Ava walks in step with Derek as they make their way through the woods. Branches, twigs, leaves and other debris litter the dirt pathway, making it hard for them to navigate around.
"You okay, do you need me to carry you?" he asks Ava.
Ava is busy jumping over small sticks and zig zagging around the debris that she almost doesn't hear Derek. She feels his stare and looks up.
"I'm okay for now. This is kind of fun," she says.
Derek smiles down at her thankful that both of them escaped the storm unharmed. He loves how Ava loves life. They just survived a scary storm and possible tornado and Ava looks unphased by it all. As she hops over the debris she sings to herself and giggles at the parts of the songs she finds funny.
Derek would never admit it to Ava, but he was terrified when the storm passed through. His mind won't stop spinning with the thought of what would have happened if he hadn't found her. He also wonders what would have happened if he hadn't made it to that cave on time. They definitely wouldn't be walking through these woods right now towards home. He may not have been walking at all.
"That cave sure was something else," Derek says.
Ava stops humming and looks up at Derek. She smiles and nods, "It really is amazing," she says. "Can I tell you a secret?"
Derek kneels down to get closer to her and she leans over to whisper in his ear.
"I believe in magic," she says.
Derek pulls away a smile on his face. Derek isn't sure what to believe, but he does know that something out there directed him towards that cave. He nods, "I believe something helped me find you," he tells her. "I also believe that anything is possible, the world is full of things we will never understand."
"I think my magic friends would like that answer," she says.
Derek smiles, "What friends?" he asks.
"The wind, the trees, nature," she says, spinning around like a princess spinning to show off her new dress.
"You've got a big heart Ava Darling," he says.
"That doesn't sound like a very good thing," she says, scrunching up her nose.
Derek chuckles and reaches his hand out to her. He takes her hand and twirls her around like there's music playing in the background for them to dance to.
"Silly girl, having a big heart means you're a good person. You see the world in a positive light and you always look for the best in others."
"Oh," she says, giggling as Derek dips her. "Then yes, yes I do have a big heart," she says with a smile.
Derek continues to dance with her to music only they can hear. It's like nature decided to make its own song just for them. For the first time since leaving the cave the birds are singing to each other from the tree tops, a gentle breeze sings in their ears, squirrels are rustling about in the trees playing with one another, and faintly in the distance they can still hear the sounds of the falls crashing into the pool of water at the bottom.
"Hear that?" Ava asks, as she's twirled into Derek's arms.
"What am I listening for?" he asks, curious as to what her little mind is thinking about.
"That is the sound of magic singing to us, like in the mermaid movie where the crab makes all the animals use nature to make music," she says.
Derek chuckles, "One day you'll find your own Prince Charming who will dance with you to the sound of nature's music."
"Oh no Derek, boys have cooties. That's not happening," she tells him.
Derek laughs, but the moment is quickly over when something snaps above him. He grabs Ava and the two scurry away just before a hanging limb falls into the spot they were just dancing. Derek is holding her in his arms. He watches her face closely and for the first time since he found her she looks frightened.
"We should get moving, it's not safe here," he says.
She looks up at him with teary eyes and quivering lips.
"What's wrong sweetheart?" he asks, wiping away a single tear that falls down her cheek.
"If it's not safe. Maybe that means the magic is gone," she says sadly. "We have to find it again Derek, we have to save the woods."
"Why don't we worry about that after we get back to your aunt's house. We can clean up, and have a nice helping of mac and cheese," he says to her.
She gives him a small smile, but her heart is sad knowing the magic somehow slipped away.
"Okay. I'll carry you for a bit. You should try to rest a little," he says.
She nods her little sleepy head and rests it against her shoulder. A small hole in the ground causes him to falter, but he holds Ava tight so he doesn't drop her, but his ankle feels wounded. Derek shakes it off so that he can get Ava home safe and sound.
