The Child in the House

Meanwhile the Doctor was walking down his hallway and scanning as he went. He had detect nothing behind the smooth walls. When he came to the end of the hallway and saw the door to an elevator, he walked forward and pressed the up button, he waited while it dinged from floor to floor until it arrived where the Doctor was and the door opened. The Doctor walked onto the elevator and scanned the interior as the door closed behind him and the elevator began moving. Detecting nothing he stood, listening to the elevator music. The elevator, with a surprising jolt, knocked the Doctor down. As he stood back up he noticed something scratched into the metal on wall of the elevator. It looked like writing but it was too small to read. The Doctor rummaged around in his pocket and pulled out a large magnifying glass. He held the magnifying glass close to the writing. The words, written in blue graffiti, read, "Weeping Angels in the midst."

"Ah yes, I had forgotten about the angels, I wonder how they got us here."

The elevator door opened at level 9 and the Doctor put his magnifying glass away. To his surprise, level 9 was a dark library. Nobody seemed to be present. He then pushed the elevator button for level 10 and the elevator door closed, heading to level 10.

As the elevator went up, the music stopped playing and a boy's voice could be heard through the speakers, saying, "Mummy? Mummy? Mummy, is that you? Mummy...?" The Doctor scanned the speakers with his sonic screwdriver until the elevator door opened. Level 10 appeared to be the inside of a house from the World War II era (the same house as in "The Empty Child"). The Doctor put his screwdriver away and slowly walked out of the elevator.

As Clara walked down the hallway, the light began to flicker and then stop. At the end of the hallway, she noticed a painting with a weeping angel covering its eyes. The lights then started flickering again.

Clara stared at the angel in the painting in confusion. "But you're part of a painting. How can you be turning off the lights?" As she said this, the flickering was more constant. Clara began to back away when she saw that the angel was moving toward her from inside the painting.

The Doctor, inside the house, walked up the stairs into a bedroom. He walked around the room, scanning it with his screwdriver. He walked toward a closet door and opened it. The closet was completely empty. He walked into the closet and put his screwdriver in his pocket and then began searching the wall of the closet.

In the hallway, Clara, her eyes transfixed on the angel in the painting, walked slowly backwards and felt a doorway with her hand. The lights were still flickering. The angel had moved further closer towards her. Clara quickly glanced at the room, but then turned her head to see the angel had climbed out of the painting. Clara, still looking at the angel, walked into the room and closed the door.

The Doctor finally opened a door in the wall of the closet, which revealed several control buttons and switches on a wall panel. As he looked at the controls, he felt something touch his shoulder.

A man's voice said, "Don't move or I will kill you."

The Doctor very slowly raised his hands in the air and said, "Who are you and what do you want?"

Clara let out a sigh of relief as she locked the door behind her. She turned and then abruptly stopped, the room she had walked into was full of angels, all covering their eyes.

In the closet where the Doctor was, the man said, "Step away from the panel."

"I have to find my friend."

"Step away from the panel or I will shoot you."

In the room, Clara had her eyes fixed on all the angels.

"Doctor, I hope you are working on shifting the dimensions right now," Clara quietly said to herself.

In the closet, the man standing behind the Doctor was more angry this time.

"If you do not step away, I will shoot you!"

"Then you should shoot me because I need to find my friend," the Doctor answered.

Clara's eyes remained fixed on the angels. She struggled to avoid blinking.

"This is your final warning," the man said. "Step away from the panel!"

As the man said this, the Doctor quickly looked at all the controls on the wall and pulled a lever.

Before Clara's eyes, the angels disappeared and the room's appearance changed to that of the kitchen in the house.

The Doctor turned around to see a man at about the his height, holding a rifle that was pointed at the Doctor. He had a brown beard and brown, tangled hair.

"You should have shot me," the Doctor told him.

"Get away from there," the man angrily responded. "Who are you?" he asked.

"I'm the Doctor."

"Doctor who?"

"Just the Doctor. Would you mind lowering that rifle?"

The man kept the gun pointed at the Doctor.

"What did that lever do?" the man asked.

"It's a dimensional shifter," the Doctor responded. "It brought my friend to this dimension. What's your name?"

"Landon...Landon Trebatius."

"Nice to meet you, Landon. Will you please lower the rifle?"

"No. Not until you tell me who you are," Landon answered.

"As I said, I'm the Doctor. What exactly is this place?"

"It's a virtual world. This place looks real but it's not. You open a door and walk into an entirely new place. Same with elevators. Since I've been trapped in here, I've been running from these statues that make people disappear."

"And how long have you been here?" the Doctor asked.

"I've been here for six months."

"These 'statues' you are referring to are not simply statues. They're called weeping angels and they are extremely dangerous. Now if you will put the rifle down, I might be able to help you," the Doctor said.

"But how would you know the way out?"

"I don't, but perhaps there's a way out of here. Please lower the rifle."

Finally, Landon lowered his gun, exasperated.

"These 'weeping angels'...why do they make people disappear?" Landon asked.

As he spoke, the Doctor walked back toward the closet and closed the door for the control panel and the closet door.

"They send people back in time, so that they die in the past, then the angels can feed on the potential energy."

The sound of a boy's voice could be heard from downstairs, saying, "Mummy...?"

"Did you hear that?" the Doctor asked.

"I think it came from downstairs," Landon answered.

"Clara!" the Doctor exclaimed then ran out of the room.

Back In the kitchen Clara looked around, startled by her new surroundings.

"A kitchen? How did I get here, and where have all the angels gone?"

She walked over to the door and slowly opened it to see if the angel outside had gone to. She didn't see anything and slowly ventured out into the hallway, only it wasn't a hallway anymore, it was a parlor. In the middle of the parlor stood a little boy wearing a gas mask.

"Hello," Clara told the boy.

"Are you my mummy?" the boy asked her.

"No, I don't know where your mummy is."

"Are you my mummy?" the boy repeated.

"Um...have you seen an old man anywhere?"

"Mummy, are you my mummy?"

"No I'm not, but I'll tell you what, if you help me find my friend, I'll help you find your mummy." Clara walked forward and held her hand out to the little boy. The boy slowly raised his scarred hand towards Clara's. Suddenly the doors crashed open and the Doctor rushed into the room!

"Don't touch him Clara!" The Doctor yelled.

Clara stepped backwards in surprise. The boy approached her a few steps.

"Mummy?" he said.

"But it's just a little boy," Clara said.

"He's not exactly a little boy," the Doctor answered.

Landon ran downstairs, carrying the rifle.

"Mummy?" the boy repeated.

"A boy with a gas mask?" Landon wondered.

"Are you my mummy?"

The boy slowly walked toward them.

The Doctor ran to the elevator. It would not open. He used his screwdriver to force it open.

"Are you my mummy?"

"Get in!" the Doctor exclaimed.

All three of them entered the elevator and the Doctor pushed the button for level 11.

"Doctor, how was that little boy with the gas mask dangerous?" Clara asked.

"It's not exactly a little boy with a gas mask. This virtual world must have recreated an event from my past," the Doctor answered.

"We're in a virtual world?" Clara wondered.

"That's according to what my friend here says," the Doctor responded.

"Who are you.... and why are you carrying a rifle?" Clara asked Landon.

"My name's Landon Trebatius. The rifle is for protection."

"Were you trying to kill the Doctor with it?"

"well, I wasn't necessarily TRYING to kill him as much as just THREATENING to kill him."

Just as Clara was about to speak, the Doctor said, "I'm looking for something," the Doctor began, speaking to Landon. "I'm not sure if it's here or not. I'm looking for medium-sized cube-shaped object. Have you seen anything like that?"

Landon looked at the Doctor for a moment.

"I think I have seen something like what you're describing," he answered.

"Where?" the Doctor asked.

"I don't remember."

The Doctor sighed.

The elevator stopped and the door opened.

"Alright then, the next step is to find the angels," the Doctor said. Suddenly a robotic voice was projected over the loudspeaker on that floor.

"Upgrade in progress!" The Doctor and Clara looked at each other, Landon walked out of the elevator

"Well what are you waiting for, let's go find the angels," said Landon

"I wouldn't go out there if I were you," the Doctor cautioned.

"Why not, the angels could be out there."

"I think you're gonna want to listen to the Doctor, the cybermen are not fun to be around" said Clara.

"I'll take my chances." With that Landon turned to walk away, but as he did a big metal man walked into view.

"Halt, you will be deleted!" The robot said as he headed towards them.

"Landon get back in the elevator now!" The Doctor shouted.

"Yeah, alright." Landon ran back into the elevator pursued by the cybermen, Clara closed the door as fast as she could and the elevator continued to the next floor.

"So what exactly are you looking for?" Landon asked the Doctor.

"Something important. Something the Weeping Angels want," the Doctor answered.

"You said it's shaped like a cube? You looking for a cube with power in it?" Landon asked.

"Maybe I am or maybe I'm not," the Doctor answered.

"But where would it be? Could the Angels have already found it?" Clara asked.

"The elevator is going the direction where it is," the Doctor said. "We just have to find the right floor."

"Every floor is completely different and unpredictable. How do you know which one it is?" Landon asked.

"That's why I have a sonic screwdriver. But I am never going to be one hundred percent sure we're on the right floor at the right place."

The elevator door opened again.
