"The Sackville-Bagginses were not forgotten"
"Listening to the news"
"They were looking at her with their black button eyes"
Ophelia Verona turned her head to the side when she began to hear the voices. Voices she hasn't heard in a long time.
"Come, Mr. Frodo! I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you and it as well. So up you get!"
"Listening to the news! Again?"
"Into the woods then out of the woods–"
She closed her eyes and took in a deep steady breath, only for it to become shaky halfway through and she bit down on her bottom lip. The voices got slightly louder and began to overlap one another.
"Winnie-the-Pooh sat down at the foot of the tree, put his head between his paws–"
"–Lord Tywin Lannister, the Hand of the King–"
"Well, it changes every day, you see"
"He musstn't hurt Preciouss"
Ophelia let out a shaky breath, eyes still closed and she whimpered in pain. Her breathing began to get ragged and tears pooled the corners of her eyes. "Stop" she whispered but the voices didn't stop.
"And home before it's dark!"
"–and began to think"
"A brother of the Night's Watch shouldn't be so scared"
"The Eagles are coming!"
"You won't see the Once-ler. Don't knock at his door"
"Stop, stop, stop!" Ophelia clamped her hands over her ears to try to block out the dismembered voices but they only grew louder, and faster and the overlapping voices became too much.
"–abomination, shame of my flesh!"
"Spiders made Coraline intensely uncomfortable"
"–this is the END. I am going. I am leaving NOW. GOOD-BYE!"
"GANDALF GREYHAME!"
"AND FIRE CLEANSES"
"WHEN HORTON THE ELEPHANT HEARD A SMALL NOISE"
"Go away" Ophelia cried. "Go away!" It's been some time since she's heard the voices. She doesn't have any books in the apartment but Romeo does, he has them hidden but those books don't put her in this much distress. Maybe it has to do with the fact that she's been reading. Reading after all these years might've reactivated her Silvertongue magic.
The voices made their way through her hands and down her ear canal where the voices just got louder and more rushed. She tried hard to keep the tears at bay, the last thing she wants to do is cry in front of the avengers who are now starting to turn their attention to her. They've all been on the helicarrier for maybe 20 minutes, Ophelia was with Juliet making sure she's alright, Romeo and Wade (who's still in his suit) were also with them. In those 20 minutes the voices made their way to Ophelia and as she tried to get away from them, she had wandered away from her small group and now stood off to the side where she attracted the attention of the Avengers. Probably the last thing she needs right now.
"Hey, kid, are you alright?" Tony asked but she didn't answer. She can't hear anything aside from the voices of the books.
Romeo leaped into action, he already knows what's happening to his friend. He ran to her side, gently helped her take her backpack off, unzipped it and reached inside for her pills. The voices are coming from inside the backpack, all the books that are in there, the books they used in Sokovia. They would've used the tablets Tony got them day 1 of their arrival, but they accidentally broke them in the salvage yard and so they had to use books, and since Ophelia hasn't cleaned out that backpack in years, they were in luck when they found them.
Romeo pulled out the orange pill bottle, the last few white pills rattling in the bottom. He popped the lid off and poured the last two pills in Ophelia's mouth, he then handed her a water bottle and she took it and swallowed down the pills as if they're some sort of candy. Her eyes darted to Romeo, silently thanking him, but her attention was pulled back to the voices that are spiraling around her head driving her crazy and all she wants to do is scream at the top of her lungs and...and...she just wants it to stop. To all stop.
"Is she okay?" Bruce softly asked. Ophelia is now sitting on the floor, her back against the wall and her hands are back over her ears and she's whispering-- begging the voices to be quiet.
"She will be" Romeo nodded. "All the reading, it got to her" Wade and Juliet sat with Ophelia. One of the ways to get a Silvertongue to mute the voices is by having someone talking to them. The voices of people around them can block out the voices of the books. So them talking to her can help ease her pain a little.
Romeo walked back to the group with Bruce, the backpack still in his hands. Hopefully having it at a distance will make the voices fade away.
"Is she going to be okay?" Steve asked Romeo.
"Yeah" he nodded. "It's just the voices"
"Because that doesn't make it sound like schizophrenia" Tony mumbled under his breath.
"What voices?" Vision asked.
"Right, uh," Vision is new to the group, and so are Pietro and Wanda, so they don't know that they can hear books. Which is weird taken out of context. "Since we can bring stories to life we can also hear books, it's whispers, and it can be any kind of voice and– it's like an audiobook but in whisper version but sometimes they can get loud and overwhelming"
"But, I gave you guys tablets so you can read from there. Why did you use books?" Tony spoke.
"Yeah, about that" Romeo sheepishly began "we kinda accidentally broke them in the salvage yard" Tony gasped and stood straight, ready to say something but Romeo continued "it wasn't our fault! It was them!" He pointed at the Maximoff twins "that one pushed us while he zoomed around and the other one tried to mess with our heads! We were being shot at! If I get ptsd I'm suing!"
"You can't sue someone for giving you ptsd" Natasha said. "Can you?"
"Well, I have one hell of a lawyer. So maybe I can!"
"Hey, Romeo Montague!" Wade called as he approached the group. He glanced over his shoulder where Ophelia is calmer and taking deep steady breaths, Juliet is coughing and sneezing. "Ophelia is calmer but Juliet seems sicker. She has this sneezing and coughing combo going on. I say give her some NyQuil to knock her out, maybe slip some to Ophelia"
Romeo sighed and handed the man the small backpack "pretty sure Philly got some of TJ's meds. Here, look for them. I gotta call Tristan and ask him if he can pick up a refill for Philly" with that, he walked away as he pulled his phone out, already tapping on the screen.
"Who's Tristan?" Thor questioned.
"The detective cousin" Wade answered before digging through the backpack for Juliet's meds.
When the Avengers realized that everything with Ophelia and Juliet is in order, they dispersed and went to check on the citizens of Sokovia. They're all on board and will be for a couple more hours. Romeo and Ophelia saved Sokovia. They safely placed the floating city back in its place, destroyed buildings are being fixed, cracks on the roads are being filled, houses are being rebuilt, everything in Sokovia is being fixed and rebuilt by little helpers that Romeo and Ophelia read out. The civilians that were under the floating rock were protected and saved by the domes around them. No casualties or destroyed buildings, not even a broken window. Romeo protected them before the city began to fly.
Clint is the only one who was left behind with Wade, the man was in his own world and it wasn't until he heard a stainless steel water bottle smack against the floor, that he was pulled out of his trance and brought back to the real world. "What? What happened? I wasn't listening!" He looked around for his friends but didn't see them, only Ophelia and Juliet sitting on the floor and Wade standing in front of him. "What's going on?"
"Oh" Wade dropped the water bottle back in the bag and stared at Clint, the eyes on his mask wide and maybe a little alarmed. "Okay, let's see" he said to himself before he cleared his throat, cracked his knuckles and brought his hands up and began to sign, informing him of what he missed.
Clint stared at Wade in confusion, tilting his head to the side and squinting his eyes. He doesn't understand what Wade is saying and he's not sure why he's signing. Is he hard of hearing? "Sorry man, never learned sign language" he apologetically said and offered him a small smile before walking away.
Wade dropped his arms to his side and stood in place for a second as confusion washed over him. He then pulled out a Hawkeye comic, seemingly out of nowhere, and rifled through it as he tried to get his facts right. Suddenly he looked up and said, "those motherfuckers!"
