to shake his hand just like Derek had. The man chuckles and takes her tiny hand in his.
"It's lovely to meet you Ava," he says. "I hear you have a pretty amazing place you want to save," he says.
"I do sir, it's magical. You do believe in magic, don't you?" she asks.
The man laughs, but not to be mean.
"Why of course I do Ms. Ava," he says.
She smiles, "Well then we'll get along just fine sir," she says, squaring her shoulders.
"We have pictures sir," Kate steps forward with a manila folder full of the pictures they took last night.
She holds it out to him and he takes them from her hands. He opens the folder and begins looking through the photos. His eyes light up with each shot.
"These are magnificent, aside from the beauty of the falls, you darling are a great photographer," he tells her.
"Thank you," Kate says, blushing.
"Derek. Son, I'm so glad that you brought these to my attention. I looked over the paperwork you brought over from the library and you are correct. That place is protected because it's a landmark. If we tear down those woods, that place won't be such a hidden gem anymore," he says.
"So can you stop the bad men?" Ava asks.
Mayor Bloomfield sighs, "It will be hard work on my end, but I think it will all be okay. Would you folks mind if I came by one day to check it out. You know that house you live in," he says turning to aunt Chris. "That was my childhood home. I'd forgotten how beautiful those woods were and just how special the falls were. I guess as you get older sometimes you forget to see the beauty in certain things," he says.
"Sir, the place is magical," Sohpie says. "I've seen it with my own two eyes," she adds.
"Your pictures bring back memories," he says. "I think as adults we need to start bringing some magic back in our lives."
"I knew I liked you," Ava says.
Mayor Bloomfield, Derek, aunt Chris, and all of the Darlings laugh.
"Thank you Mr. Bloomfield," aunt Chris says, stepping forward.
He smiles at her, "So you're the beautiful lady that has stolen this man's heart," he says with a smile. "I've heard a lot about you from Mr. Fields and Derek," he says.
Aunt Chris blushes, "I hope good things?"
He nods, "Of course."
"Well thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Saving this place is the right thing to do."
"I agree with you. I wish I could have helped sooner."
They finish up with Mr. Bloomfield and he says he will do his best to make sure that the company coming to build knows everything. The minute they get outside into the fresh late spring sun Ava starts sobbing.
"Ava sweetie, what is it?" Lauren Darling asks her daughter.
"We did it, didn't we? The magic will be okay."
"It seems that way sweetie."
"Momma, is it okay if I go there alone today?"
She looks down at her six year old daughter, knowing very well that she knows her way, but still she cannot allow her daughter to go traipsing in the woods by herself.
"How about just me and you kid?"
"That could work."
The moment they all arrive back at the house; Derek, aunt Chris, Sohpie and Kate work on getting lunch prepared while Ava and Lauren Darling set off into the woods. The moment they are deep enough the tree's start to sway as if they were bowing in gratitude for what Ava and her family did. Lauren Darling looks around watching the tree's and not believing what she is seeing. White swirls kick up from the wind and heads straight for them, Lauren seems nervous, but Ava giggles as it whirls around her.
"I told you there was magic here," she tells her mom.
Lauren kneels down in front of her daughter and takes both of her hands.
"I should have never doubted that. You are an amazing little girl, do you know that?"
"So I'm told," she says with a sassy attitude.
Lauren Darling laughs at her daughter's wit.
"Come on mom, let's go tell the magic that it's safe."
Lauren stands, but keeps hold of one of Ava's hands. As they reach the clearing the woods begin to sing their song of thanks. Grasshoppers are clicking along the path, the whizzing sound of other insects join in, the soft breeze continues rustling the leaves, and the sound of their light footsteps as they walk into the clearing stomp out the beat.
"Home," Ava says.
Lauren looks at her daughter and smiles, "What do you mean darling?"
"These woods, they are home," she says.
Lauren watches as her daughter rushes off to the meadow with the swirling wind following her. Ava's giggles echo through the clearing, and Lauren realizes what Ava means and knows what she has to do. It would be a good thing for her and her family, a new start with new memories and the perfect place for her children to play and grow up. Now to just go through with the purchase and tell her kids the good news. For now, Lauren decides to forget the world and dance with her daughter in the meadow in this magic place of Rainbow Falls.
