Blood in the Sky
Rain poured down, as if nothing could hold back the endless streams of water, so thick it was impossible to see. Glory darted along the outskirts of the rainforest, close enough to see the outline of the trees but too far away to get there without being instantly drenched.
Deathbringer was right on her tail, shouting over the wind as they attempted to make their way to the rainforest, where they would be safe.
"See, this is why you need a bodyguard. To save you from the raging battles of wind and rain". He tried to put on a heroic face, but failed as he swallowed water and came up sputtering.
Glory laughed. As much as she wanted to tease him of give a snappy retort, she couldn't with Deathbringer. Every comment just faded away into her laughter, like the rain into the mud they were stuck in. She loved him so much, though she hated to admit it. She desperately wanted to be the one protecting him, but he'd never allow it. He was too busy guarding her. And that's the way it was, with them both so hopelessly entangled into one another that they would fall apart without the other. She was nothing before him, and everything after. They would die without each other.
They almost made it. If Glory had not looked up and hesitated, they would have been safe. But her eye was caught on the streaks of red, like blood, in the air, lit up by lightning and easy to see. It was the Skywings. They came out of nowhere, speeding down from the clouds and landing gracefully on the ground.
They were attacking before Glory could even comprehend their appearance, before she could whisper a warning. But they didn't go after Glory, they barely seemed to notice her as they slammed into Deathbringer and pinned him to the ground. There were three of them, slender bodies trembling in the anticipation of their next move. The female sliced a claw across his face, whispering words into his ear, making his black scales turn frighteningly pale.
Glory was running towards them when the lightening struck. It arched up her body, sending spasms of pain up her back. When it released its grip she was left panting and sprawled on the ground. She slowly changed her scales to match the color of the beach around her and crept towards the Skywings. Her claws trembled from effort as she tried to make her was to the only dragon she loved. The rain made it hard to see, and the shock made it nearly impossible to walk, but she got there.
Her venom went straight into the eyes of the one pinning down Deathbringer, and she collapsed in a heap, and hit the second on the cheek. The third hissed in alarm, but unable to see her, slowly backed away.
"I may not be able to see you, dragon of rain and queen of night, but I know you're there and someday, I will find you. Soon your Nightwings will have a new queen, and the Skywings will get everything we were promised. Nightwalker will succeed. You and your boyfriend are no longer safe. You will watch as everything you know goes up in flames." She dragged her injured friend up with her and flew off.
Glory's mind spun, both from the lightning and the Skywings words. She couldn't think about it now though. She pulled Deathbringer into the trees where they were finally safe. For now.
