Chapter 2

Lux awoke to a spider crawling up her arm. She stilled a scream, but then felt it arise again when she saw the deadly marks on its abdomen. She slowly raised a talon and flicked it in the corner, where she then killed it with a paperweight.

Don't freak out! We see poisonous spiders all around Alitura. No one is trying to kill you, she reasoned to her paranoid self. A single tear rolled down her cheek as she remembers yesterday's events. Amarillo was dead.

Lux, not wanting to waste another second when she could be investigating the death, grabbed a quick apple to eat, slung her bag over her shoulder, and strolled through the royal garden. She plucked a yellow rose off a bush. Amarillo's favorite, she thought sadly. She dropped the rose onto her grave and didn't look back.

There is something fishy with all of this, Lux thought. A sense of unease swept through her.

Once she got to the cliff where she first had spotted her cousin's body, she did a quick perimeter sweep of the area, to make sure no one was lurking around. When the area was clear, she got down to business. She pulled out small flags from her sack and used them to cut the area into smaller sections. Lux found nothing when she searched the first few, but in the fourth segment, she found a flask. Carefully, she dropped it into the bag. However, she didn't find anything else suspicious in the other sectors.

As she was collecting her rainbow-colored marker flags, she heard the sound of wing beats. "What are you doing," a familiar voice asked, which was followed by the thump of talons hitting the earth.

Verde, look at the area confused and turned back to Lux. A look of realization crossed her face when she saw how Lux had turned the area into a crime scene investigation.

"Will you just drop it! Give it up already!" she yelled. "Stop looking for your stupid clues, because there was no murder. My sister is dead, and here you are, instead of helping me plan Amarillo's spirit day." Verde's angry claws tore up the grass, and with every step, a tremor shook the ground. Lux knew Verde's ability to create tremors was one of the strongest in the tribe. The face of the cliff shook, and rocks tumbled into the abyss below. "This might be your way to cope, but its honestly disgusting!"

"Stop throwing a childish fit!" Lux yelled back. "I know something is amiss, and you soon will too." Verde looked up, snorted with disgust at Lux, and sent one last tremor into the earth. The sturdy oak tree next to them groaned, and the next thing they knew, it's quaking figure was falling towards them.

"Verde!" Lux dove towards the emerald dragon, and knocked her out of its path. She stood up shakily and reached to help Verde. She gasped in horror when she saw her cousin was knocked out cold, with her back legs trapped under the crushing weight of the tree.
