Expression are the way, to let out the Characters  feelings. Characters are the main thing impresses Readers much. The feeling through which Character  undergoes needs to be expressed keenly.

Adding emotions make the story  more beautiful  and meaningful.

And makes the writer feel attach to the Story.

Character 's emotions;

He was angry.

(Its not  expressing the deep emotion)

Use this:

He clenched his jaws and his hands fisted together, surpessing  the feelings to punch someone.

(This details, what's  the true condition the character is going through )

Body Language;

Give  body language. Describe  things like facial expression, shaking and posture.

"Leave me." She said.

In this we don't  what way the character expressed it. Was it in way of Pleading, or anger! That's  missing. It's  the main thing we needs to fill.

"Leave me." She shouted in high tone, her voice lacing with anger, her eyes are red in fury. She didn't  know from where did she got this brave from!

The character said the same dialogue, but here with the extra details of her feelings, it gives us Vivid picture of the character Image. What she is undergoing?

He lit the cigaratee, and let out a smoke.

Here. He did something, but that don't  give what the feelings he is in. It simply  state the action he is doing now.
 

Leaning against the door, he took the Cigaratee from his pocket, needing the support and way to let his frustration out. He lit the Cigarette, his face was relaxing a bit after a inhale and he let out a smoke.

Do you sense what's  his feelings?

He going through  frustrations, without words utter from him, he understood his feelings.

Extra details

He said.

He asked.

He replied.

(These are simple terms.)

Try to use;

He retort back.

He spat back furiously.

He replied firmly.

He said in the resigned tone.

He replied calmly yet Firmly.

He asked raising his brows.

He winked.

He scowled at her.

In this, the replying mode had defined. Thats important,  in which  way he replies. Was he telling it in joking, or Seriously needs to said.

He said seriously.

He replied with a grin.

So......

It's  your way to tell definition. It's  complement  the story.
