Chapter 3.
Azura knocked on the window of the pick-up truck. The mechanics had done a good job of replacing it. It had been broken when she arrived back at Norbury after fleeing from Scire. Not only that, all Lucas's stuff had been missing while her clothes and belongings were still present. After moving around for a week without purpose, she had ended up back in Greenwood and finally had the car window fixed a few days after her big return.
It felt strange, driving around with the car without Lucas accompanying her. Losing his stuff was another blow she did not take easy. She had been almost driven insane with the way she lost him, blaming herself for being foolish and she had a hard time controlling herself to barge back into Scire to save him. That would be the most foolish thing ever to do since she had no plan and no idea how to reverse the brainwashing they had done to him. So she had run when the opportunity showed itself leaving him behind with pain in her heart.
She had been staying in Greenwood for over a week now, but she made sure to keep out of everyone's way. Kaenan was the only exception. The boy seemed to be able to find her wherever she went and he didn't seem at all appalled at what had transpired. Even though Andreas had been glad she was back, Azura could feel he had a bit of trouble accepting her true strength now that she had actually tried to make him submit plus she felt herself grow agitated after spending some time with other people except Kaenan.
Trying to make Andreas submit was another mistake she had made. She had lost all control. She couldn't even see and recognize the Alpha. She only saw the Alpha and his two Beta's as a threat to Kaenan and she would do everything to protect him at that point. Reyna had submitted... Andreas was about to but Floyd had foolishly challenged her. If it hadn't been for Kaenan, the blood bath would have grown significantly.
"Azura? Why do you always walk the same route?" Kaenan held his camera tight as he broke into a jog to catch up to her. He joined her almost every day on her walks. Every day the same route. She knew Floyd was not far off as well. He always followed if he could, obviously not trusting her alone with Kaenan. For some reason, he always did keep his distance though. He had not engaged with her again after he had challenged her.
"I don't know, Kaenan. To think, to check the border. Maybe I'm looking for something, maybe I'm waiting for someone. I do it because I have no idea what else to do. It eases my mind, gives me something to do, allows me to make plans."
Maybe because you're lost.
She paused as the Phoenix spoke in her mind. Kaenan gave her a puzzled look, either because he had no idea what she was rambling about or because he did not understand why she had stopped. He looked around and took off the lens cover of the camera before pointing it at her and snapping a picture.
The flash made her flinch and she involuntarily clutched her left side of the stomach where the scar was. He had turned another direction to take another picture before she could even scold him for doing that. She couldn't blame him though, he had no idea what it did to her. When he was done he turned back to her and popped the lens cover back on.
"You're acting weird." Kaenan smiled at her innocently and she chuckled silently at seeing him act like a true kid again. It was always strange seeing an almost grown man act so pure. Even his movements sometimes still mimicked those of a child.
"I'm sorry, dear. Shall we move on?" Azura started walking again, this time with Kaenan next to her as he was not done talking.
"You're planning to find Lucas again? He was nice."
He'll come back. His part is not yet played out.
Azura stopped again and looked around, almost smelling the air while ignoring the voice in her head. "Yes... I am..." She absentmindedly answered Kaenan as she started jogging around as if looking for something. Her movements became more frantic as she picked up on something so faint but yet familiar.
"Kaenan, can you contact Floyd and ask him if he has smelled something while following us?" Kaenan stared at her dumbfounded as she asked him and she physically had to shake the boy to get him to react.
"Kaenan, I asked you something. Can you contact Floyd?" The boy nodded still a bit confused as if just finding out his brother had been following them.
Azura waited impatiently as Kaenan cocked his head to the side and a glassy gaze came across his eyes. She could smell something but it was hard to place and find the direction. She felt herself react strongly to it though as all off her senses seemed to be awakened when she took the first whiff of it.
"Floyd has smelled it too. I haven't though... What are you smelling?"
"Focus, Kaenan!" She interrupted him rudely as her impatience was growing. "What else did Floyd say?"
"Uhm, he is nearby, just a little to the east of us and he is tracking two people. How did you know he was following us?"
"No time, we have to find your brother right now. I'll race you!" She winked at Kaenan in the hopes he would take the bait and accept the challenge. It would get them there faster and he would be too occupied to ask more questions. When his face lit up with happiness she knew it had worked.
He took off running straight away. His connection with Floyd was probably still open, allowing him to exactly know where his brother was. Nora had tried to explain to her once how it worked but it was truly only a werewolf thing so Azura had eventually given up on understanding it. Kaenan probably had no clue about it as well and most likely used it without even realizing.
She followed him, letting him take the lead and she would occasionally make sure they were still going the right direction. He was actually fast. Much faster than she had anticipated but then again, seeing his physique, she knew he had been training and working out with the rest of the pack.
Just as she suspected, Floyd had not been far off. The familiar scent grew stronger as well and soon Azura and Kaenan found themselves in the same area where she had taken out the two snow leopards. The metallic smell of blood still faintly lingered around the area. In the middle near the creak was Floyd. He had his back to them but she was sure he knew they were there. In front of Floyd were two men on their knees, facing down to the ground.
"How did you know I was following you, Azura." Floyd kept his eyes on the two men before him as she stepped up next to him and stared at Killian and Zahair. She tried to keep a straight face as she looked down upon the two and hoped her voice didn't betray the fact she knew them. "Also, Azura, why did you ask for my help tracking these two down? You plan on murdering them as well?"
She couldn't help but notice the way Floyd kept saying her name in almost every sentence. He was overdoing it so much it was almost starting to sound denigrating. She noticed Killian move uncomfortably when Floyd mentioned the option of her murdering them. Zahair stayed still and submissive as he had taught himself over the years.
"Well, Floyd," She spat out his name to prove a point. "You're good at tracking and using your nose, just not as good of a stalker. I just tolerated you since I know you only want to protect Kaenan although you know damn well I manage pretty well on my own with that. And no, I don't plan to murder these two. I'm not a monster." She flashed him a twisted smile as he shot her a gnarling look.
Azura turned to the two men in front of her and Floyd. She wanted to hate them, she wanted to believe they had been involved in Marric's plan all along as it would actually give her a reason to hurt them. She had trusted them and it had backfired in the worst way possible. But she was not a hundred percent sure, especially not after the things Killian had told her and seeing how they were being treated. She needed to talk to them, hear them out first no matter how tempting it was to just dispose of them.
"Floyd, take Kaenan away from here. I need to talk to these two alone." Floyd let out a short laugh at her and scoffed back to her.
"So you do know them. They've asked about you so I was wondering if you knew them. And no, I'm not taking any orders from you and there is no way in hell I'm leaving you alone with these two. I know where that will end up and that is me and Reyna cleaning up the fucking mess you leave behind."
"Like you wouldn't have done the same thing." Azura didn't look at Floyd in the hope he would give up and move away, but he kept standing next to her.
He was agitating her but she could not show it nor give in. She focused on Killian and Zahair who silently sat before them, probably trying to make sense of this whole thing that was happening before them. Instead of bantering with Floyd some more, Azura decided it would be safest to stop talking to him altogether before she would explode.
"Killian, Zahair," She crossed her arms in front of her chest. "what the hell are you doing here. Haven't you done enough?"
It was the first moment Killian looked up, his desperate eyes meeting hers. Judging by the bruise on his face, Floyd had not just simply asked them to kneel down. Zahair kept staring at the ground, keeping his paralyzed face hidden from her.
"Azu, you really are alive! We had no idea... Marric... he... flipped. Said you had come back to life after being dead for almost two days. He went berserk! We couldn't stay, not after what he had done to you and to Lucas... We had no idea he would even try to do that to Lucas! Zahair... He believed him about meeting with the advisors. He had no idea!"
"Shut up... Just shut up, Killian!" Azura's voice skipped over as she lost herself for a moment.
She quickly took a step back and looked up to the sky taking in a few deep breaths to calm herself down. Her heart was thumping in her chest and she felt the need to give in to her rising madness. It wasn't the Phoenix's doing though, this was her own madness. Her own anger which the Phoenix happily feeded upon. It remained silent though, letting her take the decision on what to do.
"I need to hear this from you, Zahair. you're going to tell me in every detail what happened the moment you took Lucas away. You're done being silent and you're gonna talk." She had managed to stay in control as she tried to maintain a steady voice at all costs.
Floyd was smirking widely and stepped away. "This is gonna be fun." He muttered softly as he moved towards Kaenan. Azura shot him a glare so cold and deadly before flicking her hand in a strange gesture towards him while she felt the comforting heat flow through them. At his feet, a line of fire erupted out of nothing. The flames sprung up to about knee height before the vanished as quickly as they had appeared.
"Next time, they won't be in front of you but right underneath and a whole lot bigger so they don't tickle just your knees." Floyd's eyes had grown big as all his face seemed a few shades paler than it normal.
Kaenan quickly grabbed his hand and actually stepped forward as to shield Floyd from Azura. The corners of her lips tugged upwards slightly at the sight of Kaenan actually stepping up to defend his older brother. She didn't say anything to him but turned her attention back to Zahair and Killian, her smile melting away as if it never had been there. Both men stared at her in pure shock.
"You'd better start talking Zahair. I'm done with taking any bullshit for the day. What happened when you took Lucas?"
