16.
Two days later Ava watches from her window as the men work. They were almost done and that gave Ava a sense of hope. It gave her hope that soon she'd be able to visit her friends inside those woods. Now with Sophie on her side, she knew things could only get better from here.
Ava couldn't wait for her mom to get there, she was on her way. Deep down she knows that her mom will believe. Her mom has the biggest heart out of anyone she knows. Ava doesn't remember much, she was only three when her daddy was taken to heaven, but she does remember her mom always trying to see the silver lining in bad situations. After a storm comes a rainbow, she'd always say. Now, hearing that it reminds her of the falls and the rainbow in the mist. Ava may be young, but she knows her mom is a strong woman and is open to believing in miracles.
The door to the bedroom opens and there's a soft knock.
"Is that my Ava bug?"
Ava gasps. Her mom, Lauren Darling must have known she was thinking about her. She turns, eyes wide with excitement and a smile plastered on her face.
"Mama!"
Ava squeals and runs to her mom. Lauren picks her daughter up and hugs her. Ava knows just by her hug that she will believe. Ava thinks her mom and aunt Chris give the most amazing hugs in the whole wide world.
"Don't you dare scare me like that again," she says, setting Ava down on the ground.
"I'm so sorry mama. It's just the woods, they need my help," she tells her.
Her mom sits on the floor to get comfortable, then invites Ava to sit on her lap. She wraps her arm around Ava holding her tight.
"You thought by running into them you could help?"
Ava nods, "The wind speaks to me," she tells her mother.
The look on her moms face is uncertain, but she knows she can convince her.
"It asked me to help save the magic. Derek found me by magic. I found the way out by magic. Magic is really mommy, it really is. You just have to look in here," Ava says pointing to her mom's heart. "To find it."
Lauren sighs and looks down at her beautiful adventurous daughter.
"Sweetheart, some days I think you are older than you are. You were always so intune with nature and your surroundings. I wish there were a way we could save those woods. Trees are very important here on earth and it's amazing what a big heart you have."
"Everyone keeps telling me that," she says.
"What?"
"That I have a big heart," she says.
"It's all true Ms. Ava," she tells her daughter.
"Will you help me save it?"
Ava looks up at her mom with pleading eyes.
"Honey, I don't know what I can..."
"Believe," Ava croaks. "Believe mommy, that's all you have to do."
"Ava, honey..."
"Can I take you in the woods?"
"It might be too dangerous..."
"Please mommy, I want you to see the falls."
Ava looks up at her mom with pleading eyes. If she could just show her mom the falls then maybe, just maybe she'd believe. Her mom cups her cheeks with her hands.
"When they tell us it's safe, I will come see the falls."
"Really?" Ava's face lights up with excitement.
"Really," her mom replies.
"You're the best mommy in the whole wide world," Ava says, hugging her mom tight.
"Am I interrupting?" aunt Chris asks from the doorway.
They both look up at aunt Chris and shake their heads.
"Well, there's some ice cream downstairs, and it's melting...."
Ava stands and runs for the kitchen. Aunt Chris extends her arm towards her sister. She takes it and stands. The two of them follow an excited Ava down the stairs, where Derek, Kate and Sophie all sit at the kitchen table shoveling in spoonfuls of ice cream.
"Best vacation EVER!" Sophie should.
"To the best vacation EVER!" Derek yells out, and everyone follows as they lift their cups of ice cream to the ceiling.
Everyone around the table laughs. Out of the corner of Ava's eye she catches a glimpse of a swirl of wind just outside the kitchen window. She watches the swirls come together to make a smiling face, and she's relieved the magic really is okay. Now all that's left to do is to save it.
