The Borealis Mountains
The car takes a curved turn, and it heads up the mountains, following the road, and sticking close to the giant rock formations. A teenage girl looks up from her sketchpad, and out the window. Her earbuds connected to her MP3 player swing. Her pencil taps on the sketchbook. Her misty-brown hair is held back in a ponytail, and her blue eyes are distant in the world of unknown. She turns back to her sketchpad, and makes a few lines, then rubs her fingers on the lines, crating a realistic glowing effect. Her eyes close, as she imagines a girl, sitting in the sea, her eyes glazed over, staring at the sky, her glorious hair falling over her shoulders, and only her shoulders and head show in the water. The lines and shading she drew are the aurora borealis. She finishes the drawing with glimmer on the water, then signs her name. Flipping to the beginning of the notebook, she stares at her pictures, page by page. They all have an aurora in them. Some shows a girl, others show mountains with an army around them. One or two has the silhouette of a boy and a girl under the colorful sky. Some are colored, others are sketches. All are extremely realistic. One shows a diamond under the colorful lights in the sky. The diamond is the aurora. She is the diamond. This girls name is Aurora.
"These turns keep making me feel like we will tip!", said my driver, Miss Liah. I don't answer. I just keep looking out at the bottom of the mountain, which is a green and forest as far as the eye can see. Too far from the city, where all my friends are. Too far. That is my motto. Everything in life seems to far. My family, my friends, my home. My life. Everything is too far. The stars, the sky, everything. Nothing is close enough. I close my book and sigh. "Oh, come on. It's not that bad..." "Yes, it is! I have to start over for the tenth time this year! I have no family, no friends here, and the only person here that I know, is me! This tiny town is in the middle of nowhere, and everywhere I go, it's going to be the same looks of sympathy, and then I feel embarrassed! It's always the same!" "Look, I know it's hard for you, but you never seem to want the families we put you in." "And they never want me." "I think you'll find this family different. Mrs. Taron was my best friend in high school. We've kept in touch, and I have never met a better parent. I think you will like this family. Speaking of which, we should be there in about 15 minutes, so start picking up back there soon. Make sure you bring all your things this time. I don't want to have to drive back up again.", Miss Liah said with a smile. Her mood was contagious, and I gave her a small smile. "Is that a smile?! Ladies, and Gentlemen! We have just been given a smile! Notify the press! Tell the world! We have been given a smile!" I smiled even bigger, then thought of something. "Liah. Why are these mountains called the Borealis Mountains?" "That's because of the aurora borealis that frequently shows at night. I thought you would like that, Aurora. I happen to know you have never seen an aurora, other than yourself." I smiled again, this time from excitement. I was going to see why I was named after the colorful lights in the sky. And maybe I would feel my parents with me. I'm going to see an aurora.
