prologue. the fire.

I hate introductions.

you never know what to say, who your talking to

or what will offend them.                                                                                                                                                    but, I will make an exception, considering you cant write back fully.

my name, Is Virgil "anxiety" Thompson. I am currently 16 years old , going into college, and an orphan. your probably thinking all sorts of questions about my character, and pity is pretty much the only look your giving the screen. but, dear readers, all questions will be answered in due time.

"but how does your story start?"  you think, questioningly.

well,

it all started with a canvas.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

it was Saturday ,November 29th, and the Thompson family was out getting groceries. the parents were happy, but they never had enough money or time for a marriage. so , they kept  it a secret, so their son could grow up happily . they had been planning a surprise birthday party for their brilliant little son, who was turning five in the next month, and were hiding presents under their coats in the cart to be bought and wrapped. "Virgil? come on , sweetheart! were about to check out!" the boys mother called out to her son, who was trying to figure out how a model train worked, just by lifting the hood and peering at the miniature engine inside. he looked up, slammed the hood back on the toy, and with an innocent smile , joined his mother, who was shaking her head with a smile of disbelief.

as the family was passing  the  aisles, Virgil spotted a square of white, wrapped in cellophane in the corner of his eye- it was a canvas! he pointed at it an whispered to his father, earning a smile. the mother snuck the canvas into the cart when Virgil and his father went to look at winter coats. the parents shared a knowing smile when they met up, trying not to show their excitement.

two weeks passed and Virgil had just come home with his report card . when his parents saw it, they were overjoyed. Virgil was a genius! all of his subjects were top grade, (except p.e but , hey, he was a skinny little kid at the time and was just getting used to it.)"At this rate you may become a doctor!" his mother exclaimed, throwing her arms around her son. " but I wanna be a writer and an artist! he laughed in playful protest. "well if your gonna do that, you need lots of practice!" his mother said, hinting  at her son to go to his room and play as they made dinner.

" oh ! Oh! I can do dat right now!" Virgil exclaimed, running and gathering paper and some colored pencils to take up to his room. his parents watched with proud fascination as their son shot upstairs to his room.

Just as Virgil left, his mother crumpled into a ball on the floor as pain flared through her spine, along with images of fire, blood,  burns , screams,  the dark chocolate brown hair of her son, singed at the ends, framed by white and light turquoise, and the heartbreaking voice of her son, saying:

"don't go!"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

while the vision took place, Virgil was playing happily with his pad of paper. he was currently trying to sketch his iris purple teddy bear . a half an hour passed and he was curious about what was happening, and then smoke started pouring in and a  scream tore through the air. his eyes widened as he jumped up and scrambled to the door, tugging it open, only to be blown back by a small explosion and a wave of heat.

he whimpered, slowly getting up, he knew that in these conditions he should stay on the ground, but he fought the fear down with a fire equal  to the one in his house. he staggered down the stairs be fore finding his parents in a closet. they were unconscious and severely burned. but they could be saved if he succeeded . he took off his  shirt and tore it is two. he wrapped the scraps around their faces to act as shields against the oncoming heat that was eating away at the closet door. he mentally prepared himself, then with a surge of adrenaline and something that didn't feel of this world, he tore the remains of a door open, and stormed out.

with his parents in tow, the little boy navigated the house with expertise and strength. he pursued the hope that they would survive, and he ignored the blood trickling into his eyes and the burns on his small, strong body. he simply tugged his parents in an agonizingly slow manor, and he shielded them with his arms as Virgil escaped his burning childhood and collapsed, letting out an agonizing yell that you could hear from miles away.  it sounded almost inhumane, like a demon was screeching behind him. he felt his consciousness start to slip underneath his fingers, and he welcomed the abyss known as sleep into his mind.

when he woke up, he was in a hospital bed. He sat up immediately, trying not to panic, as he surveyed the white and turquoise room. his heartbeat quickened when he saw his mother and father  on hospital beds, with equipment at their sides. he sprung out of the bed , but as he was running to his parents, the I.V in his arm tore out, leaving yet another scratch to be taken care of. his body was screaming out in pain as he reached his parents sides, yearning for more rest. but he ignored it, holding onto his mothers hand, rubbing it with quiet reassurance, and whispering hopeful things, half to himself, as he stayed with them all through the night, crying silent tears.

in the morning, Virgil awoke, to feel his mothers pulse slowing , "don't go!" he said with anguish, as his mother smiled weakly and whispered her last words into his ear, before laying down with  a blank stare, for she would speak never more.
