001 ↠ Middle Earth showdown

"Lower your arms, relax...lift the bow just a little bit more...your feet, they're in the right position. You may let go"

Ophelia let go and watched the arrow fly through the air. It didn't whistle through the air, it didn't make a sound, it was fast and silent, just as he taught her. The arrow hit the target, not the center and not too to the side. It was a hit in between the center and the edge.

Ophelia frowned and lowered her arms.

"Well...at least you hit it" the dark haired man said.

"Don't listen to him. You are doing great, Ophelia, you will get there soon. Now grab another arrow and try it again"

Ophelia sighed but followed the orders. She pulled another arrow from the quiver, lined it up in the bow, got in the correct stance and once she aimed it she let go. The arrow flew through the air and it hit the target, the arrow two inches from the one she previously shot.

"Do that again. I didn't see it " the dark haired man said. Ophelia sent him a glare before stomping to retrieve the arrows she shot. Arrows stuck on the targets, the grass, and others sticking out of shrubs.

"How's the archery coming along?" William, Ophelia's grandfather, asked the trio as he walked towards them.

"It's coming" the dark haired man nodded.

"I suck!" Ophelia cried "and Aragorn isn't making it any better with his commentary" she pointed a finger at the dark haired man sitting on a bench.

"They're observations" he corrected.

"Observations" Ophelia scoffed and continued to collect arrows "Legolas doesn't make those observations when you're teaching me"

"That's because Legolas only knows how to use the bow and arrow" Aragorn replied.

Ophelia gasped "ooh, Legolas, you're going to let Aragorn talk to you like that?"

The silver haired elf narrowed his eyes at his friend and began to have a playful banter with Aragorn.

"Ophelia" William sighed and shook his head "why must you cause trouble like this?"

"It's a Middle Earth showdown, Poe. Those are great!" Ophelia told her grandfather.

William couldn't help but smile at his granddaughters comment. She's always trying to start something between the Middle Earth people. It may be just playful banter and she knows they do it to amuse her, but she still likes to see Middle Earth showdowns.

William, or Poe, as Ophelia calls him, put a stop to Legolas and Aragorn's banter. Ophelia frowned and set the arrows back in the quiver. She frowned even more when she saw her grandfather pull out the Lord of the Rings book.

"I'm sorry, Opie, but you have to go back to your studies and they have to go back and save Middle Earth" William told his granddaughter.

"But they already saved it!"

"Yes, but they still have to go back. Don't worry, you can read them out tomorrow to continue your lessons"

Ophelia sighed "fine"

The thing that always made Ophelia sad was the fact that whoever she read out she would have to return to their book. She enjoys spending time with the characters, they teach her things from their world and she teaches them things from her world.

Shen enjoys talking with them. And even though she knows their stories and has read them over and over, she enjoys listening to them. Reading and listening are two different things and Ophelia enjoys but very much.

Ophelia said a quick bye to Aragorn and Legolas, telling them that she will be reading them out soon to continue the lessons. William opened the book and held it out for the man and elf to touch. They did so and soon they were back in the book. Ophelia sighed and picked up the bow and quiver.

"I'm sorry, Opie"

"It's okay. I understand" she nodded "I think"

"You think?"

"No, I understand why they have to go back, but...there's a lot I don't understand" Ophelia admitted.

"It's alright, that's why your mother and I are here to teach you. Besides, you've had this gift for a year. You are thirteen and there is still much for you to learn and understand" William explained.

"Well I don't understand how Legolas gave me his bow. Doesn't he need it back in Middle Earth?" Ophelia asked her grandfather.

William sat on the bench where Aragorn previously sat and Ophelia sat next to her grandfather.

"Well you see, Legolas' story is already written. The books are done. No matter what you do, you can't change the story"

"Yes but, how is Legolas going to fight the orcs if he gave me his bow?"

"Well first off the bow he gave you was the one he had at the beginning. The bow he had from Mirkwood" William explained.

"And he doesn't use that one anymore because Lady Galadriel gave him the bow of Galadhrim" Ophelia continued.

William nodded "that's right. But just because he gave you his first bow, doesn't mean it's no longer in the book. You may have it here, but it will always exist in the book. Do you understand?"

Ophelia squinted her eyes as she tried to understand what he grandfather told her "I think so"

William smiled and decided to give her a clearer example "alright, how about this? Let's say you read out the bow of Galadhrim, the story won't change because of that. It won't affect the battles Legolas is fighting, it won't kill off Legolas because he no longer has his weapon. What you read out won't change the outcome of the story because whatever happens in the story will always be that. You don't have the power to change the story, only the author. And seeing that J.R.R. Tolkien is dead, then I don't see Lord of the Rings changing at all"

Ophelia was quiet for a minute as she let it sink in. She processed the information and looked down at the bow Legolas gave her when they began their archery training a couple weeks back.

"So let's say I read out Harry Potter's cloak of invisibility" Ophelia began "will it affect future books?"

"No" William shook his head.

"Why? The fifth book is coming out next month" Ophelia pointed out "it's still an ongoing series"

"Yes, but like I said, the author is the only one with the power to change the books. We're Silvertongue's, Opie, we read things out, we don't change the stories. We can't change the stories" William told Ophelia.

"Hmm, okay, so let's say I read out the Hippogriff while Harry is on it, flying. Harry won't plunge to his death, right?"

William shook his head "no"

"Oh, okay" Ophelia nodded once she understood it. But she may understand that concept, there's still things she doesn't understand about the gift and being a Silvertongue "Poe?"

"Yes?"

Ophelia debated with herself on whether to ask the question. It may be a stupid question but she doesn't want her grandfather to think that about her. She doesn't want him to believe she doesn't understand her gift but like he said, she's only had it for a year and there's still much for her to learn and understand.

"Never mind" she mumbled under her breath and looked down at the green grass.

"It's okay Opie, if you have a question just ask. There's no such thing as a stupid question" William assured her.

As if on cue, a male voice yelled from inside the house "Does anyone know what's in mango salsa?"

Ophelia snorted when she heard her brother ask that and suddenly felt better about her own question.

"I stand corrected"

Quick note, I have absolutely no idea how old the Maximoff twins are in Age of Ultron but I always pictured them to be in their early twenties, like 23 or 24. So that's how old they'll be in this story. Their early 20s.
