Chapter 1: Message of Invasion
Today was a dark day. When I stepped outside, the sky above me began to darken. Its once fluffy white clouds began to grow bigger and darker. In defiance to the clouds ominous presence, the sun continues to shine. But it soon became apparent that the sun's light could not shine forever. Its light, oh so warm and comforting, was soon blotted out by the clouds ever expanding darkness. A sudden gust of wind blew goosebumps up my arms. It's going to rain soon. I hope the bus gets here before the rain does. I don't want to be going to school soaking wet.
As I wait for the bus, I began to get anxious. The clouds are getting darker and darker, I really need that bus to hurry! I can't go to school soaking wet again! A few days ago, it rained hard. It rained so hard that I was soaking wet by the time I got on the bus. When I got to school, I had to go to the lost and found and get some new clothes. It was so embarrassing! And the clothes weren't even washed! Eww! But hopefully today the bus will come before the rain. At least, I hope.
Suddenly, my ears pick up a familiar screeching sound. I turn my head and see a long yellow bus stop at a nearby house. Oh thank goodness! What a relief. The bus stopped, honked the horn, then slowly crawled up to my house. As it did, the screeching sound became louder and louder. Man, I know these buses are old but they could have at least put some grease on them, you know?
After five minutes, the bus finally stopped in front of me. Its double doors extend, welcoming me into its space. Without delay, I climb the dirty steps and take my seat near the middle. Soon, we were off. As we trekked to school, I smelled a familiar scent. My head turns toward the window and I see the rain has finally fallen. Well, at least today I got on the bus before it fell. At least today I'm not soaking wet. However, this smell also brings back a distant memory. A memory I've tried my best to get over. A couple months ago, I had escaped the facility along with Tristan. I had just saved his life and healed him from his infection. We were standing on the beach. In front of us was a city. Its light dazzled us.
"It's beautiful isn't it?" I asked, my eyes glued to its yellow light.
"Yes. I haven't been to this planet in months. It's truly amazing what spectacles we humans can come up with." I nod. When I look back, I realize that this was the first time I was seeing the outside world. It's beautiful out here. So beautiful, my mouth slowly starts to drop. However, the serenity of the moment was soon crashed. While we were out here, I heard sirens in the distance. Of course, I figured that those sirens were going somewhere else. Unfortunately, the place they were going was where we were. In an instant, several police cars came up in front of us. Each one had a cop inside of it. They all got out and pointed their guns at us.
"Halt! You are trespassing on federal property! Put your hands up!" The cop said loudly, the sirens almost obscuring his voice. Immediately, I obey. There's no way I'm getting shot today. I just escaped death by zombies, no way I'm dying because of a stupid decision. With my hands raised, I expected them to lower their weapons. But they didn't. Why aren't they lowering their weapons? I have my hands raised. I glance over at Tristan and see why their weapons aren't lowered. Tristan, instead of raising his hands, stared at them with a stern look.
"Tristan! Put your hands up! Are you trying to get us both killed?!" I ask over the sirens. Tristan didn't reply. Instead, his attention was focused on the officers.
"I will not obey! Not for your sake, Rain." With that, the police cars suddenly went sky high. They flipped several times in the air and then landed with a loud crash.
"Tristan! What did you do?!" I say as I turned to him. My voiced shook with fear. Tristan just did something. I don't know what, but he did. Am I going to be arrested? I don't want to go to jail! I can't!
"I'm saving your life. Go! Run! Run before they catch you." I shook my head.
"No! I can't leave you here!" Tristan turned to me. His brilliant green eyes bore into mine with a look of urgency. With a look like that, I knew he wasn't playing around. But still, I couldn't leave him here. I can't run while he is arrested. What kind of friend would I be? But yet, Tristan told me to. But... you know what, I trust him. I looked at Tristan and nodded to him. Then, I ran as quickly as my feet could carry me. Three months have passed since that day. And still I feel guilty. I should never have left him behind. I should have stayed with him. After all, he's my friend. Plus, if I stayed, then maybe I would have been safer.
Ever since I ran, I've been followed by Plexions. They were the ones responsible for the zombie outbreak at the facility. They've been hunting me down. So far, I've managed to avoid them. But, recently I've had some close calls with them. I don't know how long I can keep this up. I've been running, but I don't think it's working. The Plexions that came after me, I've healed them but they keep sending one after the other. One of these days, I'm going to get caught. And when I do, it's not going to be a good day.
After a while of gazing out the window and reflecting on my past, I find my attention turning to the noise in the back. While normally noisy, a strange quiet has engulfed the back of the bus. Curious, I turn my head. I couldn't tell what was going on. It was as if everyone's mouths couldn't move. The strange quiet in the back is now starting to envelop the bus. Everyone was silent. What's going on? Did everyone just decide that their conversations wasn't interesting enough? I turn my head over to the girl sitting across from me. Her eyes are seemingly glued to whatever is on her phone.
"Patricia? What's going on?" I asked quietly, unwilling to disturb the peace. Patricia motioned for me to sit down beside her. I get up and sit down with her. Patricia, with a few taps on her phone, pulls up a video.
"This was made a few minutes ago" She whispered. When she tapped the video, it came to life. Immediately, fear swept through my very being. On the screen was a Plexion. His brilliant, bleeding green eyes sent shivers down my spine. This can't be good.
"Good morning to you and your fellow Earthlings! Me and my people come to you in the spirit of unity, cooperation, and peace. Which, I'm sure, that you Earthlings will receive us in the same light. We come here today under the gravest of circumstances. You see there is a certain girl by the name of Rain Everest walking among you. This girl has killed several of my people. And, as you all can sympathize, I want justice for those that have fallen. However, because she is on your planet, I have no jurisdiction. Which is why I ask you to bring her to us. Our ship is currently stationed above your planet. If you find her, bring her up to us. And we will see to it that your planet does not get destroyed. Now I know that some of you may see us as threatening because of our... strange appearance. And I know some of you may resist us. Which is why I will give you all seventy-two hours to find her. If you do not find her, then I will give your planet a proper reunion with not only the galaxy at large but with us as well. Happy hunting." And with that, the video goes off. Horror and shock goes through me like a tidal wave. How could they? How could they do this? This isn't right! They can't do this! But yet, they just did. I thank Patricia and stand up. I can't let them threaten Earth. But what can I do against them? My powers can only work on one of them. The only thing I can do is to go up there and surrender myself. But if I do that, will they abide by the agreement? I don't know. But what I do know is that I can't let them destroy Earth with their virus. I will go up there and surrender. The bus pulls up to the school and I get off, not knowing what will soon befall me.
