009 ↠ A Brief History of Time
Ophelia Verona wasn't sure what to expect when she joined the Avengers, perhaps immediately jump into action, or some sort of right of passage, but she never expected for them to look through boxes and boxes of papers.
She's not exactly sure what they're looking for, but they explained to Romeo and Ophelia with more detail and finally, after many explanations, they finally understand what's going on.
So as the whole group searched through boxes of papers, they talked and wanted to know more about Ophelia and Romeo's abilities. The young woman had gotten bored of paper searching and pulled out the magic eight ball and shook it around.
"How does it work?" Bruce asked Ophelia who sat on top of a table near him.
"Pretty straightforward. You ask it a question, you shake it and it gives you an answer" Ophelia looked up at the man.
"I meant the reading" he corrected.
"Oh" she looked back down at the ball in her hands "I read something out loud and it comes alive. That's it"
"You can read anything? Directions? Do the arrows pop up and point you the way you're suppose to go?" Tony asked with a smile.
"Cookbooks? Do the ingredients pop out or the prepared dish?" Clint added.
"What about warning labels?" Natasha continued.
Ophelia didn't know whether to roll her eyes or smack all of them over the head. Maybe both. It's one thing to be curious, but another thing to be stupid. She shouldn't be angry. They are genuinely curious and didn't know such thing existed, but Ophelia hates it. Hates talking about it, hates using it. She hates being a Silvertongue.
"Maybe. I don't know. I can't do that" she shrugged.
"Maybe?" Steve questioned.
Ophelia sighed deeply and passed a hand through her hair. Now is one of those times she has to do something she hates.
"I'm a Silvertongue"
"I thought you said you're Italian?" Steve was confused.
"Isn't that a vine?" Romeo asked.
"Oh my god" Ophelia looked down and shook her head "yes, Steve, I'm Italian. I was born and raised in Florence, Italy. Now, Silvertongue is a person who can bring stories to life when they read out loud. But its a bit more complicated than that"
"How so?" Thor asked.
"It's an inherited ability but not everyone in the family inherits it. My great aunt Eulalie for example, she can't bring stories to life but she's the fastest reader I know. Her brother, my grandpa, can bring stories to life. My mom inherited the ability and I inherited as well. It's... I don't want to say evolving, but it kinda is"
"For example," Romeo spoke up from a chair he sat on "I can read out comic books but Ophelia can't"
Ophelia furrowed her eyebrows and stared at Romeo in confusion "since when can you read out comic books?"
"A couple months now"
"What?" She whispered in confusion.
She remembers since the day they met, Romeo was curious about reading out comic books. She immediately shut him down because comic books are illustrations and dialogue, there's no description. But new skills develop and reading out comic books could be possible.
"Of course, Men in Black" Ophelia shook her head.
"You know me so well" Romeo grinned.
"Men in Black? The movie?" Tony asked.
"Hey, did the Men in Black come and flash you with that thing?" Romeo asked the group.
"You watch too many movies" Tony told him.
"Why are they called Silvertongue?" Thor asked Ophelia.
She shrugged and shook the magic eight ball "I don't know. My grandpa calls them that"
"So were you like five and reading out Green Eggs and Ham?" Natasha asked Ophelia. The others chuckled.
"No" Ophelia shook her head "it happens in your teenage years. Twelve is the youngest. I was twelve when it happened"
"I must've been a late bloomer, then. I was twenty" Romeo spoke up.
"Yeah. It can happen" Ophelia nodded "and there aren't actually any signs to point out that you'll become a Silvertongue– no actually there is! The voices, their voices"
"Whose voices?" Clint asked.
"The books"
"You can hear books?" Steve quirked an eyebrow.
"Yeah. Can I ask who's reading A Brief History of Time? It's depressing, its making me question my reality" Romeo looked around the room.
"The only nerd who would read that is Bruce" Natasha looked up at the man.
"How do you know...?" Bruce asked Romeo.
"I can hear it"
Heads turned to Ophelia and she nodded, agreeing with Romeo. While Bruce went to retrieve his book from the other end of the room, Ophelia grabbed her small backpack and took a small white pill from the bottle. She took it with water and set her backpack aside.
"Are we done with the questions? I don't really like talking about this" Ophelia rubbed her hands on her thighs.
"I just have one question" Tony looked up from a computer he's using to set up the tablets for Romeo and Ophelia "what type of books do you need?"

The file searching continued and more boxes were pulled out. Papers and folders all around the place. Ophelia sucked on handy as she pulled out a folder from a box and quickly skimmed through the pages. She tossed the folder to the side and grabbed another one and quickly did the same to it.
She rolled the hard candy on her tongue and felt eyes on her as she tossed another folder "I feel like I'm being judged right now" she looked up and stared into Natasha's eyes.
"Are you even reading the papers?" She asked her.
Ophelia sighed and looked back done and pulled another folder "all Silvertongues are quick readers" she quickly explained.
Ophelia wasn't the only one tossing folders to the side. Thor only seemed to be picking them up and throwing them across the room.
"Baron Strucker had a lot of friends" Steve commented as he opened a folder.
"Well, all these people are horrible" Bruce commented.
"Wait, I know that guy" Tony pointed at the open folder in Bruce's hand. He took it and Steve who is near him, took a look at the folder "from back in the day. He operates off the African Coast, black market arms" Steve stared at him in a stern disbelieving way "there are conventions, alright. You meet people. I didn't sell him anything" he quickly defended himself.
"What kind of conventions are that? How do they even advertise that sort of stuff?" Romeo questioned from the chair he sat on.
"They put up banners that read Black market dealers, welcome" Ophelia joked from the end of the table.
Tony handed Thor the pictures of the man, Steve and Clint leaned closer.
"He was talking about finding something new. A game changer, it was all very ahab" Tony explained.
"This?" Thor pointed at a marking on the man's neck.
"Uh, that's a tattoo. I don't think he had it" Tony answered.
"No, those are tattoos. This is a brand" Thor pointed out.
At that point Bruce had moved to the computer behind Ophelia and searched up the brand on the man's neck. The computer beeped when it found a match.
"Oh yeah, it's a word in an African dialect meaning 'thief', in a much less friendly way" Bruce informed.
"What dialect?" Steve asked.
"Wakanada– Wa– Wa– Wakanda" he corrected himself.
Tony turned to Steve "if this guy got out of Wakanda with other trade goods" he said in a low voice.
"I thought your father said he got the last of it" Steve told Tony.
"I don't follow" Bruce stood up and walked back to the table "what comes out of Wakanda?"
"The strongest metal on earth" Steve glanced back at his shield "where is this guy now?" He turned to Tony.
"I don't know. I don't keep track of people I meet" Tony answered with a shrug.
"Who even is this man?" Ophelia jumped off the seat and walked over to Thor who is still holding the picture. He gave her the picture and she looked down at it "Son. Of. A. Bitch" she slowly breathed out.
"You know this guy!?" Tony exclaimed.
Romeo walked over to Ophelia and looked down at the picture "Ulysses Klaue. Who knew?"
"How do two kids know a black market dealer?" Clint asked the duo.
"How does this even make sense?" Natasha asked.
"How do you know him?" Thor continued.
"How?" Steve continued to press.
"I have a friend," Ophelia began "he can tell us where he is" she set the picture down, pulled her phone out from the back pocket of her jeans and walked out of the room as she scrolled through her contacts.
Once Ophelia was gone, all heads turned to Romeo.
"Care to explain?" Tony asked the young man.
"I don't wanna"
