017 ↠ Unstable Silvertongue
(Guess who's back, back again)
Steve is talking, that much is clear, but Ophelia isn't paying attention. Her mind is loud and buzzing with static, like when old televisions don't get a signal and the screen is a buzzing white. Her mind is like that, filled with snow. Steve's pep talk is nothing more but muffled background noise and it's doing nothing to reach Ophelia.
She sat in a nook in the quinjet where she's trying to hide but with no success. Her eyes are trained on the leather-bound book in her hands. The book that belongs to her. She's not sure why she grabbed it before they left her home, but she did and all she can do is stare at it as her voice echoes through her head.
"Please don't make me do this. Anything but that"
The stress in the atmosphere is palpable. Everyone is downcast and thinking of the upcoming battle with Ultron, wondering what he has in store now that he has a Silvertongue, worrying about their teammate, and the people of Sokovia.
No one is more worried than Ophelia, of course. Her sister was taken from their home so Ultron can make Juliet read whatever he wants to keep the Avengers away. Ophelia's not sure why she's calm. Given her attitude she would be yelling at the people there, cursing them and telling them what they're going to die of, but she's not. She's passed angry that she's now a calm angry. Something Bruce Banner seems to know about.
She doesn't care what the others do. All she wants is to save her sister.
"...Ophelia....Ophelia..." Steve's muffled voice in Ophelia's head is slowly getting closer and clearer. Still, she kept her focus on the book "Ophelia" Steve said a little louder. Thor, who stood across from Ophelia, reached over and gently placed his hand on her shoulder to get her attention.
Ophelia snapped out of her thoughts and looked up at Thor then at the rest of the group who are now staring at her.
"Are you alright?" Steve asked her.
"What?" It took her a second to register that he's talking to her "yeah" she nodded "yeah, I'm..." She wanted to say she's fine but that would be a lie. She's not fine, she's the opposite of fine. She just doesn't know how to say it or if they would actually care.
But why would they care? Ophelia thought, I met them three days ago.
Deciding not to get in any kind of argument, Ophelia took in a deep breath to clear her head "you wanted my attention?" She looked up at Steve.
"Ultron has your sister, and if he hasn't yet- will more than likely force her to read. We don't know what he'll make her read but to prepare ourselves, is there anything you can tell us about her?" Steve asked Ophelia.
"Um..." she passed a hand through her hair and nervously scratched the back of her head "reading is not her strong suit. It's uh...it's... it's messy" she went straight to the point "its chaos. It's controlled chaos. If she's emotional, its a mess. But she's sick so it'll probably be a little less messy"
"Well that's reassuring" Tony sarcastically said.
"So if she reads something out, how do we get it under control?" Clint asked.
"There's the water pressure method" Ophelia began, but she knew that's not really going to be an option "they can be read back to their stories or be touched by their book. Thing is, Juliet's book is gone"
The group was quiet and confused for a minute "and that means?" Vision inquired.
"Really no big difference, but since her book are her own stories, then using another book to send whatever she reads back in the book won't work" Ophelia explained.
"I'm lost" Pietro admitted.
"I don't think that made sense" Clint informed. They didn't understand what Ophelia said and they're pretty sure she didn't understood herself either.
Ophelia sighed. Some things need time to be explained, time which they don't have. So instead of explaining, she set her book down and grabbed her small backpack. She noticed that it's unzipped and she wondered when she opened it, but pushed the thought aside and reached in, her whole arm inside the bag.
The group's eyes went wide when they saw Ophelia's whole arm disappear in the bag.
"What sorcery?" Thor began.
"My girl, Hermione Granger" Ophelia breathed out before she pulled her arm out, a smile on her face. She pulled out several small pocket-sized books, ones that can fit in a pocket of someone's jeans or jacket. "These little books will help you guys" she stood up and placed the books on the small table in the center on the quinjet.
Steve reached out for one and opened it, quickly leafing through it "it's blank" he noted.
Bruce grabbed one and did the same thing "so is this one"
"They're all blank" Ophelia informed as the group all grabbed a small black book "I'm gonna skip a lesson here and go straight to the point...these little books will help you guys- normal reading people- to put live stories back in a book"
"I didn't know you can do that" Romeo admitted.
"Lesson number...I don't know what lesson number this is" Ophelia shook her head with a shrug of her shoulders.
"How do we do it, exactly?" Bruce curiously asked.
"Touch them with the book and they'll be inside. You can throw it at them if you want, like a frisbee. It'll come back to you. They're enchanted, that's how they work for non-Silvertongues"
Ophelia looked down at the table and saw a couple of books still there. She looked up and glanced at everyone's hands to make sure they have one. They all do with the exception of Romeo "here" she handed him a book "they work for us too. In case you panic or something, just throw it at them" he took it with a smile.
"Whoever rescues Natasha, give her one, explain to her" Ophelia set a small book aside for Natasha "Wade needs one. Where's- where is he?" She turned in place once she realized that she hasn't seen Wade since they boarded the quinjet. The others began to look as well.
"I saw him get in" Wanda said.
"I swear if that merc bailed out, then I'll-" Ophelia began to threaten as she turned to her backpack but Wade's masked head popped out from the bag. The young woman felt her heart leap out of her chest "what the fuck are you doing in there?!"
"Please watch your language around Steve" Tony smirked. Steve sighed and rolled his eyes.
"I was going through your stuff" Wade told Ophelia "it's really cool in here, like a house with secrets"
Ophelia shook her head and handed him a book "here, it captures live stories. Go back to whatever you were doing" she pushed Wade's head back inside her backpack.
"Wait! Here" he pulled out her pills and shook the bottle, the remaining pills rattling inside "for your headaches" He gave her a thumbs up before disappearing.
"He's...interesting" Bruce frowned in confusion.
"I want to go in there" Clint kept his eyes on the small black backpack.
There was a beeping and Tony turned to the front of the quinjet, he looked down at a monitor and tapped something "we'll be there in three minutes!" he announced.
That seemed to catch everyone's attention and their focus turned back to the matter at hand. Ophelia sighed and took two small white pills.
♔
"Before I met you guys, I've never even heard of Sokovia before. So forgive me if this sounds ignorant, but, is it always this windy?" Romeo asked over the howling of the wind.
Once they landed, they fought against the wind and divided up to find their missing people and get the people of Sokovia to safety. While Romeo joined the main group out in the city, Ophelia joined Tony in search for Ultron, because he will most likely have Juliet with him.
"Not, really. No" Pietro's voice was heard through the comms.
"I actually don't think it's ever been this windy before" Wanda inputted.
"The trees look like they're about to rip from the ground, and I swear I just saw a building sway" Clint informed.
While the Avengers were discussing the weather conditions as they got people to safety, Tony and Ophelia headed toward the church. She took to the ground while Tony took to the sky. The wind is picking up speed, her hair hitting her face, still she continued walking. Her eyes scanned her surroundings, the area around the church is rubble, there's really no people around considering that the citizens are being taken to safety.
A particularly strong gust of wind hit the young woman. The faint screams in her dream came back to haunt her, she can almost hear the voices carried by the wind. A shiver ran down her spine and she looked up to a not so strange sight.
"Oh no" she breathed out as her eyes followed the black letters floating through the air "crap, shit, crap!"
"Watch your language!" Tony warned over the comms.
Ophelia ignored Tony's comment and ran up the crumbling church. The strong wind hit her and she put her hand out over her face to cover her eyes. She looked down at her feet to see where she's stepping and then looked back up, more words floating around the deteriorating church.
"Juliet!" Ophelia called out for her sister but she's not sure she'll be heard over the wind. Still, she called out her name "Juliet!"
"Ophie?" Juliet's muffled voice was heard through the wind. Ophelia's heart skipped a beat at the sound of her sister's voice.
"Julie!" She looked around in search for Juliet but didn't see her. All she saw are holes everywhere, rocks and words floating in the air. Before Ophelia could move any further, Iron Man flew in from the hole in the roof and landed on the uneven ground.
"Come to confess your sins?" Ultron ominously asked from the dark. Ophelia's eyes widened in slight fear and looked around trying to locate the robot.
"I don't know, how much time you got?" Tony replied.
"More than you" Ultron emerged from the dark, much taller and larger. He has Juliet with him. The young woman's eyes are wide with fear, her cheeks are red and puffy as is the tip of her nose. Her hair is messy and stuck to her forehead. She's biting down her bottom lip to stop the trembling and she's holding her book.
Juliet Verona is sick and scared.
"Juliet!" Ophelia went to run and grab her as did Juliet, but they were both held back. Ultron grabbed Juliet rather forcefully and pulled her back, she whimpered at the action and tears sprung to her already red eyes. Ophelia was held back by Tony and she tried to get his hand off her but he wouldn't budge. He can't let her get hurt.
"I'm sorry" Juliet whispered, her words carried by the wind and Ophelia heard them "he made me read. He said he was going to hurt me– he was going to hurt you" her eyes glued to a scared and angry Ophelia.
"It's okay" she whispered back, her voice also carried in the wind for Juliet to hear "it's okay. I'm going to get you, okay?"
While the Verona sisters whispered to each other, Tony talked to Ultron, the two oblivious to the girls.
"Uh, have you been juicing? Little vibration cocktail? You're looking- I don't want to say 'puffy'-" Tony began to tell Ultron.
"You're stalling to protect the people" Ultron interrupted.
"Well, that is the mission. Did you forget?" Tony reminded.
"I've moved beyond your mission. I'm free" there was a loud rumbling when something emerged from the ground, bringing up dust and rocks "what, you thought you were the only one stalling?"
Ophelia dared herself to take her eyes off her sister and curiously eyed the vibranium made object sticking from the ground. Tony's suit analyzed the situation.
"This is how you end, Tony. This is peace in my time" Ultron continued.
A strong wind swept through the church and Ophelia's brown hair was caught in the wind. She looked up and stared straight through the deteriorating ceiling, the screams of the people in the city carried through the wind. An army of robots came out from the water and began to attack everyone in the city. The wind is still going strong and her heart went out to Juliet. She's not the best Silvertongue but Ultron doesn't care. As long as he gets what he wants, that's all that matters to him. Iron Man flew out to protect and attack, but Ophelia stayed at the church.
She turned around and glanced at her sister to make sure she's alright before looking up at Ultron "let her go" she firmly said.
"No" he answered.
"Listen, robot, Juliet is in no condition to be outside, much less reading. She's sick, she has a cold"
"She'll get better" Ultron said "humans do that"
"Let her go" she repeated herself but this time more softly "please"
"This is adorable" Ultron noted "it really is, but I'm keeping her"
"I'm not an object you can keep!" Juliet spat and pulled her arm out of Ultron's grasp. She was free for a second before Ultron grabbed her again "no, let me go!" She pulled her arm but couldn't shake him off.
"Let her go!" Ophelia took a step closer to them, her hair whipping around her as the wind continued, she caught the sound of the zipper of her small backpack "let her go, please"
"And why should I? She can bring things to life by reading" Ultron said.
"So can I" she informed. Ultron already knows this, he went through the file S.H.I.E.L.D. has on her even though she never joined until Fury and Hill went to her home and practically dragged her out.
"Ophelia, what are you doing?" Romeo's voice was heard in her ear. She ignored him and continued talking to Ultron.
"Juliet can't read. It's not her thing. Her reading is unstable. She has a cold, it doesn't mean it'll be any better. You see those words floating around?" Ophelia pointed at the words flying around them "it means it's half read. Whatever you told her to read, it didn't come out completely. You're trying to get wind? You'll never get complete wind. Sure it's strong but it's because it's unstable. If you don't get it under control-" she came to an abrupt stop and chose her words carefully "you don't want to know what out of control wind will do"
"So what I'm hearing here is an exchange" Ultron spoke up "if I let your sister go, you'll do the reading for me"
"Don't" Juliet shook her head.
"Yes" Ophelia answered Ultron's question.
"How about if I keep you both? It never hurt to have an extra" Ultron pondered.
"No" she shook her head "no. Let her go. Let Juliet go" Ophelia took a step closer to them and Ultron tightened his grip on Juliet's arm and she winced and whimpered in pain. Ophelia saw and stayed put "please don't hurt her. Please. Let her go and you can have me. You can have me. Just let her go, please"
"Ophelia, stop what you're doing" Steve warned.
"Stop, Ophie" Juliet pleaded "don't do it"
The older Verona sister felt a tap on the back of her head. Tears sprung to her eyes and she stared at her sister for a couple of seconds before looking up at Ultron. She brought her hands together and slowly got on her knees. Juliet's eyes went wide and Ultron stood still, eyeing the kneeling woman.
"Please" Ophelia begged, her eyes flicking over to Juliet so she understands. She gave a slight nod "please, don't hurt my sister"
At that moment, Juliet threw herself on the ground confusing Ultron. Ophelia also threw herself to the ground and Wade, in his Deadpool outfit, jumped out of the backpack with his katanas in his hands.
"I bet you didn't see that coming, huh?" Wade smiled under his mask "sorry, is that trademarked? I feel like it should be"
"Who are you?" Ultron asked Wade.
The man set his sight on the robot in front of him and his eyes widened "who the fuck gave Siri a body?"
"Oh my god" someone sighed in the comms.
Ophelia wasted no time and scrambled to get up. She ran to her sister and grabbed her arm, pulling her up. Juliet kept her book close to her as she stood up and ran with Ophelia. Ultron saw them running and went to go after them but Wade blocked his path. The robot flew over him but Vision swooped in and held him back.
Ophelia and Juliet Verona ran out of the church and away from it. Once they put distance between themselves and the building, they came to an abrupt stop and Ophelia hugged her little sister, both of them on the verge of tears.
"I got you" Ophelia whispered "I got you. You're okay"
"I'm sorry" Juliet wrapped her arms around Ophelia, tears running down her face "he made me do it. I'm sorry"
"It's okay. It's not your fault. It's okay, Julie. I got you. I'm not letting you go"
"Wow, soft Ophelia. Not sure how to feel about that" Tony mused.
"I hope a house falls on you"
