Chapter 2: Infestation
When I stepped through that door I expected an escape from this place, but instead I found a nightmare. A horde of those zombies chased me through the facility until I managed to elude them. My body collapses as I try to catch my breath. The whole facility must be infected, great. Most of the staff, as I remember, were good people. But now they're more like ravenous zombies. It didn't take long for the infection to spread. I wonder if CAF is still active. My mouth moved to speak, but a sudden moan made me rethink calling CAF. Standing up, I quiet my breathing as a zombie shuffles down a nearby hall. My back against the wall as I see a strange figure cut down the zombie without a moment's hesitation. My head swings back around the corner; just as the strange figure comes near. He's a man, an infected man. But unlike the other zombies, he seems intelligent. It was almost like he was human. Everything about him seemed so human.
Everything except for his appearance. His appearance looked very similar to those zombies. Same bleeding green eyes, same barnacle infested black skin. However, despite the similarities, one thing stood out to me. Unlike the other zombies, he didn't wear a lab coat. Instead, a long trench coat flowed behind him. A trench coat? Who is this guy? I watched as he walked. His pace like the wind as he strides down the hall. When he's far enough away, I let out a sigh of relief. He's gone! Man! Zombies and now an intelligent infected too?! Escape has just gotten a lot harder. Maybe I can go back to the kitchen. There was another hall I could take which might lead me away from these infected. But as I retrace my steps the metal beneath my feet creaks. My body stiffens as the creaking sound echoes throughout the entire hall. The man's footsteps stop. Oh no! He must have heard me! I have to go! Quietly I tiptoe down the hall. Please don't let him hear me! Please don't let him hear me! As I continue to creep down the hall, I here a moan and dragging footsteps. My back turns to find nothing, but turning back I am greeted by the same infected guy. He heard me! Slowly he approaches, his brilliant green eyes focused on me. I try to run but I trip over my own feet.
"Please! I don't want any trouble. I just want to leave here!" But instead of hearing me, he points his sword at my throat. It's long sharp tip just an inch away from my throat. So close I'm afraid to breathe. I look into his eyes, pleading for him not to kill me. But something weird happens; his sword goes flying into the air. The man also goes flying and lands just several feet in front of me. He's down, now's my chance! I get up with such speed as to seem like lightning. My first instinct is to run, but I just can't bring myself to do it.
"Please forgive me" I whisper, my voice shallow and quiet. I try to get moving, I try to at least put one foot in front of another, but I just can't! It's all my fault, I hurt him. But I have to get a grip, there's a horde coming! I hear the collective sounds of moans coming closer and closer. Before I go, I take one last look at the man. I move on now!
I run, my feet swift as I travel down the other hall. When I reach the door I push the button to close it. Wait, this isn't another hall! It's a storage room. Good going, Rain! You trapped yourself. I look around for any way out and find it in the form of a vent. My arms climb the enormous mountain of storage boxes. Man, for a small room this has a lot of boxes. When I manage to climb the boxes, the horde is banging against the door. I have to hurry! With all my strength I attempt to pull the vent filter from the vent. It creaks and slowly as possible it comes off. I throw myself into the vent as the horde bursts through the door. Well, at least I'm safe now.
When crawling through the vent, I was fortunate enough that the vent can accommodate my size. It was surprisingly roomy with very little air blowing. When I crossed into the hall, I started to notice the bodies of infected piling up. Wait, is that infected man killing other infected? That's unusual. Quietly I crawl through the vents just hoping not to be heard. Below me, I see the infected man sheath his long sword. His strange green eyes fixated on the vents above. I try my hardest to stay quiet, and I succeed. But my success was short lived.
The man starts to slash the vents behind me. I crawl as fast as I can but he soon learns from his mistake. He slashes the vent in front of me sending me tumbling out. Again his sword points to my throat. I close my eyes to avoid to sight of my imminent death but notice...he's hesitating. His sword glued to my throat. Why is he hesitating? Maybe I'm not dead after all! A sudden jolt of sparks stings the man's hand. Its black coating burned off by my presence. In an instant he pulls back his sword and starts to limp away. With him gone, I get up and run with as much speed as my body will let me. Down the hall, an elevator appears. It's light green, and here I thought the infection shut down CAF. I reach the elevator and push the button then enter into my temporary haven.
