Chapter 40: Honor him

A/N: Time to say goodbye to this story everyone! I'm not ready to, in all honesty. But let's finish this!

(Normal pov— Heart Nation)

It had been three years after Drago Bludvist and his Northern Alliance that slaughtered countless cultures, civilizations, and peoples had finally been defeated. Those fortunate enough to survive the former junta's barbarism had become refugees, and many of these people had come to Kumandra seeking refuge. Though Tail and Talon's leaders were reluctant to open Kumandra to outsiders, Chief Benja suggested that these refugees should be tended to and then sent on their way, however, if those wanted to settle in their lands were more than happy to. Kumandra's people and the refugees became one, working together and living harmoniously alongside the dragons who submitted Sisudatu and her siblings. The quintuple dragon alphas ruled over the dragons fairly and justly, seeing that all the dragons that had been under the thralldom of the Northern Alliance found peace. Even after all the destruction both the Druun and the former junta had inflicted upon Kumandra, the people came together and rebuilt what was destroyed and paid respects to those who died.

Now, was a holiday the Kumandran people called "Unity Day," not only to celebrate the significance of being one people living alongside dragons once again but also to recognize that this unification wouldn't have been possible had it not been for Princess Raya, of Heart Nation and Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, the Last Viking. Though this was a day of celebration, it was also a day of mourning, the losses of those who died so that Kumandra could be where it is today were keenly felt.

Whilst Chief Benja and many of the other leaders of Kumandra and their people gathered in Heart's palace to celebrate this day of unification, not all were gathered in the temple. Just beyond the outskirts of Heart's palace and city, a small group of people and dragons gathered around an elegant, well-detailed statue of Hiccup Haddock. Not only was the statue of his person visible for all to see, but there were pillars that stood on the left and right sides of the statue, telling his story as a boy and how he ultimately became the last of his people and slew the most ruthless man in their lifetime. The people gathered were Chief Tong of Spine Nation, Chieftess Namaari of Fang Nation, a now thirteen-year-old Boun as well as five-year-old Noi, and Princess Raya. The dragons that once belonged to the Riders of Berk had stayed only for a short time, though they all shared unbreakable bonds with their long-dead riders, losing Hiccup was too much for them, and they retreated back to where the other dragons were located.

For the past three years, they would come here to pay homage to the fallen Viking, either placing flowers at the base of the statue or offering words of recollection and remembrance before rejoining the celebrations taking place in Heart's palace.

After voicing their final words of farewell to the former Viking heir who helped them become a unified people, Raya took hold of Inferno and placed the blade at the statue's base. Looking up at the carved stone of the fallen Viking, the princess smiled. "Rest easy, Hiccup Haddock III," she caressed the stone and nodded. "Enjoy Valhalla, my friend. You deserve it." Pulling away from the statue of Hiccup, the princess approached Namaari, Tong, Boun, and Noi, as well as Sisu.

"A warrior to the end," Tong said with admiration in his voice. "He will not be forgotten." Noi nodded in agreement before letting out a sad sigh.

"I'm really gonna miss him," Boun smiled sadly. "I... I never even got to say goodbye to him."

Placing a hand on the boy's head, Namaari looked into his eyes. "He killed the most ruthless warlord in our lifetime, a man who would see us all destroyed. Though you never got to say farewell to our Viking friend, his final actions in this world ensured that we live the remainder of our lives as a free people and be Kumandra once again," smiling to herself, Fang's chief then voiced words of agreement. "I miss him too, little man."

A soft growl rumbled in Sisu's throat before she voiced her thoughts. "He was a man who stood as a bridge that connected both man and dragons. For all of Drago Bludvist's boasts about being the only human capable of controlling dragons, Hiccup Haddock helped Raya bring me back into the world to save you all from the Druun and help bring Kumandra together," she then smiled sadly. "Hiccup Haddock is a true advocate of peace, and a human I will never forget."

Nodding, Raya murmured to herself. "Never," she then spoke louder. "When I found Hiccup for the first time in Tail Nation, he was at death's door, and I was alone in a treacherous world. Meeting and bonding with Hiccup led me to trust in people again, and it's because of him that we are where we are now." Tears swelled in Raya's eyes and they freely flowed down her cheeks, as she wiped them, she continued. "His people were wiped off the face of the earth by Drago Bludvist, as were countless civilizations and cultures, the refugees of these lost cultures have begun anew here and beyond, where they rebuild what was lost thanks to the barbarity of the Northern Alliance. And though it's too late for the Viking people to bloom like a cherry blossom, we owe it to Hiccup that we make sure that the Viking people are not forgotten, he helped people that weren't his own become unified once again."

Stepping forward, Namaari wrapped an arm around her lover's waist and gave her a smile. "The world will never forget Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, Dragon Master of Norway," looking at the statue of the fallen Viking, Fang's leader gave a firm nod. "Word of his loss, actions, heroism, and achievement here will spread and will be spoken of as long as men have tongues to speak of them. They have already spread, but we will ensure the legacy of our fallen friend will endure so those who live here long after we turn to dust and bone will see that a Viking, supposedly a bloodthirsty raider ultimately saved man and dragons liberty from being crushed underneath the heels of Drago Bludvist."

"Well said, my fellow chieftain!" Tong said with adoration before speaking in the language of their ancestors. "Kay Hiccup Haddock, bayani ng Kumandra."

"Kay Hiccup Haddock, bayani ng Kumandra."

Everyone else said before taking their leave and returning back to Heart's palace and joining their fellow Kumandrans in celebration. Raya turned around to lay eyes on the statue of Hiccup one last time, she smiled sadly, wishing that his beliefs didn't require him needing to die in battle in order to reunite with his loved ones. However, despite what she wished, Raya was happy that her friend was now in a better place, resting, after being devoured by hatred and revenge against those who slaughtered his people.

The name Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III would live one, Raya would see to it, she would tell his story and his heroism to her people until the end of her days.

"Rest easy, my friend," she murmured to herself before smiling. "And know that your story will live on, as will the history of the Viking people." With that said, Raya joined her lover and companions while leaving her friend to rest.

The cost of freedom is high, and it's often paid for in bloodshed and war. The blood of Hiccup Haddock, however, has solidified peace for the people of Kumandra and peace for the dragons. In another life perhaps, the same could've been achieved for the Viking people. But though the Viking people are no longer among the living in Midgard, they live and fight on in Odin's halls of heroes, where the brave live forever.

A/N: And that concludes Ragnarök! This has been one of my favorite books to write in all my years of writing, it's bittersweet to see this story end, but all good things must come to an end. Thank you guys so much for sticking with it and I'll see you in the next story!
